  1. I'd like to add one other thing. The ability to just bend down, pick up your tee, and walk to your bag after you know you crushed one dead center and you don't need to watch it, because it'll be right where you intended.
  2. I have been a big pro-dress code guy, but I have to agree with Mgoofy24.... And I don't think shorts were discussed as not being allowed. It's what kind of shorts, how are they word, etc... I wear shorts almost all the time from late May to late August here in the northeast. They're cargo shorts too. But, I also wear a decent shirt and it's tucked and I have a belt and I basically look squared away. I'm a big believer in looking like you belong, where ever that may be. Bottom line is this, when I'm on the golf course, I like to be in an environment where I feel like I'm ON A GOLF COURSE. I also play softball and go to the gym, but when I'm doing either of those things, I don't have khakis and a polo shirt on. And, again, some people fail to understand my point about sizing people up before the first tee, but I'm a pretty good judge of character, and yeah, I do take into account what people are wearing and if it's a public course and they wanna wear their tee shirt and jeans I don't have to play with them.
  3. The feeling you get after splitting a fairway past all your playing partners, and the easy, long walk to the ball, all while knowing you don't have to look for it or think about a creative way to get on the green.
  4. The 475 yard par 5 17th at my local course. Hit my second shot about 30 yards short and right, under a tree and directly behind a bunker. Took a 7 iron, and punched / chipped one over the bunker, under the tree limbs, and onto the left side of the green, where it stuck and fed back towards the pin slightly. Though I missed the birdie, I parred the hole and it was a creative GIR.
  5. How many Steve Jobs are out there? I just want to know if you can truthfully say to yourself that you NEVER infer a single thing upon meeting someone based on their appearance to you. That may change as you get to know someone, but initially, we all do it.
  6. Agreed to the above, and again, it IS relative. Another poster mentioned that his parents are building a 300K home outside Madison WI. 300K where I come from gets you a one bedroom apartment that needs renovations.
  7. Where did we get into racial slurs? And, sadly, the way you dress--anywhere--does say something about you to others, and we want it to say something about us. Do you think punks, Goths, hip hop fans dress the way they do to NOT say something about themselves? Fashion lets us talk without words and it does play into one's first impression and it does matter. If you own a company, and you have a chance to hire one of two people, and their education, demeanor, background are equal, but one dresses like every day is casual Friday and the other is the suit and tie, first impression type, you will absolutely hire the better appearing one. It's a fact.
  8. That's kind of my point. Money is relative. Is 100K alot to a kid who's family had enough money to provide him with lessons from a young age, and allow him to play what is probably one of the two most expensive sports to play consistently (hockey in this area would be the other, IMHO)? 100K IS alot to me, but I come from a pricey part of the country and come from a single parent household, but even then it's not what I would like to have to provide for kids, if my wife and I wanted to have any. I'm saying I don't think there are a ton of guys on any professional tour who aren't from a rather comfortable upbringing in a decent part of the country, so 100K to them might not be what it is to you and me. However, that brings up an interesting second thought, maybe that's what allows them to play the secondary tours and scratch by until they get that one big pay day that sets them up for a few years.
  9. She's incredibly talented. She can crush the ball. She just can't make a cut in a men's event. And, to be fair, she hasn't been too consistent in making cuts in women's events either. Ask the guys in the field at Reno if they appreciate Wie's presence.
  10. No, because likely those 8 or 9 guys she beat have qualified for events through traditional means, and not been given repeated sponser exemptions after showing she should just compete in her own gender's league. IF she showed some ridiculous skill level there, and won consistently, I could see her trying it out again down the line against the men. Annika, the best female golfer in the last ten years (IMHO), played against the men, what, once? Twice? And she won seven majors. Wie hasn't won a thing yet her entourage thinks she should be playing against men? Huh?
  11. Come to NYC, see what the low six figures gets you. And I do about 50-60 hours overtime a month to hit that mark.
  12. With Annika retiring and no other female golfer ready to compete with Lorena on a week in, week out basis, this is the perfect time for Wie's handlers to put her full time on the LPGA tour. I could care less about her finishing nine shots over the cut line on a weak men's field, but I'd watch her try to win against an elite LPGA field. She's still young enough where her story could have a happy ending, but she hasn't won a thing since the pub links. Anything. Anywhere. And they keep trotting out the tired dog and pony show against low quality men's fields and she keeps getting spanked.
  13. Mahan would fit right in on Cap'n Azinger's Foot In Our Mouth's Team. Zinger had a few kids throw some rocks at him along a jogging trail in Westchester during one of his first tournaments after he beat cancer and said to the press something to the extent of, "what do you expect from people in NY?" He's been off my Christmas list since then.
  14. I have a TM 19* Rescue Burner and love it. It's great off the tee for my short home course, and I have hit it out of the rough, and on the extremely rare occasion, it even faded or drew as I set up for.
  15. I write the names of those I've killed in battle. Is this weird?
  16. I played my last round with two Bridgestone E6+ balls, and was very happy with the performance. 24.99 at my pro shop for a dozen.
