I'm looking to upgrade my irons to a good cavity back set for mid handicap. I've gone through lessons and made significant improvements from my listed 20. I need something cost effective bordering on cheap. Leaning toward Wilson Pi5...but not yet convinced. Any suggestions?

Callaway X-18, they have a cavity, and they are cheaper because the X-20's are out, and have been out for a while.

I would highly recommend the Pi5! they are going really cheap now too.

i suggest that you go for them as they offer forgiveness and will offer playability for many years to come.

It really is a personally preference though. Those Macgregors are greats clubs and not too difficult to hit but if you want something even more forgiving than these are great at $150 New!!

Dave, I started out with those Adams clubs and dumped them within 2 months. The fat soles and deep cavity just had no feedback at all. I didn't like playing with them so I got rid of them and used a friends Silver Scots for a while...I actually liked those quite a bit. I got my set, which is a clone of the Nike progressive cavity set a couple of months ago. However, I've noticed that even when I really get a hold of it, I can only knock my 9 iron about 130 or so...I was puttting the Silver Scots out about 145-150 on good hits. I think even though they're close, there's something to be said for name brand clubs.

      This is an awesome breakdown. most of the bigger tournaments usually have one wave with the advantage, Thank you for the breakdown. If it is soft then it will be a lower final score

      Over the past 15 years, the winning score has ranged from -10 to -20. Mostly around -13.  Here is Thursday and Friday weather. Saturday and Sunday weather. I think the course will play soft. Plenty of sky cover, lots of rain on Thursday. Fairways and greens will probably stay soft throughout the week.  In terms of tee times, I think Thursday morning and Friday afternoon have the biggest advantage.       We have a very difficult but mostly showy course this week. Lets see what they got. This course offers so many chances to get into trouble it is really a mental minefield. I am excited to see who can handle it and who cant. Last year we got a foreshadowing of JJ and Rory, I am excited for this year Who do people have winning? what will the winning score be? I am thinking 12 or 13 under
