  1. The tax rate in CA in the past was 10% and he didn't move. Is moving to 13% really the breaking point? He was willing to lose 100k/million but not 130k/million? If it mattered to him, he should have moved years ago. I know that was #1 reason I left. When I retired and not making as much (i.e. living off principal) I am looking forward to going back. Year round golf in great weather is awesome. You also have to remember that prize winnings are taxable in the state they are won. Winning pebble beach causes you to pay CA no matter where you live. Most endorsements go to state of residence. And yes the tax code is drastically unfair in that a guy like Mitt can pay 13% while a hard working golfer pays more like 52%(they number that other people have come up for guys making the max rates in CA. I think Phil just added up all the percentages). The top .01% like it that way though. As far as it not working for him, he can stop any time he wants. However it should be pointed out that 38% (use his number) of 60 million is a lot more than 100% of 0. I am not sure about european tax laws but moving to a Tax haven only works for US citizens if you want to renounce citizenship which can get pretty messy.
  2. I am pretty sure I heard the same thing about greg norman. Personally I take it as a bit of joke. Here is a question. Imagine you hit the ball at the exact same spot on the club at the exact same speed, how close together on average do you think it will land? Little things hitting the ball a little different (edge of dimple versus right on), wind, grass friction on launch, roll on land and so on would make me believe that worrying about sub yard accuracy on anything over about 50 yards is a waste of brain cells.

    Driving Distance

I would love to hear why you think LPGA pros don't hit it as far as PGA pros? Why do the senior guys lose distance? And so on. Not to mention why you think pushups have anything to do with the golf swing (i.e they aren't the primary power muscles in the golf swing) and why endurance (doing something 50 times vesus doing something once) is important in a power activity. Is strength the most important thing in distance? Nope. But it is something that you can improve and will lead to more distance.
  4. Would you believe 99% of the replies you get? And that goes for pretty much any of the guys talking about swing speed. That being said, I have though about it (and it is either my number 1 or number 2 program depending on the day). I don't expect 30+mph from any program but 10-15 for someone that hasn't done much speed or specific strength training is likely. The questions is the program pure snake oil (from what I have read/watched the stuff seems solid) or a good collection of the "Standard" training (strength, power, and over/underspeed) for improving your golf swing. I probably would have spend the 50 bucks (if it is total snake oil I will gamble my CC will get me a refund) but the advertisment for the 1 length irons sort of scares me
  5. If you are an college athlete and you don't know the rules about getting compensated for your using your athletic skills, you are an idiot. It sounds great that you should be allowed to teach golf. Should the QB also be allowed to teach? I am sure there are a lot of boosters who have kids that really need lessons..... You can be a mentor to those kids. You just can't be paid. If it is a priority in your life you can do it instead of playing xbox. That being said, I would be fine getting rid of the whole idea of amateurism. Right now the best amateurs are the ones that can live the life as close to a pro as possible. When was the last time a 30 +year old won the US amateur?
  6. Sounds about right. Got fooled, embellished a bit (maybe to seem like not such a loser with an online only relationship), and then was more or less stuck when things unraveled. Why he was looking for that type of relationship is another thing. We can make up a zillion stories about why that happened. All of these social engineering stories seem crazy when you know they are false. When they are happening real time, I am guessing they are a lot harder. You need to read some of the hacker books where they guys talk about how they use social engineering to get supposedly confidential info and the like. The best hackers tend not to exploit the machines. They exploit the people are the machines. Heck I am willing to bet that you could have convinced Manti that he did meet his "GF". Imagine if after the stanford game, he gets a message saying I had fun meeting you at the aftergame party (I assume they had one with the boosters). He meet a zillion people that night and doesn't want to admit he can't remember her. Through in a bit of drinking (i know he is a mormon.) and slightly fuzzy memories and things are off to the races. People like to think of things as the truth and lies. In a lot of cases it is a lot messier. We remember things that didn't happen and forget things that did. Now if he should have come forward ASAP is a different question. I can see going both ways on that one.
  7. Well I don't see them getting a ring unless a) They get by Baltimore AND Atlanta or b)They bet by Baltimore AND SF. I am 100% sure if they don't do one of those 2 things they will not get a ring. I place the odds at about 25%+-10%.
  8. Yeah but most of those were not coin flip games. They were beat downs. In Brady's case he is 2 plays away from being 5-0 and is also 2 plays away from being 1-4. To be fair, I have a theory that if they replayed the superbowls the following week, we would have a different winner 1/3 the time even with the blowout games. I sort of hope the 49er's win. It would be fun to see what either the Pats or the Ravens do given 2 weeks to prepare for the read option. I have a feeling that either team will come up with a game plan to shut it down and it would be up to the 49es to adjust.
