I'm new to golf and need some advice.

I'm 22 years old and my height is 5'10''.

I know people say don't go off right away and buy a set of clubs, but my brother won't let me borrow his forever.

I've been doing some research and I have become overwhelmed with the amount of different types of clubs.

I think I would be best suited for a used set of "game improvement" clubs.

My brother uses a set of old ping eye 2 irons that I have been using which I don't think are "game improvement" style. He also has a taylormade burner superfast driver that I have been able to hit the ball pretty straight and solid with.

I like the Taylormade brand and I'm interested in buying a used set of the Burner 2.0 irons and a used burner 2.0 driver probably 10.5*

There are so many different styles out there and I'm not sure exactly which one I need.

Like graphite or steel shaft? I probably need regular flex I guess. I saw some number that I think is swing speed. I don't know what my swing speed is... and then length is also a question.(I'll go measure my brother's clubs)

Any and all advice is appreciated.

I'm not much of an equipment nut or anything, so hopefully some others will chime in here as well, but I think you are definitely on the right track.  Staying away from a new but junky Wal Mart set of clubs, and also resisting the temptation to buy fancy new name brand clubs as well.

Burner 2.0 seems like a solid beginner iron and it appears you can get some sets on ebay for $200 or so.  Perhaps even cheaper elsewhere.  I'd stick with steel shafts on the irons too.  For the driver, graphite is the way to go for everybody nowadays, and without knowing anything at all about you except that you are 22, I'd probably say go for a stiff shaft.  (If it turns out you needed a regular shaft in the end, all it cost you in the meantime is a little distance while providing you extra control)

I figure the less you can get away with spending now, the more you can allow yourself in a few years, once you've become addicted and want to go get professionally fitted and stuff.

being 5'10 your most likely right off the shelf set up when it comes to length. But the only way to tell is by getting a fitting. Fittings are cheap or most of the time free when at a PGA, Golf Galaxy franchise store. Of course that's if your buying a set from the fitting. I suggest you go to the store get your swing speed and lengths set up correctly so your confident in your bag. A year or two down the road you will be thankful. remember as you keep learning the game and improving your swing your speed will change to some extent.

Thanks. I guess I need to go the academy sports and see what size I need.  I plan on building a golf net similar to the one in this video to practice in my backyard.

Alright well I'll search for a good used set. I think I'm gonna get the Taylormade RBZ driver. I found one in good condition with head cover for $70 shipped.

The Burner 2.0 irons were popular when first marketed, and then got a second life as a lower cost "legacy" model. Legacy models are basic versions of earlier-year clubs which are reissued to attract entry-level golfers.

If you buy used Burners, be sure to test them in the golf shop to make sure you can hit them OK. Some shops will let you try out used irons for a month or so to see if they really work for you.

If there is an Edwin Watts near you, check it out. They have a 90 day guarantee, on new and used gear. So you could pick up a decent used set (which they can help you pick something appropriate, for free) and you can go play them for a month or so, and return them for 100% store credit toward another set if you're not happy with them. One further piece of advice I would provide is to know your prices when you hit the shop (have the PGA value guide pulled up on your phone) so you don't get gouged on the price.
