I've been Playing Golf for: 3 months
My current handicap index or average score is: 36
My typical ball flight is: straight
The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: divot before ball


Videos: 

 

My progress has stalled due to not understanding the practical execution of weight shift. I have watched all videos possible on it but cannot seem to do it. I have been looking at adam scott's swing in particular and the way he shifts his weight but it is an enigma to me. I also struggle with maintaining my posture in the down swing. I have fallen in love with the game of golf over the last three months. Any help at all is enormously appreciated!

Welcome to The Sand Trap. Thanks for posting. Your swing is pretty good to start with. You just need to work on getting your weight to go forward more during the downswing.

Look at the Key #2 videos in this thread. You want to feel your hips start to slide forward and being to rotate as you start the downswing. Feel is not always real, so continue to film your progress and post here.

Also, check out the rest of the site. We would love for you to contribute in other threads.

I agree with @boogielicious- that's a nice swing for your listed handicap. 

Ill leave it to the instructors for what your priority should be, but I'll add that getting a proper grip and fixing my address posture has helped me get weight shift better.  I was too far on my heels and way to palmy and weak in my grip.  When those were tweaked by my instructor I feel like I was freed up to move more fluidly. 

so it can't hurt to go back to relearn those fundamentals from time to time. I believe they can be found in the instructional videos above.

Another tip is to really exaggerate  your tweaks for effect. Try a crazy strong grip and massive hip slide/weight forward- something like that. Crazy overdo it for feel. Sometimes that can jolt you into making a change, rather than small tweaks.

You definitely have to be a top contender for best swing with the highest handicap. Wow, you have so many good pieces in your swing that I needed to check your handicap like 6 times to be sure I read it right. 

The weight issue you identify is definitely something you can work on, but I'd also recommend that you take a look at @RandallT's thread on steepness. One of the big things I see is your first move down is to keep your shoulders closed and pull the handle down and instantly your shaft gets really steep. You need to flatten the shaft and it will help you open up your shoulders and sequence you better.

Thank you very much, I will try shifting forwards, my only fear is my head not being behind the ball at impact. And I am not sure I understand what you mean by the key #2 video? And I certainly will check out the rest of the site, I just don't really feel qualified to contribute to other threads until I understand golf better! :))

Understood, it makes sense that one should exaggerate an adjustment. Since I am learning golf from so many varied online sources, I never really have a clear idea on grip so I will look at it now. Thank you very very much!!!

They are the videos in that thread marked Key 2. The thread below defines what the keys are. Key 2 is Weight forward at Impact and the drills in the Instructional Thread show you how to work on that.

The main way I have been learning golf so far has been by comparing my swing to slow motion videos of certain pro golfers on youtube and they trying to adjust my swing to match theirs. That is perhaps why it LOOKS good but I haven't practiced actually hitting balls at targets. I figured I might as well capitalise on the fact that I am starting golf late and don't have a "natural swing" yet by not getting used to any swing untill I mold it perfectly. That is probably why my handicap is so low - I change swing every couple of days. 

Regarding the shoulders, I am not really sure I understand the relation between my shoulder and the flattening of the shaft, or should flattening the shaft be more of a feel in my hands? In any case I will look at Randall's thread on that topic as I have not really concentrated on it before. Thank you very much for your reply!

    • 70 today. The number looks good but, the course is a par 67 (5,110 yards, 64.3/115.). While the 70 took quite a few good shots to achieve, I am not counting that as shooting my age.
    • Played our town’s executive course this morning. Everything is closing but for now Huron Hills remains open. #13 is shaped like an upside down backwards L (dogleg left). Only 231 yard par 4. Dogleg has a tree guarding the corner and a sand bunker guards the green for those cutting the dogleg. Tiny green. About 10 years ago or more I would try to cut the dogleg. The hole is so short that even if one tangled with the tree or was bunkered, par was likely and birdie was still on the table. Now in my 70’s, I just hit it straight and try to wedge it close for birdie. Today I screwed up and pulled my drive. I wandered around a bit when my ball was not in the bunker. Finally located it on the approach to the green. Almost chipped in and tapped in the 2 inches for birdie. Best unintentional shot of the week. 😲

    • Why wouldn't it have? It's not like you were playing it as a 145yd par 5 and made a 2 or something.  Or not like it was playing 50yds to a temporary green or something either.