  9. That is like saying a Porsche 911 is just a bit more than bmw m5. It is true but it doesn't make either that affordable. Or maybe he was looking at http://store.edelgolf.com/collections/putters/products/limited-edition-damascus-putter . That being said, if there was a place with in an hour of where i live, I probably would own one. After that customization process I would like to think I would worry about if I had the right putter or not.
  10. Your assuming that Tigers (or any guys) goal in life should be to bang as many hot chicks as possible. Maybe he enjoyed having his kids at a younger age. And speaking of Derek Jeter parting gifts: link As far as getting back together, when 2 super rich people marry (and yes after the first marriage she is super rich), a prenup is standard. It is easy to be real cyncal about it but maybe he really does love and miss her and maybe she feels the same. Or maybe they need to spend 3 months together to realize things will never work out. Who knows.
  11. I think it can be a lot more complicated. He could have been chatting with a "girl" remotely thinking they were going to meet. Then she dies. He embellishes it a bit. And then he finds out that she is fake. And now he is stuck with what to do. He goes to ND and they tell him to keep it quiet. In the end I am sure no one is going to come out smelling like roses. I am not sure if any crimes have been committed.
  12. A lot of that is not doing an apples to apples comparison. They play a lot more match play (i.e. you pick up on the green a lot or even from the fairway when you are shooting your 8 and can skip the last holes if the match is over) and the various alternate shot formats from what I have read. The also play less housing development courses and the ball tends not to fly as far (obviously this depends on where in the states you are playing. San Francisco coastal courses can give you the same short shorts). I am sure you could take 4 scots to my private course, give them an empty course and they would struggle to get done in 3:20 walking. The course isn't super long (6300 from the normal tees, 6500 from the tips) but between the hills, lots of OOB and blind landing shots which you have to make sure are clear before teeing off, and the 5 min walk between 5 of the holes( one would probably be closer to 10), it is not a fast course for walkers. 13 min scheduling per hole is crazy. Having only 1 group on the hole at a time is stupid. It might provide the smoothest golf round but very few golfers want to pay 2x as much for that right (although it might be fun to try that. Charge 2.5x as much between 7-12am for the right to have half as many people on the course). On the other hand 6 hour rounds are crazy. It would be fun to see how those rounds come about. If you had the tracking on every cart (assume every group is on carts), is it the course is way over packed or are there just a couple of slow groups that jam everything up? Quote:
  13. The pats have played 5 superbowls under brady. Except for the eagles game (and even that one is close), they were all coin flips. The fact that the won the first two and lost the last 2 doesn't mean much. I expect a good game. That probably means a blowout.
  14. Maybe he met her on an online chat room after the Stanford game and we all assumed that "met" implied in person. Or maybe the reporter changed slighly what was said thinking it didn't make a difference. And then we would have to figure out what he means by a girl friend. Maybe he was just embrassed by having an online penpal. Or maybe he had some master scheme. Smart people do dumb things all the time. Look at the ponzi schemes that suck in rich people all the time. This doesn't say anything about Notre Dame academics (you are crazy if you think the ND football players have the exact same standards as the rest. They might be higher standards than lets say a SEC school but if you take out football a good chunk of them would not get in). This whole thing looks stupid now but maybe at the time it felt believable.

  16. https://www.facebook.com/NDFootball/posts/553537038009180 Should be fun. I sort of give him the benefit of the doubt because really after a dead grandmother, do you really need to add in a dead GF for the story?
  17. Youth hockey is switching to something similiar where they play cross ice rather than full length. And some places have tried 3vs3 or 4vs4(instead of 5vs5) to get each skater more skill development time. To some extend the in golf, it would be the same as playing a par 3 course. You get to practice approach shots, chip shots, and putting. The advantage over full golf (where you add in a driver) is that you should be able to play a lot more holes/hr. You don't face a ton of different situations off the tee compared to the rest of the game. Or you could just say practice time at the range since golf doesn't have the reaction component of most sports. Thing about how many chips you can take in all different situtiation you can take in 30 minsversus how many you get in 18 holes (3+ hours)of golf. You have to be very careful not to get into a this or that frame of mind. Training shouldn't be an OR activity. It should be an AND one. Training slower helps with certain things. Training faster helps with others (i.e. it makes it easier to swing 90mph after you have been working at swinging 100mph). And training as you play helps get you comfortable on the course. Figuring out what you need and when is a bit of an art.