  17. I bought Cobra FP II's this year after advice on this forum and hitting about five different sets. The range you mention is the same as mine was, and I hit the following irons: Cobra FP II Ping G10 Callaway X-20 TM RAC OS Titleist AP I (or II's, whichever is for the higher handicapper) The Cobra's worked great for me, and after about ten to twelve rounds with them, I can say they offer a high ball flight, they stop well, and don't appear too fat from address. Good luck.
  18. I've decided, after getting back into golf this year and posting about 25 rounds, most of which were at my local muni, that I have gotten to the point where, when I go out alone, I will decline to go out with certain golfers. And yes, I'll make those judgements based on what I see at the starter's booth. Three guys who're loud and wearing workout shorts and tee's and what not? I'll pass. The older couple with more ball retrievers than clubs? No thanks. ANYONE who doesn't stop talking or moving while the group on the tee is hitting? Not with me. And guess what, most of my judgements, based on a small amount of information will be spot on. That comes from playing many rounds this year with many different partners and I can say I want to play with people who enjoy the game and want to get better. Conversely, I will not mind at all playing with high school and college age kids who may be just picking the game up and will ask questions. It's not about not wanting to help someone, it's about helping those who want to be helped, and not preaching to those who don't. And since it's a public course, I'll pass on playing with those who don't.
  19. Dude, I play the same muni's you likely play, and I would LOVE to pass on some golf wisdom to someone else after it was passed onto me. The problem is the golfer that's described in the beginning of this thread doesn't likely want anyone to tell him anything about the game. We all have seen golf on TV, we know what's worn, but do you think the guy that is wearing the basketball shorts and tank top gives a crap about walking in your line? Replacing a divot? Fixing a pitch mark? It's all about how we present ourselves. I am not a good golfer but I look like I belong, I try to observe what the better players do, I remember the good, try to forget the bad, and let's be serious, this is the age of the internet, you can learn the basics of damned near anything with a Google search. On top of that, the guy dressed like that is usually indignant of golf to begin with. He looks like crap, plays like crap, and then proceeds to tell his buddies how this isn't his game anyway, he's more into baseball and football.
  20. The "knowing the game" aspects of the argument hold a great deal of weight. You wouldn't walk onto an asphalt basketball court in NYC and not know the basics of the game: winners vs. losers outs, when NOT to call a foul, win by two, etc... You'd be laughed off the court by the regulars. So how is golf exclusive when you expect people to act the part and know the basics of the game? It's no more exclusive then expecting someone to know the infield fly rule or one foot vs. two feet in bounds.
  21. Okay, not sure where this should be, forum wise, but I was curious how one exactly goes about applying to a private club. My wife is amazing enough (and makes enough money, owning her own company) to want to go around and check out a few Westchester County private clubs, mainly for her to relax and tune out and for me to golf. Now, being a cop, I obviously can't afford this on my own and don't have any connections to recommend me, if that's a necessity. She makes the real money, and told me to try to find a few places to apply. Now I realize in this part of the country, memberships can run $50,000 (No, she doesn't make THAT much money). So I really have two questions: 1. How do you walk into a club and inquire about membership options, and 2. Does anyone know the start up and yearly costs of some clubs in the lower Westchester, NY area? As always, appreciate any responses.
  22. The water is right in front of you. Plateaued tee, have to carry about 120-170 yards (depending on where on the dog leg right you want to land it. I plunked my first about 50 yards straight down. The second was a good drive, dead center, 130ish to the green. And the first situation I mentioned is somewhat like the photo you posted. There's 270 to carry a stream, before that is a strip of rough, and before that, fairway. I'm not carrying the stream, so a 3 wood went about 7 yards too far, otherwise it was right center. Thanks for the response.
  23. This is for the golfers, who, like me, take quite a few loops by yourselves, and you get matched up at the first tee with the odd twosome, or threesome. I love going out as often as my schedule allows me, and that often means without my friends, who sometimes work conflicting hours. I've found lately that my round is GREATLY affected by who I go out with. Today, for instance, went out with a 62 year old attorney who I never met before, but is VERY into the game. I shot well (for me), and finished with a 95. We had a blast walking the course and just approaching the game as golfers, discussing shot options, putting lines, etc... About two weeks ago, I get matched up with three seniors (and I have a HUGE soft spot for older folks), and it was a nightmare. They consistently drove the cart to the EDGE OF THE GREEN. ON EVERY HOLE. Never marked a ball, always stood right behind their ball, even when I was putting. And, although I know this makes me the a***ole, the elder of the three couldn't swing above hip level, making every shot an exaggerated chip, yet he still played the same tees as everyone else. I mean, God bless him for being able to do this at his age (seventy plus), but when you're hitting 8 from 100 yards out on a 475 yard par five, you need to think about using the seniors tees. Shot a 107 that day. I've found this to be pretty consistent on the rounds I play without my friends. Get paired up with people who want to get better and work at it, and I play better. Get paired up with golfers even worse than I, or are inconsiderate jerks, and I play poorly. Anyone else experiencing this?
  24. Pretty satisfied with my driving lately, no matter if it's the driver, 3 wood, or 3 hybrid. VERY unsatisfied with my putting. 18 on the front today, 22 on the back with 3 three putts.
  25. The Rocco Effect radiates throughout all of Golfdom.
