trying to get started

hey guys,

i just recently have started to get back in to the game after a bit of a hiatus. i've been using hand me down clubs for a while but am now starting to look for a set of my own. does anyone have any suggestions as to a set that would be best?

Best advice I can give is buy what you can afford. Just because something costs more does not make it better. You might want to look at the Tour Edge stuff. They have affordable clubs, and are good as anything else available on the market today. Some of their equipment even resembles Callaway equipment. I stick with them because the their service after the sale, which has always been 100% for me when I needed something tweaked, or repaired.

I once broke a club shutting my car door on it. I told them what happened, and they laughed, sent me a new club for free, and even paid the UPS charges.

You might try to find some used clubs that fit you. Golf shops get lots of clubs and sets on trade-in, and want to move them back out the door so they can recoup their money.

Ask your friends for advice on a good golf shop. If you're "out of the loop" with other golfers, ask a local high school or college coach for advice. Then, go to the shop and tell them your situation.

If you got 5i-PW, a SW, and Driver, 4W , 4H and putter, this would get you started for first season.

Do this in person, as you want to be able to hit the clubs and find which ones you like. You can also get a basic static fitting: the fitter checks the shaft length and flex, grip thickness, and lie angle. For lie angle, the fitter likely will put sole tape on some of the clubs, and have you hit balls off a lie board with each club. The board leaves a scuff; if it's off-center, the lie angle might need to be adjusted.,

As a beginner myself, I hear this touted over and over again.  Yet I've gone to three different 'big box' golf stores and haven't received any of the treatment above.  Maybe I need to specifically ask for it.  But in all cases, I'm telling them what I want to hit instead of them using their "experience" and "knowledge" to help me.

And WUTiger, I'm certainly not discounting what you said as I'm sure there are good experiences to be had at local golf stores.  I just haven't found one myself.

Check out some quality used sets, or maybe the Adams Blue irons, or one of the Adams complete sets. IMO, Adams makes some really good beginner sets

Another vote for Adams especially if you use eBay. I just picked up a brand new set of xtd irons for $153 and tried them the other day and they worked great for me. Last year I got a driver and 2 fairway woods for just under $200 also new. They were as long and forgiving as most anything else in my price range but then I saw what I could get them for on eBay I went with the Adams clubs.

I just bought an XTD driver for 60 and a 4H for 30 on eBay brand new. Both from same seller and he discounted shipping. Pretty good if you ask me!

If you're a beginner and are really serious about playing and continuing to play in the future, then do yourself a big favor and buy a nice new set of game improvement irons. It might cost more at first but you'll be more excited to use them (compared to a lesser set) and they'll help your scores more than you realize. I bought a new set of Mizuno JPX-EZ (4-GW) on EBay for $450. If you're not a senior then I'd recommend stiff irons but if you're a senior then look into graphite. Just make sure you know length to get
