This has been my "bug-a-boo" for quite a while, and I have been working on my pitching constantly... A pitch (high lofted soft landing) shot is your "normal" swing in miniature. Your hips could be a little open to allow your hands a place to swing through, you should always accelerate through the shot, and finish with your hands high, looking at your target. What I have found that everyone does NOT tell you is that you have to quickly (exaggerate) your wrist cock. You are executing a "small swing" but you still have to get your wrists cocked, in a SMALL AMOUNT of time. You may only take 1/4 of a back swing (maybe get your hands to 9:00) but you still have to have your wrists cocked in order to execute an athletic (small) golf swing. You want to make a swing and hit down on the ball, NOT take some kind of a scoop! That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!!

Obviously, your swing path is ok, but your club face is WIDE open! Your hands are TOO FAR FORWARD in the hitting zone, AND (possibly) the ball is too far back in your stance, AND/OR you are SWAYING (forward) out in front of the ball. You definitely have to release your hands, but get your fundamentals correct first (alignment, ball position, HAND position), and then work on releasing the club SLIGHTLY before the bottom of the swing. Release too soon and to quick, and you'll HOOK IT... Good Luck... -

If I can still see grass I will play... But, when the snow finally takes over, in all honesty, I do nothing. I don't even touch a club, more times than not, I have found that taking a break, is the best thing you can do... Ask Bruce Litsky... His caddy once left a banana in Bruces golf bag at the end of the PGA tour season, and when Bruce showed up for the beginning of the next season, the banana was still in there (YUK), which proves Bruce's claim that he did not practice at all during the off season. Bruce has played pretty well through out his entire career, maybe there is something to taking a break in the winter????

I use a "heavier" Stiff Graphite shaft. If you are built like Stadler (big and strong), you definitely want a heavier driver shaft... I really like the Grafalloy shafts. Get yourself a "Golfworks" catalog and/or check out their web site. There are a Zillion shafts out there, and experimenting can be fun (and expensive). Also, I think you need a little more loft on your driver, more loft = more carry = more distance... Good luck!!! -
Tin Cup's swing thought was "Dollar Bills", I use it some times... But I have to say, the BEST single swing tought I have that works time after time is: "Swing Like a Girl".... This in NO WAY is a knock against women, I think MANY men would learn a LOT from watching the women play golf on TV or in person! Women (for the most part) do not have that "Pee Pee Envy" thing that we men have (about EVERYTHING!).... I find that I hit my longest and best shots when I DO NOT try to KILL the ball! Help your game... watch a girl play golf!!!

I have played a couple of rounds (and a company scramble) with my wife. She liked it, and I like it too! She took some lessons with one of the sister-in-laws, and it worked out pretty good. She just doesn't have much time for golf, as we still have kids in High School, and "taking care" of the kids has higher priority than mom and dad golfing. Some day though, she will run out of excuses and/or distractions. Also, my wife does NOT do pink! I got a new set of clubs for my wife... GOOD trade huh?

In my "handicap" golf league, we NEED those hole handicaps, because that is how we know who gives and gets strokes on each hole. What I don't understand is why I have to give a higher handicap person a stroke (and sometimes 2) on the hardest hole on the course!?!?! It's the HARDEST hole, shouldn't I get a stroke TOO!?!??

They are definitely an iron replacement, and should be swung like an iron. Are your hybrids part of your set? or were they purchased separately? Compare the length of your 5 iron with your 3 and 4 hybrids... the 4 should be a little longer (about 1/2 an inch) than your 5 iron, and the 3 should be a little longer than your 4 (about 1/2 an inch). Also, do all the shaft material, weight, and flex match? Hybrids that are too light or too heavy will throw you off. I know from my experience, I topped the heck out of my hybrid the first few times I played with it. It looks like a wood, and your brain makes you do a "wood" swing... which is wrong, because the hybrid is shorted than your woods. Play the ball a "little" forward.... (Like Harvey Penick use to say... "this is a ONE aspirin fix... don't take the whole bottle") and hit down on the ball like you would with an iron. I think getting a 3/4 iron just to experiment is a waste of money and time, 3 and 4 irons are way harder to hit than your hybrids. Just keep at it, DON'T TRY TO HELP THE BALL INTO THE AIR.... hit DOWN on it!

How do you practice your putting without being on a putting green?
TommyD69 replied to jfrain2004's topic in Golf Talk
So, THAT is the SAME on your side of the pond also????? I thought EVERYONE in Ireland played golf... Men and women.... I guess WE are not so different... huh? -
I have seen hole handicaps assigned strictly by yardage at some courses. The longest hole is assigned the #1 and the shortest #18. Keep in mind though, that the 1st hardest hole and the 2nd hardest hole USUALLY are NOT on the same nine.
-
The first thing for me is "Swing Hard... In case you hit it"... But the most important thing is your SHORT GAME... Any (long drive) non golfer can hit the ball a mile, but only a real golfer can get up and down from a down hill lie, over a bunker to a "short" pin... that's where you need to spend MOST of your practice time IMHO.....

How do you practice your putting without being on a putting green?

When we finished our basement, I was very involved in the carpet we purchased. We got a wonderful "tight" carpet that rolls about 12 on the stimp meter. Plus, the way the basement floor "slopes" towards the drains, I have a little break depending on which direction I am putting. I bought a practice putting hole (It's just a flat green piece of plastic that is VERY thin at the front and raises slightly towards the back) that I place against the bottom basement step, so it won't move, and a missed putt will bounce off the step and not roll away. Just work on your consistent stroke, and hitting where you are looking. I also lay two clubs down on the carpet, a little wider than my putter head, aimed at the practice putting cup, so that you have a three foot putting guide. This works really well for me indoors AND out. Good Luck! -
There was 2 to 8 inches of snow here is Cleveland, depending on which side of town you live on. Once the snow starts, I switch from my pro bag, to my lite carry bag... Cart path only rules in the winter forces you to walk more than if you just carry your bag. So, I tip toed thru the goose crap this past weekend, because the Lake Erie snow machine stopped just long enough for the decent temps to allow all the snow to melt (here on the West side) and I got a round of golf in... To He11 with a white Christmas, I wanna play golf!!!

Will I play in the 20's??? I hope so.... that's only 12 years away... I won't be that old!!!! I've played when it was 29 degrees (F) here is Cleve-burg, and I'm sure (if there is NO snow on the ground), I will do it again!!!! Gladly!!!!

Do you think that annika will ever make a comeback?
TommyD69 replied to Wisconsin Golfer's topic in Golf Talk
Nope.... No reason to.... Maybe a celeb thing for skins game or something like that, but to come back on the regular tour... I don't think so.... -
My golf league plays the tees closest to 6300 yards. A lot of guys (mostly the more "seasoned" players) think that is a little long... I think a course over 6800 yards is starting to get a "little long", but I welcome the challenge!!!
