I'm trying to gather some info on ultralight steel shafts. Does anyone have any experiences (good or bad) with them? Some of the ones I'm looking at are:

TT Dynamic Gold SL - 105 grams
TT GS 75 - 86 grams
TT TX-90 - 105 grams
Royal Precision Microlite 80 - 97 grams

Do the cut weights on these come close to the claimed cut weight?
Is there that much difference in your play?
Is there one to stay away from?
Any other recommendations?

i thought you would be talking about NS PRO 850GH (85g) or 750GH (75g)
i don't have them but i did heard from ONE clubmaker. He said because the walls with these shafts are so thin (hence lightweight) if you swing hard and play a lot, they might lose their stiffness.
but that's only from ONE clubmaker.

Wow, this post is two hours old and it's already been

linked to from Golf for Women . Anyway...
I'm trying to gather some info on ultralight steel shafts. Does anyone have any experiences (good or bad) with them?

I was fitted for irons a few years ago (more as background for a story than for an actual fitting). I asked why someone might want a lightweight steel shaft over a heavier one. The obvious answer is that less weight means a faster swing speed. When I asked why not just go graphite to get the added vibration dampening, he said "expense and steel is still a bit stronger, by a smidge."

So those, I guess, are the positives. Or rather, the one positive: increased swing speed. The cons - for me - included far less reliability. I could hit six or eight shots with the standard weight shaft (DG S300 in my case, that day) and all the marks for a 6-iron would be on the center of the clubface. One big blue dot on the impact tape. With the lighter weight shaft, my contact was all over the face. A heavier shaft wants to stay on plane more and I got a bit too wild and carried away with the lighter weight shaft. From, uhh, an article written by "someone" comes this:

Source: Titleist Article After watching a few more swings with the 38.5"/64.5° and deciding on it as the specs, we next tried some different shafts. Shaft weight becomes an issue when you add a full inch to an iron, and Eric was interested in the Nippon NS Pro 970. The NS Pro 970 weighs over 25 grams less than the DG S300 in that length. The general rule when fitting shafts is to take the lightest shaft you can swing reliably. Put a shaft that's too light in and you'll have trouble controlling the clubface. Put a shaft in that's too heavy and you'll sacrifice swing speed and distance. Eric handled the DG S300 just fine, but he also managed the Nippon shaft quite well.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
