This is something I think about a lot.  My theory is that the less bend plus twist on the back while trying to swing the less strain there.  

So from dtl view for myself I like to see the angles of hip turn and shoulder turn as close to each other as can be.  I also like to see the hips not stalling.  IMO stalling the hips with a steeper angle of the shoulders coming through is putting more strain on the discs.  I have no data to back this up.  All thoughts on factors relating to golf safety welcome.  It's not my intent to debate only share ideas if anyone else thinks about this.

Here's Snead...Hips and shoulders more parallel.  Imo.  Seems to me really good knee work and hip turn with zero poisonous X factor is a safer way to swing.

I have recently started watching videos by Brandel Chamblee. He talks about the "old school" hip turn which was fuller that the restricted hip turn of the modern swing. I have begun turning my hips more and I believe it is helping my back.
