Hi all,

I'm new to golf and have been using a friends' clubs for the last month or so. I've decided to buy my own set as I'd like to fully commit to the sport. After doing extensive research I've narrowed my choices to the following:

Callaway Strata 12 Pc.

Wilson Profile XLS Complete Set

Both end up being the same price to me as I'd have to special order the Callaway's due to being outside the USA; whereas the Wilson's I can get locally.

While buying used is an option, I like the piece of mind that comes with knowing I have the latest tech out there (ie. the Hybrid Club the comes with either set).

Any advice would be great.

Thanks.

PS. I'm a recreational player - I play as often as I can (usually 3-4 times/week).

You'll get a variety of responses here. For me, I'm not one to go for "kits" such as the Callaway Strata. I'd rather have a used set of quality irons than a shiny new "ok" set. Of course, most importantly is how the clubs feel to you. Many here will encourage you to get properly fitted before you buy. I would at least hit the style of club you're looking at before you buy. Used clubs may not have that shiny new exciting look...but when it comes to clubs....used will often be just fine as long there aren't obvious faults....bent shaft, horribly scratched faces...etc.

You can probably find a used set of Pings, e.g., G15s, for the same price you would pay for the clubs you're looking at. Pings are easy to hit, high launch etc. I would stay away for the "sets."

@Sante TwoGloves

Yes, I start with 30 mins or so of chip/pitch practice. Range for about 1.5hrs. Then 3-4 holes on the weekend. I haven't worked my way up to 9 holes yet as I'm still working on aiming/placement. Then it's on to 18 of course.

My apologies, I should have clarified that I'm still in the fundamental skills development stage and haven't tackled the entire course as of yet. However, I have invested in getting lessons .

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
