Hey, everyone. My friends just got me into playing golf last week and it seems really fun. I want to buy my own set of clubs now but I'm not sure where to start. I'm looking to spend around 150-300$. I was thinking about getting a used set of name brand irons to start with. But I'm not sure which brand/model would be the best for a beginner. Also I was thinking about getting the Jack Nicklaus Men's Golf Set from Costco ( http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product...lang=en-US&s;=1 )

Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks!

My suggestion: make sure your first set fits you. Otherwise, you'll just get frustrated, same as you would if you bought "one size fits all" shoes.

And I notice you're from my home area of Orange County. There's actually a great shop in Irvine / Lake Forest, not too far from Saddleback Community College (SCC has the most beautiful driving range I've ever seen, by the way) where I got my first set of irons for about the cost of that set ($200). Their website is http://www.us-tour.com/ and I have the LX-7W irons. If you make an appointment, they'll fit the clubs to you, and you will be able to pick them up a day or two later. (For the record -- I have no affiliation with the shop or brand. It's just a set of clubs that many of my friends and I play. I will possibly even go back to them for my next set of irons unless I get a killer deal on Cobras) Although the set at Costco may seem like a better deal, realize that you're getting COTS (Commercial Off-the-shelf) clubs that may or may not fit you. With the rest of your budget, you could get a putter, either there or at a more traditional golf shop, and you'd be set for a while. Once you get used to swinging clubs, you can fill out the rest (driver, woods, additional wedges, etc). By the way, there are many great facilities in Orange County for beginner golfers, such as the Newport Beach G.C. course. It's an executive course with pretty decent greens. It isn't too challenging for a beginner but an experienced player can still have fun there. I'm sure your friends have their favorite courses too.

If you are going to be serious about golf i would go get custom fitted with either a powerbuilt set or Callaway's Game enjoyment system. Both sets are great for beginners. ANother set of clubs that i can recomend are Tour Edge Bazooka irons. THese are hybrid irons that are real easy to hit and very inexpensive if you don't feel like spending the miney to get custom fitted.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
