You dont have to swing weight if you dont want, Some people think swing weighting is way over hyped, first time i built a set I did not swing weight. Now I want to know they are perfect in every way. I weight sort componants spine alligne all shafts a(flo) swing weight and lie check, When I hit a bad shot it is me, no more excuesses lol. For me it was adictive I love golf and i love to tinker with my equipment, once I learned how to do it i was hooked.

I love tinkering with my clubs even though I'm not a clubmaker. I always do my grips and I enjoy it too. I want to learn how to reshaft soon but that might be dangerous for me. I'll end up wasting my money trying out millions of shafts.

Reshafting steel shafts is simple but practice on a old cheap set of clubs once first. Heat the head so you can pull the shaft out. (this loosens the epoxy) pull the shaft out and clean the inside of the hosel out with a wire brush, (golfworks 10 bucks for 2) then you have to tip trim the new shaft to flex, prep the tip and epoxy it in! dont forget the ferrule cus you cant add it later. Wait for the epoxy to dry and cut to finish length. add a grip and your done. Once yoru hooked you can get into swing weighting and all the other bs that goes with it then it gets expensinve lol!

I'm getting very very close to having an all component club bag with clubs I've built myself. About the only clubs I am going to have to work to get out of the bag are the TM V-Steel or Adams RPM LP fairway woods. They are just a very good clubs that will be hard to better myself. The Adams is probably going to get re-shafted this year, however.

It is kind of cool to show up at the course and have people look at your clubs and ask questions about them. There is also a special feeling hitting a great shot with a club you built yourself!

Glad to see so many people chiming in on this. I thought I'd check on this post tonight because it's been i while. I just ordered two more driver heads, shafts, a 9 iron head and shaft for it. I did get some shafting beads, swingweight scale, and heat gun (partially to fix my first mistake with the original driver). I'll let you know how it all plays out. My goal with the new drivers is to maintain or improve on how I hit my current one (TM Burner with Matrix X-Con 6 shaft) by properly fitting the new ones to me, but for less than half the price. The 9 iron I bought and got a graphite shaft to put in it. I currently play steel iron shafts but was curious as to the difference in the feel of a graphite shaft if properly fit, trimmed, and weighted. I'm definitely in the beginner stage regarding all of this but it is fun learning and trying new things. I'll inform you of my success (or failures) in a few days.

One of the drivers was a HUGE success. The second one not so much but I'll get to that. The first driver I built for my brother. I used a CT-250 8.5* head and Graffaloy ProLaunch Platinum X-Stiff shaft. I believe it is the farthest I've ever seen a ball fly. I was pretty proud to see my brother hitting the ball so well but part of it was pride in my work. I took the driver with me and before I made it home he had already called me asking how much he could buy it for. The second driver I built for myself was the same head but a Proforce V2 Stiff 76 gram shaft. I hit it will and it took off like a rocket ship before putting on the blinker and turning right. The swingweight was a bit heavy so I trimmed it down some and will try again. It's now at 44 1/2 inches and D2. Of course its possible I need the lighter version of this shaft but time will tell after I get a chance to hit it again after my latest modifications to it. All in all, I'd call it a success.

If you are going to work with graphite shafts you NEED to buy a shaft extractor. Steel shafts are heat and twist. If you heat and twist graphite you have mush and the shaft is shot.
the whole club making thing is way easier than most people think. It.s like any other hobby, It gets expensive and its fun if you have the gear and the space

    • Yea, it's more complicated than your high school projectile motion equations.  I am thinking it could increase under certain conditions. A gust of wind blowing in the same direction as the spin, causing more high and low pressure on the ball in a certain way that it increases the spin?  It has zero vertical velocity at its apex. So, it is all velocity caused by gravity for the vertical component.  Yea, landing angle is a big thing.  It is parabolic. Your apex is 90 yards in the air. A 30-yard elevated green is 1/3rd that height. At the apex, your vertical descent angle is zero, it should be horizontal. So, you are going from zero theta to let's say 45 degrees. Even if it was linear, let's say you're landing angle is close to 30 degrees. That is less than a driver and probably is significant.  Yea, it depends on how you hit it. Especially for downhill shots. If you hit a flighted shot, it might react more like a normal shot because of the lower launch and lower apex relative to your position. Versus a normal shot might come in at like 70 degrees, instead of 45 degrees.

    • Spin will decay slightly over time, but not by a lot. The horizontal portion of the velocity will also decay due to air resistance. The vertical component will be increasing since the ball is accelerating due to gravity (albeit that the spin is creating lift, which will counteract that some). Neither of those has much of an impact of how the ball will react. The biggest difference is the vertical land angle. The angle theta prime (not sure how to show that on here) will be shallower than theta. That means the ball will stop faster at theta than at theta prime. The other thing is because there is still a horizontal component to the velocity, it will carry less far at theta prime than at theta.  The effects of those two things work in opposite directions. Which one "wins" will depend on ground conditions, ball flight, spin, any necessary carry distances, etc. Fortunately the margins are fairly small so you can wing it with enough experience. The calculation of the carry distance change is what your range finder estimates when you have slope turned on.
    • So, I was looking at this image and wondered what the best way is to play your approach to an elevated green versus a lowered green. Is the spin and velocity profile at θ' much different than at θ? I don't know the physics of it but to my wee brain, it would seem that at θ' the spin would be higher but velocity lower. At θ the spin would seem to be lower but velocity higher since it has more time to fall from its peak where it would be zero. Even the image below is off visually since we know the arc of the ball flight isn't consistent throughout.    It's okay if you tell me I'm overthinking this. 😂
