Irons or wedges?

Saving up for some new clubs and trying to decide whether to spend the cash on getting a new set of irons or some new wedges.

My short Game is pretty decent and I feel is something I can build on but not sure how much getting fitted for wedges would help.

My irons in the other hand is ok but lack consistency and getting fitted might help.

I only started playing lady July and At the might I don't have a HC but generally score in the mid to high 80's and improving all the time.

Any advice would be welcome!

I would say irons based off of what you posted. There are probably bigger gains to be made in terms of scoring with properly fitted irons. That or invest in lessons since you mentioned you just started playing. Lessons may help with your ball striking and may shed light on if your current set of irons are a good fit for you already.

That and buy and read LSW, Lowest Score Wins. I recently just purchased this book and I'm about 2/3 through it. I wish I had read it sooner.

What do you currently play?

Big different in cost from set of irons vs set of wedges.

Driver: :callaway: Diablo
Woods: :callaway: Big Bertha 2 & 4
Irons: Miura MC 102's 3 - PW & Mizuno MP 67's 3 - W
Wedges: :mizuno: MP-R12 52* & 58*
Putters: :ping: WRX Ti4

Yes I have had several lessons and they definitely have helped but am also now looking in my bag to see if I can make any improvements to my game there!

I just looked up the Ben Hogan bh-5 irons and they look pretty nice.  Are they all beat up or too hard for you to hit?

I would go to a local store and hit some clubs to get an idea of what you like.  Look at the used section as well as deals can be had.... might be able to get new-er irons and some previously loved wedges too!

Yeah they are pretty decent clubs, I'm just a bit inconsistent with them. Whether the is due to me being new to the game or them being not fitted properly I don't know how.

I'm not really looking at getting another set of second hand clubs-if I get irons then I want them to be new and fitted!

I hear ya. Once you know your "fitted info" it becomes easier to buy clubs as I am 1* upright and +1 " for length and have bought a few "barley used" sets for next to nothing.

If that is the case, I would ask your coach for a recommendation on if/when you would benefit from getting fit for new irons. Since they know your swing best.

True, he probably knows me better then I know myself when it comes to golf! Although it still leaves me with the question of irons or wedges!

      Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.

      I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.

      Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
