I've been Playing Golf for: 3 years

My current handicap index or average score is: 9
My typical ball flight is: low
The shot I hate or the "miss" trying to reduce/eliminate is: low hook. I've been struggling with low ball flight. I tend to draw the ball, not cut. Feels like I am hitting the toe of the club. Any suggestions for my swing would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you!

You go from very steep (you'd miss the ball) to very shallow… because you have to, or again, you'd miss the ball. But anyway, the fix is to feel and do more of the opposite: feel that the shaft is laid off at the top, and then feel that you're almost rolling your forearms the other direction (that piece may not be needed if you can lay it off a bit at the top… your body may do what it has to do to hit the ball from there).

So the club at the top needs to almost be more horizontal than vertical like it is in that video. Is that what you are saying? Thanks so much for the response and feedback!!

Hey Mate, I am not in anyway an instructor, but you have the same fault I used to have, so thought I would give my input.

Your swing is excellent on the whole, but when you transition and start your downswing, your head and upper body move in front of the ball.

This robs you of dynamics and leads to a flip release. Most likely why you are getting toe strikes and a low ball flight.

I think you would improve greatly if you add secondary tilt to your swing.

So the changes/suggestions I would make:

1) at address, make sure your head is behind the ball.

2) make sure your head never moves forward in your downswing.

3) In your backswing, turn your shoulders and torso behind the ball, and feel more weight in your right heel.

4) In your transition/downswing, don't change your sequence, but feel like your upper body stays behind the ball all the way to impact. Will be a very strange feeling at first, almost like you are hanging back.

See below for images which should clarify what I mean by the above.

Let me know if that makes sense or if you have any questions.

    • I kind of like this interpretation especially if you think about it the unplayable rule would probably put you in a better spot.  using back on the line releief.
    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
