Time Machine Backup to Synology NAS Getting Hosed

A TM backup to my Synology NAS finished, albeit 3-4 times slower about a month ago. Then I got the message below. Since I did the backup over the air, gonna try one connected directly to the network by wire. Using AFP. If that doesn't work, will try SMB, then NFS as protocol to map to TM folder. If I can't make this work with TM, one of the main reasons I got the NAS was for TM backup on mirrored RAID, I'm gonna be mad.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

OK, TM backup while connected via wire and using SMB took 3 hours vs 20+ hours wireless AFP. Probably better chance this backup will be good.
