I'm getting new clubs...advice?

I'm going to be purchasing new clubs (iron set) in a few months and would love to hear some advice. I'm around a 20 handicap and have a fairly pronounced draw. I think I've narrowed it down to the TaylorMade r7s and the Ping G10s. I hear the r7s are a little longer, but I'll sacrifice distance for accuracy at this point. Thoughts? Thanks!

I'd say both are good choices. I've been in your shoes more than once before, and here is what I have settled on as a good way to end up with exactly what I want: find a used set on eBay (the r7s would be very easy to find), try them out, and resell them if you don't like. Ive been able to do this 5 or 6 times and have generally been able to break even on the transactions.

Thanks for the suggestion...good idea. The only problem is that I need +1s and I'd like to get them custom fit to try and fix some of the glaring flaws in my swing

Try and find a certified fitter near your home. These guys can combine various shafts with heads, make adjustments during your fitting and give you the club specified for both your swing and the type of game you want to play.

I did this, it was a long process, almost 3 hours but it was educational and worth it. I have several irons that have been made stronger than normal and had the lies adjusted. Knowing that your irons are customized to everything you want is just another step in trying to make this game, easier.

Well, if you have a pronounced draw and you would like to reduce it, you might like to try the tour/tp version of some brands as the less offset could SLIGHTLY reduce your draw.

i did the same thing.. absolutely love them. (but fear ebay.. LOTS of scams these days).

the r7's hit Straight and Long (well.. when you hit them correctly..haha) . Me likey.

I am not discounting the R7's, as they are great irons, but not to long ago I was getting new irons as well, I was looking at Nickent Genex ARC Blades, and Ping i10's. Well long story short I tried the G10's instead of the i10's and they felt great, solid straight shots, easy to hit, and forgiving. Although I got the Nickent's, and the i10's were my second choice the G10's were great game improvement irons, or super game improvements (what ever you want to call them).

Go to a golf shop, (Golf Galaxy, Golfsmith, etc.) get on a launch monitor and get properly fit. Usually they do the fitting for free if you purchase the clubs they fit you for.

I would recomend the G10's. I tried these at a display day and they were sweet as. I tried the grafite shafts and they felt like butter.
But way to pricey-$1500.00 just for a set of irons aussie and then woods/hybrids on top.
If you can afford worth considering.

I went to my neighborhood golf galaxy and swung the g10, i10, and r7's and prior to hitting them I was pretty set on the g10's until the custom fitting person informed me that if i want to get better in terms of shaping shots in the future that the g10's were "super game improvement" irons as opposed to the i10's and r7's. needless to say after tested them out the feel of the r7's were amazing to me. i think they also offer more workability than the g10's do. whatever you decide, im sure you can't go wrong with either of them, just depends on what your taste is in terms of playing a round with a more forgiving club as opposed to a club that might help you become a better player and in the future, go for an even more of a "players" style set.

I totally agree. The Ping G and I series (except blades) are seen more as game improvement clubs and are not really a 'players club'. Although you see the g-10 logo on Ping sponsored player's hats, they are always certainly playing either the S58 or S59 semi-bladed versions.

The r7 would be my pick of the bunch, not only is it a game improvement iron. It will offer you great playability/workability too.