  18. It depends on what you mean by better technique and where you are in the learning curve. Getting rid of some motions can make you more consistant. You could practice the Happy Gilmore swing forever (for an extreme example) and you will never develop consistancy as there is too much motion to time. You will get better with 10k hours of rep but not as much as you will by using a technically more sound swing and practicing. Would Furyk benefit from a switch? Now? Nope. By the time he got in the required practice time he would be on the senior tour. Would he have been better if he had a slightly different swing early on? Maybe. It is easy to say that any changes to a top 25 player is nuts. No one can say if those changes would have made him better or worse. It is easy to hit 50k balls and be roughly in the same spot you started if all you did was spend a bunch of hours ingraining that OTT move and flip. On the other hand you can spend a lot of hours making tweaks that don't really change much. Quote:
  19. Depends what you mean by minimal. Studies have shown yoga giving ~2-5mph over a 12 week program. That is either really nice 10 yard improvement or a minimal one compared to a 30+mph one. I think part of it that people. My experience with stretching (not so much yoga) is that when I did it religiously ever night, I got a lot better over 10 weeks but after that I sort of plateaued. For example I was able to go from barely able to touch the floor with my finger tips to be almost able to palm the floor but I wasn't able to get to the point where it wasn't a major stretch. I sort of question anyone claiming to swing 140mph with something like a normal golf swing. The number of guys that swing that fast with
  20. I am wondering how many years until one of internet "I am going to be a pro" guys actually makes. I figure it is bound to happen eventually. I must admit though anyone that posts on messages boards rather than work on their game has questionable priorities. Only 200 students were invited to play? How many of them will turn into PGA tour pros? Maybe 5 at best. Even when you make it to an elite level, few make it to the top. On the tour you are playing with the top high school players from the past 20 years (+euro players). It is scary to think how many NCAA champions, US amateur champs and other guys with high level wins don't come close to making it on the tour. Keep on practicing and enjoy the ride.
  21. What was the weight of your old driver? It looks like you are getting slightly better contact numbers but also another 3 or so miles of clubhead speed. I am wondering if that is aerodynamics or just a ligher club?
  22. How far did the stock R11 blur fly versus the aftermarket one? That is the number that matters. The posts I have seen with direct comparisons show little to no difference (i.e. some guys hit the made for better some hit the real). The only guys that I have seen that really benefit from the "Real" are the high swing speed guys. I am guessing the manufactors really wimp out their X+ shafts for ego reasons. Personally i think the systems works out well. Most guys get to buy "tour name" shafts are reasonable prices and the manufactors still get to overcharge for shafts to suck money out of the guys that are willing to pay a couple hundred bucks for "tour quality". Seems like a win-win situation.
  23. There is nothing special about 8'. At that point your stroked gained would be ~.5 (i.e. you will birdie instead of par) but there is nothing magical about .5. At 12 ft it might be .3 and at 20' maybe .1. If you had all 18 shots land 20' from the hole, you would likely end up 1-3 under most days. Most people would take that. The most common result of a 15' and a 30' shot is the same (2 putt) but the reality is that if you compare the distribution of shots that lead to a 15' versus 30' one, you will see a lot more birdies with the 15' and less with the 30'. 24. To be fair to the BCS computers, they are not allowed to use several pieces of information that humans have. Given no other info, is it better to be 12-1 with a loss by 1 pt to Al or 12-1 with a 1 pt loss to A&M.; Seems a lot closer when you look at it that way. Now imagine you don't know that one team struggled to beat a crappy team in overtime. If we gave the computers decent inputs they values they spat out would be better. It would be interesting to see the records of the computers (i.e. take the computer rankings) versus the humans (ap or whatever poll you prefer) and see what one does better at predicating bowl games. I bet the results are really close.
  25. The whole idea that 7'11 is some magical number is flawed and the idea if you leave your approach shot at 12' that it didn't matter what you drive was is idiotic. Driving sets up the rest of the hole. You can still screw it up with bad shots later but without a good drive it is hard to score. For example take a 400 yard par 4. If you drive it 300, you have a 100 yard approach shot. Drive it 250, you have a 150 yard approach shot. Drive it 200, you have 200 yard one. Which one do you think has the best opportunity to a) hit the green in regulation and b) have a makeable putt? Is it easier for the 3rd player to pick up 50 yards (maybe. If he is like a 30 year old with bad contact and slice is easy. If he is 70, not so much) or to get the ability to hit an approach shot (which will be 20+ yards short of the green), a short game shot, and then one putt? The 250 versus 300 case is a bit more interesting. Is it easier to improve accuracy from 150 (you will never consistantly leave it with in 20ft but you will get a good chunk with in that range) or add in a bunch of yards off the tee? Depends a lot on the player. If you are hitting the ball straight with good contact, getting more distance probably will not change your game as you will struggle to pick up 30+ yards unless you have a really poorly fitting club or your AOA is really negative. For the guy that slices and has poor contact, picking up 30+ yards is possible and can really change your game.
