Recently got a new set of Mizuno MP15's, and I love them. The only problem I am having his holding greens. Even with higher lofted irons, 7, 8, and even 9. The ball flight looks nice and high, yet they hit, make a nice divot, and yet roll on 10, 20, or more feet. I was fitted with the Project X 5.5 shaft, and I love the feel of it. Durring the fitting, my spin with the 6 irons was mid to high 4000's. I thought that was a tad low, yet the fitter was pleased, the ball flight looked good, and so I went with it. I have read the PX shafts are rather low spining. Maybe too low for my swing? In the past, I would easily hold green with a 6, even a 5 iron. Any toughts our similar experiences? Thanks!

What was the peak height? Also what is your clubhead speed? Ideally you want to be around 30 yards high for your golf shots.

PGA Tour players average about 6000-6500 rpm with a 6 iron. You are 2000 RPM's less. I am not sure exactly how much spin rate is lost due to clubhead speed difference on iron shots. Mid to high 4000's is like a PGA Tour's 3-4 irons. I would think that is too low for a 6 iron.

What's your clubhead speed? Are the greens firm where you play? What kind of ball do you use?

Here's my numbers from some testing I just did with the Callaway Apex CF 16 irons compared to my PING irons. My spin is good for my speed, I don't have any trouble holding greens . You'll also notice there's a carry distance and a total distance but that doesn't mean the ball is going to roll out 10 yards on the course.

Never heard a mention of peak height. Club speed with a 6 was around 87MPH.

The Project X (115 gram in 5.5) is designed with rifle technology: It gives the ball a bit higher launch, but the shot then flattens out for more penetrating trajectory (marketing catch phrase) as it flies toward target. If you are hitting the shots that are "nice and high" as you say, it seems you are moving through the ball well - unless the shots go "nice and high" because you're scooping them to help get them up. What distance do you get from your 6-iron?

What ball you play could also be a factor. If you have a distance ball, it may not stop all that well below the short irons. Also, distance balls tend to spin less. Hard greens speak for themselves.

Now if the ball hits and releases forward 5-10 feet consistently, it's not the end of the world. This is one way to defeat false fronts, upslopes at front edge of green which spins ball backward into the fairway.

Let us know the answer to the ball question.

I hit project X and Dynamic Gold and both game me a peak height of 30 yards. Dynamic Gold launched about 1-1.5 degrees lower, but with much more spin. It only is perception the ball actually looks to have a higher peak height, because when you look up to see the ball it's higher up earlier in the flight, but it does flatten out. The peak height doesn't change. So to say the club hits the ball higher is not really true if you are talking peak height.

Here's question: Is Project X the shaft that gives the same ball height (about 30 yards) for all properly hit iron shots? One shaft promised this back around 2009, but I can't remember if it was Project X.

No clue. I know trackman has PGA tour players averaging 30 yards for all of their shots and the all don't use project X.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
