Hi guys,

I'm not switching iron heads this year. (sticking to my EXI irons this year). I'm looking at getting different shafts however. Firstly, I have to give you some background.

Last winter I was dynamically fit for all of my clubs. My first shaft that fit me the best was actually the UST Mayima Recoil 680 (X-Flex), the KBS Tour 105 was similar so I went with that... After a season of the extra 20 grams in each iron... I tend to stay smoother with the UST Mayima. I thought of going with the KBS Tour 90 as well, as I hit them pretty well as well...

So what differences would I notice between the 3 shafts (KBS Tour 90, KBS Tour 105, and UST Mayima Recoil 680) in trajectory, dispersion, etc. Do you lose some feel when you play graphite?

Hello @onthehunt526 I've done a few fitted shaft change outs for several reasons but have played the KBS Tour (.335) shafts in 110 and 90.  The graphite 680 recoil I've hit alot I believe in 82 weight that I liked with a little higher ball flight.  The KBS's for me were medium flight but held true, as true as I could hit them, that is.  I settled for a Project X graphite shaft set to change out the KBS steel set of clubs I have.   Got to load them as they seem stiffer.  Point is, the shafts felt, performed, played, differently between the weights and manufactures for me.  It was hard to decide.

I have the KBS Tour C-Taper 90 Light in my SLDR irons, and the KBS Tour C-Taper 105 in my Nike Vapor Speed irons; both shafts are R-flex.

The 90 Lights are a proprietary shaft made for TM, and after some sleuthing I found a tech who described the 90 Lights as similar to the Tour 90, but launching slight lower. I found the 90 Lights to be a lively shaft (positively, could sense the unloading and whether I was getting good drop) that got good height. (The SLDRs are still in competition with the X20 Tours for what goes in the bag.)

The C-Taper 105 shafts worked well in the short  irons, but I had general general trouble with the set's longer irons. The CT 105 got good height and decent spin without ballooning.

Again, fitters say the lighter C-Tapers launch a bit lower than comparable weight KBS Tours.

I have hit the KBS Tour (110) several times in iron tests, and also found it lively. Mizuno recommended I get it in Stiff-softstepped (I thank that might be a big harsh day-to-day).

@onthehunt526 asked -  Do you lose some feel when you play graphite? |

I have tried various Recoil shafts this past year, mainly in Callaway irons. The Recoils, especially the Recoil 95 or Recoil 600-series, seem to have a solid feel. The 600s are below 90 grams in weight, but don't feel feathery like earlier graphite iron shafts did.

The graphite has a certain feel, it's just a bit smoother than steel. I agree with Hatchman.

    • Of course. I've used different words to start, but like 90-95% of the time it's been this one. And I'm unlikely to switch now.

    • Angle is not a factor. I hit the ball 100’ high. Par is net birdie. My CH is 16. The rough between the bunkers is like 10’ wide though. That’s not something you’re going to try to hit on purpose. Most of the area to the left of that is fescue/native vegetation and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a flat lie in any of it. It’s the second hole.
    • Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group. Cheers all,
    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
