Hi Guys,

I bought my TM rescue duals (see signature) brand new for $100 dollars each here as they were on sale last october. Am using them and am so far satisfied with them, given the occassional slice and hooks. The thing is is am just wondering if the shaft flex is the right one for me. You see the 19* and 22* are mitsubishi diamana stiff shafts and the 25* is a regular steel shaft. Given my handicap and my swing speed around 90mph,(all stock shafts) are these shafts ok?

a friend of mine got me wondering by saying am not maximizing my capability (having to have to "pound" the ball whenever i use these clubs) because I should be using regular R2 or R3 flex shafts.

My driver and fairwaywoods are on regular flex (both are stock shafts) and i have no problems with them either. Would appreciate your help...

Thanks for being patient.

There are plenty of people around here that know more than me, but flex is really personal. I know a guy that shoots in the 60s pretty regularly and he just sent off his i-10s to Ping to get them reshafted with soft regular (senior) flex steel shafts because he wanted something a little softer than the regular flex he was using. It's all a matter of your individual swing. I'm assuming when you say your swing is 90mph that you mean for driver. Unfortunately, swing speed really doesn't say everything because it's all about your individual swing. Some people have more violent transitions at the top and might need a stiffer flex to get the most out of their swing. On top of this, not all flexes are uniform across the brands. One company's "stiff" might be very close to other companies' "regular". The only way to really know is to see a good fitter and they can suggest the right things.

A stiff flex for a 90 swinger should suit you fine. Don't worry or think about it.

I think that you should be using a flex no stiffer than Regular Flex. I played with a professional the other day and his driver had a regular flex shaft so a stiff flex would probably be too much for you.

Supposedly, someone with swing speed of 90 mph should be using regular flex but I don't think it's absolute. My swing speed is 95mph and I'm using stiff flex for accuracy and feel. I used to play with NS Pro 950GH R-flex with my MP-60. There's nothing wrong with them, but after I had tried my friend's MP-67 with TT Tour Concept S3, I knew I wanted heavier and stiffer shaft. The reason being that NS Pro felt (too) whippy at impact and I'm losing the feel everytime during the swing because it's too light. In fact I just got reshafted a few days ago and I haven't had the chance to test them at the range. But I'm sure they're great just like my friend's.

That's for irons, by the way. For the flex in woods, hybrids, and driver I definitely think you should get fitted.

Hi Guys,

You will probably like R flex shafts a bit better (I'm assuming that your 90 mph SS is driver SS). But it also probably won't make a lot of difference either.

Thanks. My Driver shaft is a Mizuno Exsar regular flex 50g, 4.5 torque and am hitting it well. Does it mean that for my 3 wood and hybrids I should get the same specs?

The same shaft (with appropriate tipping by the clubmaker/manufacturer) would be the right place to start (and in all likelihood the right place to end).

Went to see a a club fitter yesterday and after checking out my swing speed etc. he saw that the diamana stiff shaft was definitely not for me. He replaced my rescue's shafts with regular flex and I'm picking them up later for a test in the nearby driving range.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
