Hi,

I have researched this quite hard but can only find info on the Ping eye2 irons. I have a set of original Ping eyes which I bought second hand a few years ago. I have only recently started playing golf a little more seriously and have quickly moved from a 28 to an 18 handicap. I want to improve, will a change of clubs help or will the Ping eyes see me through to a mid-handicap golfer. People rave about the Ping eye2s and it seems that it is hard to compare distance with modern clubs because of the change of loft. Any advice would be appreciated.

The Ping Eye line started in 1978 and was the predecessor to the legendary Eye 2 line.

There is some info out there on them but it is mostly about the Eye 2’s.

I collect Eye 2’s but have never hit the Eye’s so if you are having fun with them and keep getting better, keep playing them till you do not see any more improvement from them.

They have the old school lofts to them so if you get a newer set, you will see a dramatic change from how far you hit your 7 iron to what you can hit a new 7 iron.  It also opens up a hole from the wedge to the sand wedge… this is where the Approach, Gap or Utility wedge come into play.

The decision is kind of on you…. Do you want a new set?  Do you want to save some cash and buy a used set?  You don’t mention what else you have in the bag.  If you have improved from a 28 to an 18 with them you might just keep using them.  On the down side, they are so small they are like baby blades so you might not like how big and clunky a lot of the new clubs look and feel.

I played my Eye 2’s for the first few years when I started golfing and even though I have newer clubs, I do occasionally take my Eye 2’s out for a round here and there.

I have the BeCu ones and they just have a different look and feel to them that is hard to describe but I like it!

Good luck to you and I hope I was able to help a little bit.

I am also currently playing an old set of the original Ping Eye irons that I inherited - 1-W, except the 7-iron which was lost and replaced with an Eye 2 (all are Black Dots). I sometimes think that I hit the 7-iron better but I don't know if it's because it's an improved club or because I'm always gonna hit my 7-iron better?

I'm just starting to play again after a long layoff so while I'll play for a while longer with the old Eye's then eventually get newer irons...but it may just be a used set of Eye 2's.
