Years ago I took lessons from a PGA professional (who no longer teaches) that to create more power you had to roll your wrists through the ball. He gave me some pre shot practices of just rolling my wrists over.

It has helped me go from being a beginner to a decent hacker.

recently (last 3 years) I have been taking lessons from a different PGA pro. The pro doesnt like that I dont interlock my grip or overlap, but with 20 years of baseball there is no way I would be comfortable with any other grip.

my golf grip tends to be strong,  2 1/2 knuckle showing in the V from both my left hand and right-hander pointing towards my right shoulder.

I no longer slice the ball Good news is after years I no longer slice the ball.

The problem now is that when I come through the ball to quickly my hands are subconsciously rolling over quickly and I'm ending up with a closed face at impact.

This is giving me various outcomes from Snap hook to drilling the ball straight into the ground or to hitting monster draws.
Would  a neutral grip start me back on the right path?


The other issue is when I am tired or not warmed up my tempo is off. When the tempo is off I try to swing hard and the result is the closed face at impact.

The problem is at the range I am killing it. I am hitting everything straight. On the course, not so much.\

My swing is off, my tempo, my timing, my hands

Can anyone point me to some exercises for me to help not roll my wrists over & keep the clubs square at impact and through the ball.

How about temp? how do I get that happy, calm place in a zen like mindset?

You can make short backswings and hit and pose the finish, and check (and adjust) how much the hands have rolled over.

Rolling your hands over is something I generally advise nobody "try" to do. It "happens" on its own properly in most players when the sequencing and downswing is done properly.

Rolling your hands over is something I generally advise nobody "try" to do. It "happens" on its own properly in most players when the sequencing and downswing is done properly.

When I go into autopilot mode everything seems to work out.

However when I "try" to hit the ball, just a little better, just a little further and think about it my subconscious, equates "farther & Harder" with "faster and flick the wrists".

I used to be a decent drummer, when I did not think about what I was doing. When I thought about what I was doing it was all over.

The same goes for Golf.

I will try shorter back swing. I have also been working on keeping a stiff left arm, which seems to keep my hands in check.

It is difficult to "not think" about my swing when i have a laundry list of check points to go through as I swing.

But I am working on it

My swing thought at the top of my backswing is pause. I concentration at a particular mark on the back inside quarter of my ball. The concentration naturally slows down your transition. When I do that, I can thread a needle with my woods.

Last night I slowed down my back swing, but powered through the ball.

I was hitting my driver well with only a slight draw. My 3 drives were 265, 255, 297. There was a lot of roll on the last one. But more importantly no snap hooks.

My long irons still fade

my wedges are pulled slightly left.

But atleast my draw, fade & pull are only about 5 to 10 yards.

This is something I can work on evening out or worst case scenario playing with.

If you are going from just fine on the range to falling apart on the course might of had/have the same issues I've had recently. I myself am looking for that cleansing thought pre address routine. but I wonder if you are over thinking/analyzing each shot so your brain is over active trying to make constant little adjustments. there are a few different approaches to take and sometimes the right one depends on the individual and/or whats making them flood with to much information.

back in 2010 I think it was for the Open over seas one of the coaches that coaches two of the pros. they were asked "do you try to give them anything to keep in mind when out there?" his reply was "no, just like a race horse, you teach them everything you can before hand but when its time you just let them run".

which makes perfect sense. once its taught like many other things specially physical it will be more natural and free of thought.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
