I've been Playing Golf for: almost a year now. My current handicap index or average score is:19.9 My typical ball flight is:fade The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is:slice https://www.gamegolf.com/player/EMiller Check out my stats above. I'll point out that im more accurate from the rough outside of 100 yards than the fairway. I've been playing a year but I took about a 5 month break for basketball season and then I was too busy to even get a round in this spring. So let me know what y'all think and follow me on Game golf! There doesn't to be enough data for your Game Golf stats to be relevant just yet. Though a lot of players who struggle with fat/thin shots find it easier to hit out of short rough. You should read this http://thesandtrap.com/t/54050/importance-of-camera-position-in-golf-swing-video-analysis and definitely include a face on view of your swing next time you film yourself.

Looking at your current video it appears you are very active with the hands at the bottom of your swing and your head dips down and pops up abruptly in the follow through. This video could help you out.

Thanks for the reply! I hadn't noticed the head popping up in the video but I've found that's my struggle especially if it's a pitch or short shot. On the less active hands, I had been working on it during that video but I hadn't looked deep into it. Earlier today I read an article on rotary swing about the take away and I've been working on it with some slow swings. A question I had though after developing a different takeaway method is whether my left arm should ever come past the middle of my chest? Also if anyone has any recommendations to fix my strange finish I'm all ears!

Welcome to the site. Yes, try to post a face on if you can. I'd like to see the arm swing shorten up, build some better structure, so you can fire the arms down at the ball faster on the downswing. Right now everything just collapses into and around your chest.

Here's an update from tonight. I only got a 7 iron filmed before the storms came in. Anyone have recommendations on filming besides having my girlfriend hold my phone?

After reading the steady head drill and taking the recommendation to look at another players backswing I found this similarity

Here's Rory from face on. Like I said earlier, the arm swing is too long, they collapse into your chest.

Two threads that you should look at. Cleaning up your grip will give you more "structure" at the top of the backswing. Turning the feet out will help keep the hips centered.

Okay those were two huge break throughs. The first in my grip i had been using the short thumb and really losing control at the top a good portion of the time. So using the long thumb I no longer feel like I'm losing the club. Second, I was a big believer in Hogan's five lessons. However, after reading what you said I decided to look at hogan's actual swing And he's feet are in the duck walking position rather than his back foot perpendicular being and front foot turned out.

You're a smart dude @EMiller

Before anyone "calls you out" on the Hogan foot flare. He did have it more square with the mid-short irons but he didn't have a problem keeping his hips centered. If anything he had a little reverse hip slide (hips moving towards the target on the backswing).

Thanks man! So to up date I went to a titlest demo today. Actually got some fitting for the first time ever. The old guy seemed to know what he was doing and told me i was casting on my downswing. So it brought to my mind that I hit it inconsistantly when I try to control my hands. Anyone have any reccomendations on drills to help this? As far as the fitting went the lie showed that I was better off at +2 degrees lie and an x-stiff instead of a regular.

Hope I'm not overloading you will too many threads ;-)

We like to say "lag happens", it's typically a result of good sequencing (reason I've recommended shortening your arm swing) and a good pivot (steady head on the backswing and weight forward at impact).

No keep it up man! I've been snooping around this site for awhile. You're just cutting down my snooping time and increasing my reading. So thanks!

So I've been reading over 5Sk and I have one major question. Which key do I start on or do I try to learn them all at once? I know I have #3 down because i take a divot in front of the ball thanks to the impact zone. That would also line me up perfect with my 20 handicap.

You want to focus on whichever Key you are most deficient. #1 in your case.

Sorry should've been -2 degrees because I was hitting on the heal thus producing a fade.

The Key that's the priority, for you it's Key #1 (stuff I said earlier) and some #3 and 4 via the grip.

Key #3 still needs work, you're inline before impact. You can still take a divot without achieving #3.

To add to what @mvmac said, they're not in order. You define your own order by what you need to prioritize at the time.

5SK is not a single swing or a "method" swing (in golf the word "method" gets bastardized to mean "one way only"). Everyone will have a different swing in the end, but so long as you're working toward one of the Keys, your swing is improving.

Also, as a shortcut, Keys 1-3 tend to deal with contact, and Keys 4-5 deal with ball flight. If your bigger issue is with contact, look at 1, 2, or 3.

Well in working on #4 and #5 my contact became poor. Anyways any update. Sorry about the poor video on the 7 iron behind and no driver behind. I was still trying to fogire out my angles with my phone clipped to an alignment rod. I was hitting a lot of pushs now and I think I'm trying to swing too hard. Let me know what you all think.

    • Day 91 (1  Aug 25) - Pre-tournament practice round today…had some great up and downs for par saves.  Rain came in this evening so it will be a totally different playing course tomorrow.
    • Jesus, when he keeps saying scissoring moment, ugh that is a horrible sounding phrase. Just makes me cringe. It doesn't help my mind went to Mr. Garrison from South Park. 🤣 If you know you know.  I think for the most part, golf shaft companies have gotten this figured out. They ask questions like, what tempo do you swing at. The whole scissor terminology sounds like they want to stand out a bit.  Yea, golfers load the golf shaft differently, and different bend profiles can help out. I do think swing speed matters as well. You probably want a golf shaft with lower torque if you swing faster.
    • Played 9 holes, shot a 39.  Kind of got around. Everything between the trees, so in play. Short game was rusty. Got to get back on that. Greens were stupidly slow because they got a lot of rain yesterday and probably couldn't cut them down. Usually in the summer they are firm and pretty fast for how sloped they are. Got to work on face to path a bit.
    • We agree here. Top of the car has a forward force, bottom of the car experiences a backward force via the braking. Both about the COM (somewhere in between). Result is a rotational flip. Since the forward force is still higher the car probably still globally travels forward. Sure, pretty basic. You really think there are deliberate twist forces applied? Like forcing the club head forward and simultaneously forcing grip end in the opposite direction? Heck I don't think we even slow down the grip end deliberately let alone force it the other way. Sorry, if I am missing something here. The orientation change is simple incidental because there is different rate of global movement of grip vs. clubhead throughout the swing. I also happen to think the best swings have the least amount of differential movement between the two end in the impact zone.  In my defense, I never thought one could do justice in covering all aspects of a golf swing in a paragraphs or two to begin with. Especially not with grade school physics..😜 Okay.
    • Wow, @DeadMan that is such a helpful breakdown of what’s around. Really excited to check a bunch of these out. Thank you. Will definitely go to Walnut Creek. Will also try and get a commonground tee time. Haven’t played many Doak courses yet! If your schedule frees up, let me know!
