In Pelz's short game bible, he suggested to have 4 wedges, drop 2 irons, and have a distance gap of 15y between each club.

I was just wondering if there's anyone that's done this. And how is it working out? If you carry 4 wedges, what clubs did you drop?

Yes, I did, but with some variations :

- First, take into account that in the book, Pelz refers the PW as a wedge with 50 degrees loft or so. Today a PW has 44-48 degrees
- Today, all the club lofts are stronger, so a 4 iron has the degrees of a real 3 iron

So, I addopted the Pelz 3x4 system, but I did the following :

- I carry a PW (45º), GW (51º), SW (56º) and LW (60º). I don´t carry a XW (64º)
- With them, I´ve the "finesse swing" table with 12 distances
- For the spare club, I ditched the 3 iron (think in fact it´s a real 2 iron) or sometimes, it depends on the course, I carry only a fairway wood instead of two. I´m waiting for a 4 wood I´ve tried, and I think I will carry the 4 wood instead of 3 and 5

Other thing you can do is to tweak the lofts of some of your irons to have one club less but well spaced in lofts. Jim Furyk made this, and he doesn´t carry a 4 iron, he has a 5 and a "false" 3. As Pelz says, you´re not so precise with long irons, so...

Hope this helps

I recomend that you have your good old self club fitted by any Major golf club manufacturer who has the right equipment . From there you can have your clubs made to groove onto what type of game you play . Kinda expensive but well worth it in terms of satisfaction and lowering your handicap . Of course all of these would be for nothing if you dont spend time working your clubs out . 3 times a week on the range 200 balls min . A day at a Par 3 course and another at a standard .

Thanks Waku. So you didn't tweak any lofts of your irons?

I was just thinking since I'm going to order new irons, if I'm going to drop a club or 2, I might as well not ordering them to save some money for a hybrid.

I do go to the range 2, 3 times a week. But the weather here doesn't allow me to play once a week. My work doesn't let me play more than once a week.

Thanks. It is interesting to read.
