Myrtle Beach used to be my favorite golf destination - until my first trip to Pinehurst!

I still like MB, and think that it is extremely friendly to a solo golfer. There have been 2-3 times that I just needed a break from work and lousy Ohio weather, and booked a flight, hotel and rental car, and headed to Myrtle. We also had a group that went to MB for a week each April up until about 2000, when the group started going different places each year.

There used to be a last-minute tee time kiosk in the lobby of what was Martin's Golf, and is now PGA Superstore, I think. I'd pop in there every day, and find the best deal on the best course available for the next day. I played a few of the courses that you mention, and liked Tidewater and Prestwick alot; my favorite courses in MB overall were Heritage, down south, Wizard was a pleasant surprise, and Thistle, way up north had the best greens that I have played in the MB area. I haven't played either Caledonia or True Blue; I'm a big Mike Strantz fan, but both courses were real pricey when I have visited.

I'm going back to MB in early June with a small group, playing the Legends group courses. I liked all 3 of the courses at the Legend's resort, but can't tell Parkland, Heathland and Moorland apart in my mind. We'll also be playing Heritage and Oyster Bay, and I might come in a day or two early to hit a couple other top-end tracks.

I've only been up in your home area once, and got to play Erin Hills a couple years ago. It's a great track, and I don't regret paying the $ to play it. The Kohler courses are still on my bucket list. Hopefully, I'll get to them soon.

Enjoyed your review of your trip. Wish I could hop on a plane and head to MB now, although our weather in Ohio is pretty awesome, for early March.

The more I reflect, Prestwick was probably my favorite. I thought it had some awesome par 3's... fairways were very tight. It was tough but u could definition score on it. Next year I'll definitely be back in the area. I wish I had the means to just pick up leave Wisconsin lol. I wouldn't every spend a weekend here in the winter!

I've played all the Kohler courses, but I really want to play Erin Hills. Came close last year... just never happened.. hopefully this year! I'll go alone if I have to. I'm not a very good golfer, but i love golf. It's a passion, like I'm sure it is for most on this forum. I just want to have the experiences mainly.

This!! once I realized I hadn't been to strip club in years and I could play in 4 hours in the Pinehurst area instead of 5 or 5.5 in MB....still have soft spot for the strand but not in a hurry to return - that being said I really miss playing Caledonia and the Dunes club every year!

So the last day... Brian sent me to Tidewater. I got there 10 mins before my tee time. I was supposed to be going off with this twosome but they teed off right before I got there. The starter told me I'd be playing as a single unless I could catch them. I figured I could easily catch up. I smash my first Drive right down the middle of the fairway. I see the twosome finishing up on the green, and that would be the last time I saw them lol. I played really well for the most part that day too. I shot an 86, which is good for me, at a new course. They must have hit fairways... greens in reg... and 1 and 2 putted every hole. They finished their round in 2 and a half hrs.

Anyways, Tidewater was a gorgeous course. I enjoyed it a lot. Fairly difficult, and just had some cool looking holes. Just can't get those aesthetics at too many places here in Wisconsin.

Golfing in Myrtle was excellent! I just wish I would've played better overall. Other than  that, it was all gravy! Can't wait to go back again!

I loved Tidewater. Great course and I was treated better than I deserve by the staff.
I got to play there in August when the cost was much cheaper since it was 96F out.
Tidewater is also as high end as I get to golf MB.

I would go back when I am there at the end of April, but $174 a round is too steep.

Glad you had fun in MB

My son and I will be traveling to Myrtle Beach in May.  We are looking for wide open moderately priced courses.  Any recommendations?

Tidewater was awesome! It was a beautiful day... I  got to play it alone,  and only played 30 bucks to play it! The staff was awesome.  The guy in the pro shop was giving me a little shit cause he was watching me play the 18th hole and I flew my 2nd shot over the the green...chipped it within a foot... then tapped in with the flag in... 'nice bogey on the 18th' But I was very impressed with the southern hospitality.

I played 4 courses when I was there.  The most forgiving by far was Myrtlewood. They have 2 courses there I think, and the both are pretty wide open. I really couldn't recommend any other course. I would try to get a package deal. That may be the cheapest route. But again,  I'm probably not qualified to give you a rock solid answer as it was my first time visiting Myrtle also.

    • Day 316 - More swings, full backswing and full finish.
    • Day 132: did some mirror work while watching TV. Worked on backswing stuff primarily.
    • 26 Nov 24 -  It was not a record breaking round by any means, but rather a simple walking of the back nine today playing TBWB (two ball-worse ball) where the challenge is to play the worse of the two shots played - could be an errant drive from the woods, a tree knocked ball that is 100 yds farther back down the fairway, a nGIR ball as opposed to a GIR….the goal today was to stay no worse than bogie thru nine.  Managed to achieve that goal - bogied 7 holes with one dbl and one par to counter the dbl.  It’s about staying focused and not letting a bad shot or lie derail, but rather be an opportunity.
    • Day 208 (26 Nov 24)- Opted to walk 9 today (was the back nine as they had a huge group going off the front) but instead of it being persimmons and blades, I had the regular gamers but made it a TBWB (two ball-worst ball) round.  This really challenges on several fronts - ball striking to be as consistent as possible, course management from non-optimal lies and keeping your head in it as it can be depressing to nail a shot on line-on target and the second rattles the trees right and it’s over 50 yards back and that’s the one you have to play.  The goal was to be no worse than bogie overall (+9).  Finished the round exactly on the number with some solid recoveries, no penalty strokes and only one 3-putt.
