I recently got a great deal on a set of Mizuno MP-60's. They came with Aldila NV shafts (which are nice, but not sure I like graphite shafts) and with a +2 Lie. I have read that if the Lie is to high the result will be shots to the left. My question is will the +2 lie eat up a fade a little or cause me to draw the ball when hitting flush? I have hit them well on 2 outings and not well at all on 2 outings. I am really up in the air about keeping them.

You don't want to mess with this kind of stuff too much. The purpose of a lie adjustment is to make the sole of the golf club level with the ground through impact, not to correct swing flaws.

If the toe drags through the turf, the lie angle is too flat and the ball tends to go right (because the clubface is pointing slightly right). If the heel drags through the turf, the lie angle is too upright and the ball tends to go left (because the clubface is pointing slightly left).

If your ground/sole contact is fine, you do not want to adjust your lie angle. In that case, you should adjust your swing.

In other words, get fitted.

I understand its not there to correct flaws in my swing. I just didn't quite know what would happen with that lie if I hit the ball square all the time.

I am going to see the pro tommorow and work on getting fitted correctly, however I don't think they are too hightech over there. He is a good teaching pro,but I don't know about clubfitter. He has a Ping Cart with about 40 different 6 irons on it. I will see how it goes, but I think if I want a good fitting I am going to have to travel an hour or 3 to get it.

It depends. The lie could be too flat, perfect, or too upright for you. In each of those cases, the ball will respond as I previously said it would: right, straight, left.

The rest is up to your swing. My advice, re-stated, is not to adjust the lie to correct a shot pattern you have but only to adjust the sole/ground contact. Level divots. You can check for yourself whether your club's lie angle is fine. Put some impact tape on the bottom of your 6-iron, hit a ball off a very thin solid board or piece of plastic or something, and see where impact is. Too far towards the toe = too flat. Too far towards the heel = too upright. You want impact in the middle. Of course, that's assuming the clubs are also the proper length.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
