Hi. sorry if this is an old turnip of a topic - I'm not much good at navigating my way round forums.

I just notice that some very tasty drivers - such as the Cobra SZ440 are being offered now at very cheap prices (£99 from American Golf Discount). How do I find out what drivers will be banned by the PGA (and when). Will any of these clubs still be legal at club competition level?

I was at The Open this week, and should have been able to find out there, but it's difficult to form a sentence when your tongue is hanging out gawping at all the luvverly new equipment on show

Someone from "other than the United States" may have to help you answer this question, but here in the U.S. the CoR is capped at 0.83. Anything below that's legal.

I think in Europe it used to be 0.86, but that's coming down to 0.83 soon. But I could be wrong.

Jan. 1, 2006 is the day that the new rules about drivers go into effect outside of the U.S. (where they've been in place for a few years). Currently, there's no limit on COR in drivers outside of North America, with the exception of the laws of physics. These high-COR drivers can be used for recreational play, including rounds recorded for handicap purposes. And I think they can even be used in competition at the club/amateur level, but not in tour events.

So if you plan on playing competitively or maintaining a handicap, make sure you have a conforming driver by Jan. 1. Or if you just play for fun and want the extra 3-5 yards a high-COR driver might get you, then seek out one of the non-conforming drivers before they're gone.
