Hello Everyone!

Just now joining after lurking for a few months and I now have a question worth asking.

Just upgraded my broken TaylorMade Burner Superfast 9.5 Regular shaft to a Cobra Fly Z plus stiff shaft and I am not a big fan of this right now. On average I would say I'm losing 15 yards per drive, but on the good side I seem to hit almost every fairway while still putting it out 265 or so.

Why do you think I am losing yardage on a driver that's over 5 years newer? I've noticed that the stiff shaft weights 18 grams more, so it's heavier, and my new shaft is .75" shorter.

I also notice I'm not hitting the sweet spot on this driver yet (only played one round so far) and I seem to be hitting hit high on the inside of the face a bit more than I"d like.

What is the reason for the lack of distance? Is it because it's heavier and shorter shaft or that i'm not hitting flush on sweet spot yet because of the new feel?

This driver is also giving a very dull sound and not that nice ping, but it sure is pretty with the blue head.

thanks for any insight or feedback!

Is that the one with the adjustable weight front or back?  Do you have it in the back?  If not, I say put it in the back - that should give you a higher launch.

If adjusting the weight doesn't help - you're probably looking at a driver/shaft fitting.  You can most likely get fitted for a shaft that will give you the 15 yards back.

You might just need to adjust, too.  I switched from regular flex to stiff flex in my irons and it took a while for them to not feel so stiff.  I didn't measure but I felt as though these irons were about a half a club shorter than my previous ones.

I actually swing harder now because of the stiff shafts and I get a tiny bit more distance than before - but it took a while and there was definitely a time when I was quite on the fence about going back to regular flex.

This is the adjustable driver and the weight is in the front. I have no problem getting the ball airborne, and when I took my last lesson he said I should probably have a 9 degree. With that said I've been tinkering with my driver from 9, 9.5 and even down to 8.5 degree. I didn't try the 10.5 because I will just hit high bloopers I feel.

Either I'll get the feel for this or I will need to get a lighter stiff flex shaft? any recommendations?

You kind of answered your own question, but OTOH you are hitting almost every fairway. That's nice!

The club is likely heavier. My daughter lost about 15-20 yards as well, but is starting to gain her yardage back. The orange color is nice, so that's enough incentive for her to stick with it until she gets her distance back.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
