I did fittings for Titleist AP1s, and Ping G400s. The Titleist fitter put me into a Kuro Kage stiff, and the Ping fitter put me into the AWT regular. My results with the graphite and steel were pretty much the same. I really don't like the Titleist set with two gap wedges, and I've played Ping irons since 1986, so I'm more inclined to go with the Pings. I've always played stiff, and want to know when some of you knew when it was time to switch to regular. My ss with the 7 iron was 85. Thanks

AWT = Ascending Weight Technology, come in Soft Regular, Regular, Stiff, Extra Stiff. The shafts are lighter in the long irons and the weight gradually increases into the short irons. The differences in weight will give a "flighted" ball flight where the long irons will encourage a higher ball flight and short irons be lower and more control.

The next generation KURO KAGE™ TiNi Irons incorporate Titanium Nickel (TiNi) Wire to the Low Resin Content (L.R.C.) prepreg and a smooth overall bend profile with a lower balance point, all in a premium constant weight iron product. This design and materials provide better swing weight without added clubhead weight, increased stability, in a stable, solid-feeling shaft.

@caniac6 when you were fitted, did they use any various lengths shafts in the fitting?
Also, was the fitting done with the use of any data with the use of Trackman or another monitor?

Without data, the only thing which can determined, would be the different ball flight paths, higher or lower trajectory.
With reg flex shafts, off centered hits would be a bit more forgiving.

The fittings were done with standard length shafts. Trackman was used in both fittings. I don't remember much about the spin numbers, but both fitters said they were good. The ball flight with both clubs were higher and longer than myG30s with stiff shafts.

As CR says, without launch monitor it is hit and miss to determine the characteristics of each club. If the launch data will tell you if the club/shaft combinations are usable for you. After that, go with the set you like best.

Also, could you clarify which Kuro Kage shaft version you are using? I suspect it's one of these two:

  • TiNi 85 Stiff = 88 grams
  • TiNi 105 Stiff = 108 grams

The weight is critical: in some sub-100 gram steel shafts, I possibly could handle stiff. But for 115-gram or so shafts, no way.

For Ping G400, the ascending-weight shaft DG S300 AMTs range in weight from 106-130 grams.

The AMT helps flight the ball in launch, extra lift for longer irons and less ballooning of shorter irons. Consider it for the future.

Focus, connect and follow through!

I would suggest testing a complete set of both clubs.
Demo days are a great means to have hands on experience.
Or possibly at the golf store.

Making the switch to reg flex shafts will be a minimal transition.
Control, trajectory and distance are key factors for players when making equipment changes.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
