You need to have a Handicap in order to calculate your Course Handicap ((Handicap * Slope)/113) however, you need to know the Course Handicap to calculate your Adjusted Gross Score…

Is this one of those things like you need a Screen Actor’s Guild Card to work in Hollywood, but you need a job in Hollywood to get a Screen Actor’s Guild Card? Where does the leap of faith occur? Or am I misunderstanding how it works?

Just curious if anyone knows.. I suppose this is what I pay the extra $5 for to play on Thursdays, i.e., to not think about this stuff.

No it's not.  You don't need to know your adjusted gross score to get a handicap INDEX - you just need 5 or 6 (minimum) scores.  Once you get an index, then you can calculate your course handicap and start competing. http://www.usga.org/course-handicap-calculator.html  (Or just use the chart that is in most courses clubhouses)

You have it right.  When one arrives at the course, one calculates the course handicap using your current index.  Let's say the course's slope for the tee chosen is 125.

22.9 x 125/113 = 25.  20-29 means all hole scores in excess of 8 are limited to "8" by ESC.

When one is just starting the process of getting an index, one uses an ESC maximum of "10" until one posts 5+ scores and an actual index is issued.

    • Day 142 - 2025-02-19 Had 45 minutes after some GEARS lessons and before a junior. Got some good work in.
    • He wasn't a bad guy. And he was just trying to get out there and get some fresh air and exercise. He ended up liking the new cane a lot, because in addition to not making pock marks on the greens, it also stood up by itself. He didn't have to hand it to somebody to hold while he hit his shot. Or lean it against the cart. It would just stand up by itself. ... Kind of like those stand up putters. ... 🤣
    • Sounds like you guys came up with a great solution.
