I am looking for suggestion on a couple sets of irons I am looking at. Currently I use ping i3 and am looking to upgrade them. I hit them fairly well the issue is they need to have the loft adjusted, regripped, and the shaft are too short for me-due to the po having them fitted. The cost to make the clubs right could get me better used set for the same money. I have about 2 seasons experience and do not want anything that I won't be able to hit after I get them. I can get a good deal on 2 sets of clubs for under $200 - taylormade rocketbladez tour and Titleist ap2 710. What are the thought on these clubs for a newer player like myself? I don't have a true handicap yet a decent round for me is 15 over. Thanks in advance.

I would recommend the AP2. Those are great clubs. I've been playing the 714 AP2 for a year and a half. Check around E-bay. You may find the 712 in that price range.

I have readone positive reviews on those clubs I was concerned with the forgiveness of them. Ebay is where I am checking.

If you go with AP2.712, look around at some of the golf shops. If you find used irons you could test-hit them first to see if they work for you. If you buy from eBay and they don't work, you have to re-sell them (hassle).

eBay may be an option after you've played longer, and have a sense of what the different club models will do.

This will be lengthy. You're asking about 2 different types of clubs. The AP2 are forged and the TM are cast. Read about the differences in cast and forged. What I'd suggest is a good fitting. Off the rack clubs don't fit people most the time. I lowered my score 8 strokes in one season because of a fitting and some time learning to hit the clubs I was fit for. I'm a decent player hitting to a 7 hcp. I've played both types of irons you're looking at. Another reason to get fit is a story that happend to me. I was fit and went through my first set of TM. I bought a set of Mizuno forged irons and played well with them. I was about a 14 or 15 hcp then. In a club playoff I paired up with a 62 year old guy with an old set of Ram Laser irons. Nothing special. I got my butt handed to me by 9 strokes. The reason, he played what he could afford and what made him the best he could be. He was fit for them by the same pro I was just years earlier. I was outside my ability with my clubs but they were so cool to look at. I should have stayed with the TM irons they were a lot like the tours you're looking at. Be smart buy what you can afford. Buy what you like. Get fit. Have them adjusted. Then practice and learn the intricate parts of the irons you choose. Don't buy to buy. It is a waste of money. Even if it's a good deal it won't make you better. It's like basketball shoes. Would you buy a size 12 pair of Jordan's when you wear a 10? Even if it's a good deal it won't help your shot or dribbling. You'll be worse than when you started. My advice is get a static fitting at a box retailer from their pro. They will take the time to fit you even if you don't buy. If they aren't busy they'll be happy to help. You can also get a good idea of what you're looking for with the ping fitting site if you have a tape measure. That'll get you started and at least get you in the ballpark. Then get a well taken care of used set that's at your specs. It won't be as hard to adjust to your exact specs later maybe 1/2 to 1 degree. If you're patient you'll probably find some with your grip size and shaft length too. If the seller is reputable and they look good pick them up and take the time to learn them. Hope the old guy stories help. I've been where you're at. I made some good and bad choices in equipment. If I can help keep someone from going down the rabbit hole like me I will. Good luck and great hitting.

Thanks DJ the input is certainly helpful. I like my irons and play them fairly well. The thought behind upgrading is I needs to get them regripped, sent out for loft adjustments ( cannot be done localy due to hardness), and the shaft are too short for me. All in all this will cost me as much as another quality used set that mayear and upgrade not needongoing shafta or grips. Also if I need another lie adjustment angle due to being a newer player still developing it could be done locally.
