I've been Playing Golf for: 10 plus years

I'm having a really hard time getting distance with my driver. I'm only hitting it about 220 yards.  I feel like I'm making solid contact but i hit a high fade with no roll every time.  I'm playing an amp cell driver with a Fujikura shaft that is mid-torque, high kick, 6g, stiff flex.  Any recommendations on what I can do differently to generate more power?

I'm having a really hard time getting distance and I think this picture sums up why. Any thoughts on what I can do to prevent this or drills to help? I'm guessing you would call this being trapped?

Try this video, perhaps (warning, I"m no expert- just bumping the thread to get some attention):

Here's a screenshot of the problem this video addresses (a bit similar, anyway, but maybe not exact):

Good catch. Just noticed a swing thread exists. I'll merge them now.

I would say the issue you have is you get your right arm stuck behind you in the backswing and your elbow retracts behind the seem of your shirt.

Here is Rory near the top of his swing. See how you can see his right arm. His hands are higher. You can tell his right elbow is inline with the edge of his shirt.

Your left arm is pointing more behind you.  Your right arm can not be seen at all.  From this position you will be hard pressed to get your hands more in front of you.  The only way you can get your hands infront of you is if you stall your turn rates down. You do not want to do that. You need to work on not getting your right elbow stuck behind you in the backswing. This will give you room to fire your arms down better.

Thanks, everyone. I've worked really hard this year to stop coming over the top and I think by doing that I've just created this monster. It seems like for me to have a good swing from this position at the top I almost have to come over the top. I also didn't say that I'm 6'7" which doesn't help.

I've had a lot of people tell me I have a Matt Kuchar swing. He looks similar at the top. I'm just not sure how he gets his hands in front of himself.

It's hard to tell with out seeing a DTL view.

Kutchar here doesn't get his right elbow behind him. It's still in front of his right shirt seem.

Hey everyone- I took some more video today with an 8 iron and driver.  I tried to not let my right elbow get as far behind me.  Let me know what you think.

Those views are better. You may be flipping a bit, but I don't have Analyzer on this laptop.

The thread below is very helpful in regards to the driver. There are also some drills in the thread below that.

I've been concentrating on getting to a better impact position (better shaft lean and hands in front of me). I feel like I've made a little progress but not all the way there. I really feel like I need to concentrate on felling my hands going at the target toward impact to get full extension. The problem is this often leads to me coming over the top when I try to do this. Does anyone have any drills I could work on to specifically work on this?

Here's a video I found of my swing from June of last year before I got serious about swing changes. I know it's pretty bad but I feel like I actually get to a better impact position here. Maybe because I have all lateral movement and no shoulder turn? Could I have too much shoulder turn currently?

Below is a screen shot of impact in the two videos you posted. In the newer video, your weight is further forward and you have more hip turn but are flipping a bit. In the older video, you aren't flipping. Keep working on it by doing slower swings and do some of the Key 3 drills in the thread below.

Thanks! I agree this is definitely something I struggle with. I'll keep working on it.

    • Down the line and face on from today. Still feeling like I’m sticking the club into a hole in the ceiling above my right shoulder and then big loop inside to start downswing. That’s how it feels. Not how it looks though! Gotta keep working on this for a bit but I see a lot of progress. 😁
    • Day 5 (13 Mar 26) - Friday shootout cancelled- made it a practice round working from mixed tees. Plenty of up and down work around greens.  Best was a hole out birdie on the par 3 #5 hole - nice pitch and roll w/Pw from about 10yds off the green - dead center flagstick drop.  Much of round was focused on getting solid weight shift into lead foot.
    • Day 208 3-13 Worked on wrist arching and flow. First time hitting reall balls at a range in months. It was nice to see ball flight. Still not sure it beats my backyard practice station.
    • Three hole match - microphones on in the cart. It's fascinating listening to them talk about their shots and how they play them. I'm not normally a huge fan of the TM videos - they seem forced to me - but this one doesn't. It's also fun seeing their competitiveness over what on the face of it is a fairly meaningless 3 holes, but they can't help themselves.
