Hi all,quick question..

I used to game the r11 with an aldila dvs 60 stiff and I had great numbers with it (never on a monitor but course yardages were great),the end of last year I upgraded my driver on a blind buy as the price was good to an SLDR 12*..it came with a diaman blue which felt boardy (I put it down to a lower torque than I was used to) so sold it and got a prolaunch blue as it was similar to the dvs I used to game (torque wise atleast, prolaunch was high launch dvs mid but hey whatevs) the prolaunch goes some but carrys 220/230 max then falls out the sky,now I know it all depends on swing AoA etc and getting fitted would be the perfect option but out of interest has anyone gamed the aldila dvs in an sldr and if so what were your findings.i can pick a dvs up cheap at the minute so tempted to buy to try.

Finding a driver that suited can be some what of a marathon, over past 3 odd years I changed driver quite few times and at a reasonable cost, I tried the SLDR in 10.5 with a diamana red shaft but it was not for me, then a ping G25 with a TFC 189 R shaft but could not control it, then a Titleist 915D with a Diamana red 50 was a big disappointment it never got to a course only hit it on the range, sold it real quick. Then I picked up a Cleveland custom black with a bassara E 50 R shaft great driver for tight courses you can put the ball off tee on a sixpence out around the 200m. Looking for more length off tee I then got a TM aeroburner black with a Reax 55 R shaft, great distance with a more lower trajectory, so it used for open courses and Cleveland for tight courses. Moral of the story it can take some time to find a driver that suit's and at some cost.

Titleist 915 D2-10.5°, Titleist 915 F 15°, PING G25 16.5°, PING G30 Hybrid 19°

Agree totally, ide been through three drivers before the R11 and that took some time to work in a good feel for the club,at present as I mentioned the SLDR is a good solid club but my carry is anything from 210 to 230 with no rollout (granted time of year and boggy courses dont suit here in the UK at the minute) but my old R11 used to carry 240 with ease,I bought the aldila and it arrived yesterday, taking it to local pro for adaptor and grip fit..be interesting to see what flight and numbers I get with that combo as at the minute even good solid strikes with the prolaunch blue just fall out the sky.

Had game on Sunday with a guy who using a Aldila Shaft king cobra 10.5 head driver think said was a 60 gram regular, but he in his late fifties and did he get some yardage out it, I hit my TM aeroburner around the 230 mark most times (I am late sixties), he was constantly about 30/40 in front of me so reckon you choice off shaft might be good one. The parting conversation for day was great drives, but sad about your wedge play, I shot 81 he was + 85. Just remember length not everything.

I know the aldila was a great shaft in my r11 summer here in UK I was getting 275+ drives which were crazy for me,im not sure if the tech in the head of the sldr differs to the r11 recquiring an upward AoA (hence the loft up campaign) so I might have to have it set higher to get full benefits,if the tried and tested shaft doesnt get me the numbers im after I might revert back to the r11 or maybe m1 430.

Hope the new shaft works out, let know the outcome. Played today my TM driver was on song, but a couple irons shots off the par three's were pretty awful.

My only question is, why did you find it necessary to buy a new driver when the R11 was working just fine?

The sldr was a giveaway at the price so thought ude give it a try,ive just come back from a round and the flight is miles better (avg 240 with shot measure on garmin s1) it launches mid then continues to its peak on a trajectory I was used to on the r11 so so far so good,it doesnt "feel" any different to the prolaunch for loading or impact its just more of a gradual flight,as mentioned previous the prolaunch got up quick then dropped, didnt fire out of the face so to speak.

Yeah, pretty much..I just didnt like the loss of distance of about 20+ yards and the flight wasnt what I was used to..in all fairness its no longer than the r11 was atm but ive not gamed it on a hot dry day, every round this year in the UK been wet either underfoot or through rain.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
