Hi everyone,

I'm moving from the tri-state area to West LA at the start of 2008 and was looking for some good (relatively inexpensive) golf courses in the LA area. Public or private, as long as they let a lone 8 handicap onto their greenery.

In my bag:

Driver: Taylor Made R5 Dual-N, Stock stiff, 9.5*
Woods: 3 & 5 wood, Taylor Made Supersteel
Irons: Nike ProCombo, stiff, 3 through pitchingWedges: Wilson Harmonized, 55* SW, 60* LWPutter: Scotty Cameron Newport Studio 2.5Ball: Whatever ends up in my bag

Hi everyone,

Los Angeles or Louisiana? I'm assuming Los Angeles, so disregard my response if you meant Louisiana.

How lone? Most of the public courses in the LA area, other than the resort courses, will pair you up with other folks to make a foursome. That having been said, you can walk them for about $30 on weekends. Get an LA City Card - you can get it for $25 a year once you live here, at any of the LA City courses. This lets you make tee times at a dozen or so courses, including the famous Rancho Park. Maybe we need to add a course listing to this site to keep this info in one place?

check out Moorpark...there is a new course designed by Geoff Shackleford that is outstanding. You can also play some of the muni's in Long Beach (Rec Park, El Dorado) for relatively cheap. They have walk on's as well. Costa Mesa has a couple nice muni's as well at Costa Mesa CC.

If you get a chance, go out and play the SCGA Member's course in Murietta. Great track for the price.

West LA area public clubs are kinda sparse, I'd recommend Rancho Park. A ton of history there, used to host the LA Open. Problem is is that it is the most played course in America. Expect a 5.5 hour round. Very excellent course though. one of my favorites. You may run into a celebrity or two. There are buttloads of private clubs in the area. Unfortunately they are EXTREMELY high end (Pricey). The Riviera CC, Los Angeles CC, Wilshire CC, Brentwood CC, Bel Air CC, Hillcrest CC.

You can drive a few miles north into The Valley (where I'm from) and play Knollwood, or the Woodley/Balboa courses. Private in the valley includes Lakeside, super top-notch, That's where those old Bobby Jones lessons you'll see on golf channel were filmed. I work at Porter Valley CC. Other private: Woodland Hills CC and El Cabarello.

Then there's Ventura county. Just outside of the Valley. Tons of good public or semi-private spots in Ventura.

How expensive is Malibu cc if it isn't as pricey as it sounds? That sounds like it would be very expensive.

Then again, Knollwood CC sounds expensive and it's $28 or so to walk on weekends.

My dad's got a condo in pasadena (which i know isn't quite LA but close enough) and there's a cool course right next to the rose bowl called brookside. i played there a bunch and am looking forward to playing there this winter break. it's quite cheap, especially evening rates. honestly i have no idea what the LA area is like so that could be quite far from you? but just my .02 & me trying to help =]

Pasadena and Brookside are plenty close to L.A.. UCLA plays football near Brookside, I believe. In any case, Brookside is on my to-play list.
Its public, you can roll of there midweek for fifty.

Malibu CC, I assume? Cool. I'll have to give it a try.

I agree! Tons of courses in Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks, Camarillo, etc. With the warm weather, you really can't go wrong in that part of the world. The traffic, however, is another story entirely.

I just moved from LA. Some of the favorites north of town were:

Lost Canyons (Simi Valley)
Malibu CC.
Valencia TPC (great hill course with most blind shots - use your Sky Caddy!)
Robinson Ranch (Santa Clarita)

If you've never played a TPC course, try Valencia - - it's an experience!

Brookside is fun and very reasonable. It has 2 courses and is right next to the Rose Bowl. They actually park cars on the courses when there is a game. If you plan to play on the weekend, get a tee time, or you might be doing some practice waiting to get out on the waiting list.

Cheers,
Pace Kelly

    • Day 314 - Putting some things together. Better grip/setup, fuller backswing, better finishing position. Filmed some swings, happy with the progress.
    • Day 130: did a stack session.
    • Day 206 (24 Nov 24)  - An easy session with the 54deg wedge and hard foam balls / one simple goal - distance control thru backswing length while not decelerating.  Had a playing partner comment they noticed me decelerating on a couple short wedge shots in last round.  Hit from distances from close to 40yds down to 20.
    • Musgrove Mill hole #15 was converted to a par 3 after Hurricane Helene. Today, I had 145 from the tee which is a perfect 9-iron for me. I aimed just right of the hole and pulled it a few feet. Clanked off the stick down into the hole and ricocheted out of the hole 13’ away. Drained the putt for a birdie after repairing the hole which was damaged . Not sure if it would have counted as a HIO, but I was pretty excited!
    • Day 55 - 2024-11-24 Did five levels of Operation 36 on GSPro (different courses). 🙂 Was -4 from 200 yards (32) intentionally laying up on each hole (i.e. not hitting a 5I or something). Shot… 22, 24, 26 from 25, 50, and 100 yards. I forget my 150-yard score, but obviously it was < 36. Putting was odd… (and I did it with the wedge or a 7I or whatever was in my hand).
