Don't tell my current putter, because we are getting along fairly well, and this may be like fantasizing about a date with Charleze Theron, but I am pondering getting fit for an Edel putter.

Fitters nearest me only do the Torque Balanced; fitters that do both styles are considerably further away. Like and hour or so versus 5 or 6. I like the look of the TB just fine, but am I limiting myself too much by only looking at those? The timeline is long, so theoretically I could plan for the longer trip, but its not like I would be in the neighborhood. Putter replacement is not the priority that driver replacement is; maybe not even this season, so like I said, I could plan for it if it is important.

As a side note, would it be heresy to put a Super Stroke on an Edel?

Few things on Edel:

  1. Most players fit into the Torque balanced putter shapes, so whatever. I preferred the classic version so I went out of my way to get one.
  2. The round edel grip helps keep your hands out of the putting stroke, but I have also seen guys change it for a normal grip or super stroke grip. That's your preference.
  3. The putter is responsible for 28-36 of your strokes a round, driver is 14 tops. I would fix your current swing because every driver does the same thing, and get the putter. I know that kind of contradicts LSW since the separation value of the long game is much higher than putting.

Ill never buy another putter again because the Edel is perfect, for me

is buying an Edel putter without a fitting any different than buying any other putter off the rack?

I'd opt for the full trip. Though most people "fit" into the TB, if you're not, that's a wasted trip and fitting fee. And if that fitter only has the TB, they may try to "force" you into it a little.

The TB is a bit less expensive, of course. Less customization does that for you. Also, less personalization, too.

No. But give the round grip it comes with an honest shot.

No.

What is the difference? My local Golf Galaxy has Edel putters, but they are not listed on Edel's website as a fitter. The guys that work there seem to be good guys, but I'm not sure I'd trust them to fit a hat, let alone an expensive putter.

Between buying an Edel putter without a fitting, and buying any other putter off the rack.

There isn't really one.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
