My son Colby first took interest at age 5, and he showed signs that he could play.   This is a pic from when he was 5 or 6yrs old hitting balls in the freezing cold in the backyard. (whiffle golf balls)  he was a natural and his form was pretty good for a kid that young.

He used to hit balls until his hands bled, and then I'd tape his fingers and he'd hit more balls.   My wife traveled for a year for work reasons and we couldn't play..then I lost him.  (I was home with the kids in the evenings...we couldn't get out)

Recently, he's been a bit of a bowling sensation....(I will get him back to golf at some point).. He just turned 15 and he's making some noise on the hardwood bowling against older kids 20 and under with some success..... June 4..on the bowling website....his name is Colby..he's bowled 5th 300 game.......the 5th was his first sanctioned 300 during tourney play.  You can watch video of Colby's 10th frame below...........

I don't play as much golf these days because I am following him around to the tourneys..... He's competing again this weekend....no golf for me, but it's fun to support and be there.  He's pretty good at it, so that helps because he tends be in the hunt.  Our summer vacation this year is going to Cleveland so he can bowl Nationals. I am from Ohio, so going to Cleveland isn't terrible as it sounds, but at least he is doing what he enjoys.  I personally....would prefer a beach vacation, but we'll make the most of the trip.  We'll find a way to make a side trip to Cedar Point in Sandusky.  (I had a season pass there when I was a kid..LOL) If you like roller coasters, Cedar Point is one of the best parks in the world....

When it comes to bowling...he's on a roll.  Yes...his 5th 300.......and he just turned 15. Probably not his last..... We travel so he can bowl around the country to compete. Golf is my passion, but I don't play as much these days so I can watch the kid do what he enjoys.

I lost him, but I am getting him back now!!!!...........now he wants to play again!.........I am floored......He's 15 now....he wants to play....and he is asking for DAD for help!!  How cool is that???   it took me 2 seconds to buy him a beginner set of clubs......(grownup size)  I bought him a nearly full set..on the spot.  I just wanted to get him clubs to see where this journey would lead us...........  He has clubs now.... (albeit a starter set)....if he gets serious and all....I'll hook him up...for sure.

My sons first set of clubs..................(adult sized clubs)

He is back to wanting to hit balls, so I will take him to the range..............  I will get his grip right...and set him down the path!   I will get him "squared away"....I cannot wait to get him to the point that he can tee off with my group...early AM....weekend...Prime time.....woah....

His swing is natural........ When he was 5....his swing was  better than many adults I have played with....LOL  Father/son golf!  I would like this very much!!  My father and I had this..... I want this with my son.  With that said, I was always a much better golfer than my dad...... I don' want that for my kid.   I hope he is better than me! I will be there to root him along the whole way.........

I am what you call a baddazz hacker...... 0-4HC depending on the time of year...........LOL

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
