I was fitted for -1/2" but was told I could stick with standard length ( which I did) since I've played it my whole life and have a handicap on the "+" side.

So a few weeks ago i got a deal on a set of 2014 TM MC/PXI shafts...didn't realize at the time, they are 1/2" short.  No biggie, I was going to clean them up and resell them but now ...not so sure. ..they feel tooo good at address.

I've attached a picture at address...Top one is 1/2" shorter, Bottom one is standard length.  I love the line coming down from my shoulders through my forearm in the top picture.  With my current irons in the bottom picture my forearms and hands are out further past the line.

My question is will this be a good thing?  Will I lose or gain distance in your experiences.  I know a longer driver shaft gives more distance but this address position with the shorter length feels like I can go after it harder.  Thinking if this is good, I'll cut down my Pings next year.

You play a different brand of golf (good!) than I do, so I'm not sure what to tell you.

My irons are about 1/4" short... not a whole lot, but I tended to hit irons on the toe half of the clubface. What I started doing in line up the ball between horizontal center and the hosel, and I'm getting more center(ish) hits.

For you, all I can say is get some launch monitor data - outdoors if possible - and see how the two compare. If the shorter ones give improvement, you might switch to them. If it's a tie... probably keep the long ones.

Being that you have a + HDCP, you possibly have learned to compensate for slightly longer clubs.

Don't end up in Tiger's trap and ruin your game chasing idealized perfection. Go with what works.

Last night at work I hit 6,8 and w with both brands on the GC2.

Taylormade MC/pxi 6.0 are the 1/2" shorter irons.  I hit them a bit longer and had a more consistent shot shape.  Draw or straight.  The Ping ie-1/Modus 105 stiff standard length had me lose some to the right. Distance was about the same, TM a bit longer.  Ping launched higher and spun more.  But not a ton. The Ping was inconsistent...6200-7200 rpm with an 8 iron.  The Taylormade was 5800-5900.  Height was 35 yards with the Ping and 32 with the Taylor.

Taylormade felt more solid, not as many miss hits.

So...we'll see...I like the consistency and lower launch with the Taylormade but not sure about the lower spin.... Seems like the pxi is really a lighter better feeling version of the PXI.

@Typhoon92 I wonder if it is just the shaft that you like, regardless of length which just may be coincidental? Merry Merry to All, -Marv

How tall are you, just curious? I realize height is not the only factor, but just wondering.

5'6", 143 lbs.

LDA stuff for me used to hitting a longer length driver.  I would never go 44" in that.  Irons though...hmmm

Know what's funny Marv? I was fitted for the pxi 6.0 when it came out but never did anything.  Even the px 6.0 eerily always came up on the Mizuno optimized as well.

When the Modus came out as a no charge option as well as the px ( not pxi) the Ping fitter selected the Modus because i was looking at lighter weight.

I've seen where both shafts are similar but the pxi being a tad heavier and more tip stiff which my launch numbers show.

A few years ago I picked up this same set more or less, ( the 4-7 were cb) but couldn't hit them to save my life.  Regular length and they swingweighted at D5.  All I could do was hook them...worst hooks I've ever seen so I sold them to buy the Pings.  It always bugged me...but they so heavy which i think was the problem.  When I saw these I could not resist.  These swing weight to c9 with the golf pride co2 midsize grips...feel much better.

My next step is to choke down on my Ping/Modus irons and look at the nunbers.

Happy Holidays back at u too!

In the GolfWorks troubleshooting matrix for clubfitting, one symptom of possibly too-long clubs is hitting all over the clubface. Now, you hitting all over the clubface would be a much tighter pattern than mine.

Still, you might put face impact decals on the Pings and see what kind of pattern you get.If it's a wider scatter than with the TM MCs, then the shorter shaft might fit you better.

WUTiger, my miss is out to the toe.  I don't miss the center a lot but the extra length on the Pings puts my forearms " out," more...instead of a straight line running from my shoulders down through my forearms andbtonmy toes.

What happens is I get an inconsistent path.  I hit the center or near center but the inconsistent path is the problem.  The shorter length iron gives me a. Insistent path and a consistent shot pattern.

I'm chomping at the bit to do my Pings.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
