I always give lots of grief to the networks regarding its telecasts, but from the other side of the coin, I know it's a hard job. I like the first answer below, but follow up on it, tv people, follow up on it. Keep it up NBC w/fewer commercials. And figure out a better way to track the ball.

They want to see the competition. They want to see the players playing, and they don’t want anything to get in the way of that. They also want to see where the golf ball is going, from the air — like the blimp. They would like to see the contour of the golf course, which TV is yet to catch up with that. But we’re working on that; that will come one day. The main thing I always hear about our coverage of golf is we show the competition, and that’s what people want to see.

...

What does it take to produce a golf tournament?

That’s a great question; I’ve never been asked that question before. I’ve always said golf is the hardest sport to do on television, because there’s more than one ball, nobody has numbers on their back and nobody ever stops playing. That’s what makes golf so much harder than every other sport to do on television. It might not look fast and kind of a little slow on television, but behind the scenes, there’s a lot of stuff going on.

How does producing golf differ from producing other sports?

Other sports, like football and basketball, when you go to commercial, they usually stop playing until you come back. In golf, you have to figure out when to go to commercial, what players play quickly, what players play slowly, how far it is from green to tee box … so, all of that comes into play. If you ever get behind on covering golf and you make the wrong moves, it’s like digging a hole with a front-end loader and filling it back in with a teaspoon: You can never catch up.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

I agree. Simply the size of the field and the distance shots cover. That's why they show so much putting: they're in position and can mount cameras near the greens.

    • It’s winter here and time hitting at my indoor place.  This year I bought and sold a few sets so I didn’t settle in on anything. For this coming season, starting now I have a choice to make.  What set would you guys use? 1.  Nike Vapor Pro irons - They are like new, hit them some last year before I had to demo other sets.  I love them, original grips, barely used so I’m almost not wanting to use them to keep their value up.  Standard LLL and standard grips. 2. Taylormade P7TW irons - Still in the box.  Got them over a year ago but had too much to hit, never used them.  Have used a set in the past and loved them.  Ended up with my own set custom fit to me -1/4”, 1 degree flat midsize grips.  These are probably not as valuable because they are still available and they are fit to me. I hate to put the Nikes away but it makes more sense to save them than the TW’s…. I dunno….
    • Day 215 (3 Dec 24) - Another very chilly day - opted to work on easy pitches in the backyard. Worked thru the irons and wedges - focused on foot position and tempo.
    • Yes. I believe in using the same ball all of the time, including chipping and putting practice. I use the orange Callaway Supersoft.  Only $25 per dozen, and sometimes on sale for $20.
    • A 5400 yd course is not that short for gents driving it 160 yards considering the approach shot lengths they are going to be faced with on Par 4s.  Also, for the course you are referring to I estimate the Par 4s have to average longer than 260 yds, because the Par 5s are 800 yds or so, and if there are four Par 3s averaging 130 the total is 1320 yds.  This leaves 4080 yds remaining for 12 Par 4s.  That is an average of 340 per hole. Anyway, if there are super seniors driving it only 160ish and breaking 80 consistently, they must be elite/exceptional in other aspects of their games.  I play a lot of golf with 65-75 yr old seniors on a 5400 yd course.  They all drive it 180-200 or so, but many are slicers and poor iron players.  None can break 80. I am 66 and drive it 200 yds.  My average score is 76.  On that course my average approach shot on Par 4s is 125 yds.  The ten Par 4s average 313 yds.  By that comparison the 160 yd driver of the ball would have 165 left when attempting GIR on those holes.
