With your current grip, it's going to be hard to get very good. It might work for you right now, but overall, if you want to truly get better, you need a more conventional grip.

How good are you? Just look at your face...

That's what I tell people that I help. I show them my irons and tell them to look at their's, so they see the difference. The better you get the more precise you should hit the ball, which leads to a tighter distance control. I know guys who can hit a wedge anywhere from 100-150 yards, depending on how well they catch the ball. That's a huge margin. Where I know my gap is a lot tighter. -
He has the steel shafts on the irons, and graphite on the hybrids. I think this combination works best for him.

My son hit his new irons tonight and really liked them. I was on hand to help him, as needed. He has been struggling with hitting a fairway wood or even a hybrid off the deck. With these new Nickent hybrids, he was striping it. He gained a new confidence today that I have been waiting for him to get. With the new irons, when he caught it solid, it was jumping off the club. I hit a couple of his irons ( 6 & 8 ) and both clubs felt very solid. I'm a Titleist guy, but I was impressed with the ease of hitting these clubs.

I sometimes go months without playing. It drives some of my golf buddies crazy that I go that long without playing and still keep it going. They're afraid to go over a week without playing because they think they'll lose their edge.

It sounds like you were either standing too close to the ball or lunging toward the ball on your downswing.

I just bought a set of these for my son, who is starting High School this year. I'm hoping they will help his ball striking. We just received them today, so I'll let you know more after he has had a chance to hit them. I will say I like the look of them, and they set up very nice.

I started playing back in the 70's before all the high-tech equipment came out. My first set was a Northwestern Chi Chi Rodriquez set from K-Mart. There was nothing special about the set, but I learned to shoot in the 70's within two years with those clubs. I know there are advantages with the newer equipment, but one thing those clubs taught me was to hit the ball pure. With the little club face back then, I was forced to work on my swing if I wanted to hit the ball solid. With a lot of the newer equipment there's less of a need to be precise on where you strike the ball. You can get away with mis-hits that you wouldn't have been able to with the older clubs.

For me, it would be Augusta National. I've been there three times to watch the Masters, and I know I wouldn't get tired of the beauty.

My dad was a scratch golfer when I was growing up. It took me a few years to finally beat him. The day I beat him, he gave me a minature trophey that meant a lot to me. He passed away a few years ago, but I still have that trophey.

I had an experience kind of like that back when I was sixteen. My Dad & I started a round at a local golf course, and I birdied the first four holes. I parred the fifth hole, and before we could start the sixth hole, it started to rain. We waited for over an hour while the rain continued. We ended up walking in, and I always wondered what I would have shot that day. But remember, there will be other days.

That's not good news for Tiger or the Tour. The Ryder Cup is looking bleak for the Americans, as well.

I don't play with them anymore, but I still have 5-6 persimmon drivers. I have some Toney Pennas, Jack Nicklaus MacGregors, and a Ben Crenshaw Cleveland driver. They still look sweet.

I would think Steve Stricker is high on the list.

I wouldn't worry about your speed. Concern yourself with where the ball is going. It doesn't do you any good to have a fast clubhead speed, if you can't control the ball. If you watch most pros, you'll notice they don't go after their irons as hard as their woods. There's a reason for that. I played against a guy in college who was 30-40 yards shorter than most everyone else, but man could he hit it straight.

I agree with Erik on this. I didn't see the video, but I've seen players who struggle with this. It's all about timing, if you're opening too early, it throws off your timing.
-
Don't forget about chipping. You're going to save more shots around the green than anywhere else. So I would suggest putting more time in on chipping, putting and pitching. I think that's where the average player would see strokes come off, if they would work on it.

I still have quite a few of my old Persimmon Drivers. A few old Toney Pennas, a couple of MacGregor Jack Nicklaus, and a Cleveland Ben Crenshaw model. They sure are pretty.

My lowest round is 62 (-8), but it was a pretty easy course. My best round was a 66 (-6) on a tough golf course. I've also had numerous 65's on various courses. One of the weirdest rounds I had was at Pecan Valley in San Antonio, Texas. They use to hold a PGA event on it years ago. The first time I played it, I was playing with two of my buddies. After nine holes, I was -5 and made the mistake of going into the clubhouse. One of my buddies asked the guy behind the counter what the course record was. The guy says" 7 under". Of course, that got me thinking about the score instead of just playing. Needless to say, I ended up shooting 5 over on the back. It was good lesson to learn.

I use to keep track of all the courses I had played. The last count was over 100 courses covering over 30 states. I've always enjoyed playing new courses.

I've done 63 holes in one day, but that was back in the late 70's. There wasn't near as many people playing, so my parents would drop me off in the morning, and pick me up after work. My dad played 72 holes in one day, and I was always trying to match that but never did.

Sounds like a part of "Bagger Vance", when Will Smith tells Matt Damon to watch Bobby Jones, and how he responds.

It's my favorite tournament. It's my favorite golf course. Something about walking down 10 fairway and then on to Amen Corner. What a beautiful place !

My only knock on him is his GD bombs that he lets fly when he gets upset.

My first thought was Ben Crenshaw because he's always been my favorite golfer. He truly has a passion for the game of golf. But of the players of today's tour, I would like to see Steve Stricker win. I like his demeanor.
