OK, I just got back from a weekend trip with my wife and my mother-in-law gave me a book that she bought at a consignment shop called "The Game I Love" written by the Slammer. I open it up this weekend only to discover that Sam actually autographed the inside page. The book could pass for new. She scored major points with this treasure.

Later that night I watched a show called "Celebrity Golf" with Sam Snead. It was a handicapped 9 hole match with Bob Hope. Sam was smashing his drives 275 and then ripped off three birdies in a row. His swing was like butter. The more I watched it, the more I realized how important tempo is to the swing. He definitely was a swinger.

I started reading his book and it is a real eye opener to what golf was like in his day. He actually played the same set of clubs on tour for almost 20 years. That is unheard of these days. He also could drive the ball over 300 yards and won a few of the PGA Long Drive events that they would have from time to time. In fact, sports writers called him in the 1940s the "Big Bertha of Golf". He exercised everyday and was ahead of his time on some of his views. Anyway, his career covered 7 decades with golf and the book is worth a read.

It makes you wonder how good he would be in today's world with all of the advances that we have seen in the last 30 years. We may never know but the man had a sweet swing.

I'm a huge Sam Snead fan. I just saw that Celebrity Golf and I had to laugh. Sam should have been playing at a +6 against Hope's 6 hdcp. Then it might have been fair. But, knowing what I do about Sam, I don't think he would have given up those strokes.
