Youve left yourself a huge gap between your PW and your 54*. Almost 10 degrees of difference. If you want to get good at this game its the short clubs that are going to do it for you. Pick up a gap wedge somewhere, preferably a 50*.

A gap wedge is certainly on the to-buy list. Going to play a few rounds with the x-tour wedge and see if I want a x-tour gap wedge or a cavity backed gap wedge. My range experience so far is that I hit the wedges completely straight.

So finally gave in and bought the Callaway X-tour 54*-13 bounce. Works really well, good feel and good distance control. Also found the X-tour 50*-11 bounce for $70 so I picked that up as well. So i've gone 45 (pw) - 50 (Gap) and 54 (sand)

btw...I saw how you were mentioning that your drives are somewhat inconsistent. Perhaps you should try a higher lofted driver...that will give you a better chance of hitting the ball straighter and to hone your swing. Then you can go to a lower lofted driver.

Also...if you like your Callaway XTour...try out the Callaway Forged+. I just bought a 60* one last night at golfsmith for $49.

personally, not only to the gap, add either a 58 or 60, they are miracle workers out of sand, an just about any shot...

Since you're a high handicapper and you have X-20 irons I'd suggest you'd stick with the X-20 wedge. Having as many of the same iron while you're learning definitely can't hurt.

    • Day 105: mirror work today. Focused on not looping my hands at the top of the swing. Straight down.
    • Still working on the backswing a bit. Hand still gets away from the body, out towards the ball, and at A2 the club wants to roll over and get flat at A3. It's just very difficult to shallow from that position like I want. Which makes my downswing work impossible.  Backswing I have been playing around with the left leg straightening to start the backswing. It's like, a slight shove of the hips right with the left leg. Then just keep the flex in the right knee as I turn into it. I kind of like it. I never had a good swing trigger. It helps keep my left knee extended.  Yea, definitely feeling the hand path is traveling down the feet line, and straight up. A little bit of wrist rotation, and a lot more hinge sooner in the right wrist and elbow. I am trying to get the feeling that the arm hinging up then is the cause for the right shoulder to retract to finish the backswing. Club feels much more vertical at A3. I am trying to have my wrist fully hinged by then.  Feel the club and arms stop at A3.5 (my A4). If my arm collapses late, then I turn into that and I am pretty much screwed. The club and arms kind of have a floaty feeling, where they are just suspended in air for a bit, then drop.  Downswing I have been trying to think of a good visual for this mentally. I like the idea of my hands taking a wide arc to my right pocket, or I am taking the back of the hosel and trying to hit the ground behind my right foot.    Left knee stuff, just sooner.
