I play golf as a casual sport, and having fun is more important than playing well in my opinion. But, I am having trouble with hitting my irons (both long and short). One of two things is occurring often: I either top the ball or take a large divot before the ball. My only idea of what my problem is, is that my downswing is too steep. Does anybody have a tip to fix it? I will watch videos posted as well

You're lifting your head up.

Just kidding . .there's no way to know without taking a look at your swing - maybe post a video in the member swing forums or maybe see an instructor.

There are a lot of things that cause hitting it thin and or fat.  If you don't have a camera or can't get in for a lesson, etc . .you can start by assessing yourself against the 5 keys here on this site . .

This makes it much easier, imo, to try and understand your swing issues vs the results of poorly struck shots.

Even without seeing your video I can tell you that these are very typical swing symptoms.  The fix is very likely that you are not getting your weight forward in your downswing.  And, you are probably leading the downswing using too much arms verses weightshift->hipturn->droparms->release wrists.  The proper weight shift and sequence flatten your swing and almost everyone has to work at developing the skill to do it.

    • By today’s standards that’s certainly true, but they weren’t having any trouble hitting golf balls in 2005 so I’ve equipped myself with what was among the very best equipment around that time for a very reasonable investment. If I get to the point where I feel like I’ve outgrown that stuff, I’ll reward myself with something more current. But for now I don’t need adjustable loft and lie and modern head shape, just a good quality, proven club with a clean club face. For now I’m going to concentrate on the basics. I know you can get more yardage with newer woods, but I don’t care about distance nearly as much as consistency, and you can’t buy that for any price.

    • Because you're twisting it to hold it open. Forearms, etc. shouldn't be all that tense at setup.
