That time when you golfed with your dad...

A little background. I've been hacking at the ball for 25+ years. Now 33, I started playing golf when I was about 7 but never took any real lessons until this summer. I really committed myself and have seen my score drop from 110ish in June to my first 88 a couple of weeks ago. My dad has always been a very good golfer so we've enjoyed the outings this summer and golf discussions.

So here's the story. He was cleaning out an old office desk and found a scorecard when we played together. I must have been about 7 years old was probably one of the first times I've ever played. I got a kick out of it because not only could I not spell but I couldn't count right either. I spelled "Daddy", D-a-d-y. I had my dad shooting a 39 and myself a 65. I recounted the scores last night and he actually had a 38 and I had a 76. I hope I wasn't trying to cheat on him. Anyway, my dad and I got a good chuckle out of it.

My Dad, whom I very proud of, has been playing golf for about twenty years and has never been a great golfer. He refuses to take lessons and is the type that thinks the harder he hits it, the better the shot will be.

Well anyway, he had a medical stroke about six years ago, but his love for golf didn't keep him away. That's about when he introduced me to the game and then I got hooked too.

He now belongs to a nice country club with my Mom, and they play about 4-5 times a week. I join in about twice a month when I can. And he is actually playing better than ever and really enjoying his golden years.

Been playing with my father ever since I was 6. Putt-putted before that, in fact. Even today I still play the majority of my golf either myself or with him. I realize he would shoot about 35 (par 3 course) and I'd be in the forties. Didn't start really taking the game seriously until this year, though (Before then I just hacked it up).

Here's the deal, though: I sank my longest putt ever - about 45 feet - when I was 7. I haven't made one even close to that since. And today I have the potential to shoot higher scores than when I was 7 - because when I was 7, I couldn't hit a ball far enough to lose it.

Well, finally I beat him one day and he handed me a little trophy that he had been saving for that day. He knew the day would come, but he never took it easy on me. He made me earn it. That little trophy meant a lot to me because of all the hard work I had put into my game.

I learned a lot about golf from him, and most of it was without him speaking a word.

That's awesome. My dad is 66 so his age starting to cath up with him distance wise and for the first time I consistantly hit further than him. He still spanks me on chipping and especially putting. I'm starting to close the gap though so maybe next year.

My dad was quite the golfer, when he grew up all he had was lefty clubs (very odd but knowing where he grew up and how he grew up its really not odd at all) and so thats what he played with and he became a scratch golfer lefty.

When he moved to Ohio and had to leave the clubs behind, they were kind of like the community set or a rental set, he had to get righty and became a scratch golfer right handed.

I never got to play with him while he was young, he was 50 when I was born so I was probably 14 or so when I started and he was then 64, he still hit a good ball but age caught up with him. I still have one of his old wood shafted putters, the softest feel ever, I will go and putt with it sometimes. Ill try to get a picture up of it. Lots of memories of playing though.

I am lucky enough to be able to still play with my Dad every weekend. In fact we partner in several tournaments every year. Even at 67 he is still a 2 handicap. We battle every time we play because if you win you get bragging rights for the week to come.

I'v ebeen playing with my dad since I was 7 or so. No matter how good I played he would always get my by a stroke or 2. ALWAYS could get inside my head and make me collapse. Finally in my late 20's I got him by a stroke. for the last decade we've gone back and forth, but the last time we played (over the 4th of July) I beat him handily because I had really stepped up my game and he's definately slipped.

my dad is the only reason I got started in golf. Love and hate him for that hehe just kidding. He has been playing since I was born 28 now. When I was 12 he got me a starter set and I played here and there nothing much but recently I love it even more cause as you get older you enjoy the time with your father more. SO There is nothing better for me then taking a day off getting my dad and hitting the best sport ever... Oh we both love the 19th hole too!!!! lol

Good stuff, guys. My dad passed away when I was 14, and was sick for quite a few years before that. But I have great memories of heading out with him when I was 5 or 6 - he played in a weeknight league. He, and his playing partner, always let me tee off, always let me hit an extra ball after their 2nd shots and always let me putt out a ball before moving along.

I have 16 month old twin girls and I look forward to the day we can all get out. It's such a great game and I have such great memories that I really can't wait to spend afternoons knocking it around with my kids.
