  1. Sure, it means smaller groups are going to have to wait a bit, but anyone with any sense should know that before they get to the tee box. If it's just you and your buddy, the parking lot ought to tell you the story. To me, the worst is when you have a sudden pace change in the middle of the round. My old, ranger-less, starter-less, home course used to have yahoos start off the back no matter how busy the course was. Nobody was there to stop them. That 1:30 front nine gets followed by a 3:00 back nine. Kind of wondered how many of those idiots even paid to start with. That's not something that would happen at my new home course. Consistency is nearly as important as sheer time. With a bit of maturity, I've found that I can adjust myself to the pace if I know what to expect.
  2. In the order asked: 1. The procedure is to send $75 cash to a particular PO Box in Troy, OH (don't have it off hand) with a stamped, self-addressed envelope. We'll send you back an Ohio Pass good for one month from the date of issuance. 2. No particular shots are required. Just be mindful of what water sources you drink from. Some are better than others. 3. We make use of the entire road. It's the "I was here first" theory of driving. Hope you have a nice visit.
  3. No pants huh? Well you could just try a layer or two of pantyhose. Don't get to hung up on masculinity, even some football players of note make use.
  4. About the only real solace I can take from the whole thing is that at least it wasn't another SEC or Clemson national championship and It shows on a level that Ohio State wasn't that far off the mark. They gave TTUN a game. The Blue Boys are going to be very loud this year.
  5. Given the limitations of my golf game in general, my wide-open and friendly home course never sounds like a bad idea. Practically, family obligations have me fairly tied to the Miami Valley. There are probably only a few public courses left around here that I haven't played at least once.
  6. A comprehensive list of only the private courses isn't something that is readily available. The USGA will show you every course in each state that carries a course rating. You could then determine for yourself if that is a public or private course. The local associations' web sites will list out their member courses and might indicate if they are public or private. The Northern Ohio Golf Association has lists for both their publics and privates. My local Miami Valley Golf Association does not list them separately. Other than that, there is the usual assortment of pages that will rate the best courses in each state like what some of the others have posted links to.

Former top NHL pick, infamous draft 'bust' Alexandre Daigle to be subject of new film In a lot of ways, the Daigle saga transformed the rules and structure surrounding the NHL draft and rookie contracts. Happened to see this as I was rolling through the news this morning. Always sort of amusing how much certainty people seem to have that a top draft pick is going to be the next legend. See it in both my favorite sports, hockey and football. What I had forgotten is that Daigle actually had a half decent career by any normal standard. 616 games and 327 points would have been just fine for nearly anyone else.

As hard as it is to admit that anyone playing for a Pittsburgh sports organization isn't evil incarnate, I'll have to give Crosby his credit. In his 19th year and he's over a point-per-game so far;. Everything I've heard says he's a pretty good guy to.
  9. You mean like this guy? 😆
  10. Well, I agree with the desire to have golf maintain a high level of respect for one's opponent at any rate. Standards for things like decorum and sportsmanship constantly change. They evolve or devolve depending on your point of view. It is as inevitable for golf as it is any other facet of human existence. The business of shooting the imaginary arrow into the sky certainly does seem like quite the display for the golf course. I'd imagine that if you put a Tiger Woods-style fist pump on display in the 50s or 60s the reaction would have been at least similar. I wonder if that kid's opponent thought anything about it at all.

No. And they have changed things quite a lot over the last 20 years or so. The rules governing targeting are largely a good and necessary thing, but the enforcement of those rules does necessarily require very fine judgements in a sport where tackling a player to the ground is a necessary part of it. Heck, I remember when they put out the NFL's Greatest Hits videos when I was a kid. Makes one cringe to think that damage some of those guys took when they were on the wrong end of them. Things do change. At the same time, collisions and the risk of injury that comes with it are part of the game. It wouldn't really be football without them. So there is a lot of gray area with some of these plays. Specifically to the play in question, I'm not sure what that defender is supposed to do. Minshew throws a ball that requires Pittman to dive in the direction of the defender to make the catch. Naturally the defender is trying to make a play to break up that pass. In the fractions of a second the guy reacts. It is silly to say that Kazee was intending to hit Pittman in the head. It was an unfortune combination of timing and angles. Do you really expect the safety to stand aside in that situation?

Ok. Maybe we are kind of playing games with the phrase "major component", but American football is absolutely a collision sport. @Beastie called it "a major part of the attraction". You can appreciate a lot of various aspects of the sport as you will, but heavy physical contact is an inherent part of the game and always has been. It is really impossible to separate it and still have any trace of the game we know.

Not only that. They suspended him for the rest of the season. I guess there is a track record on him. Guy is appealing it. As a clumsy oaf that used to try to play hockey, I'm not sure what you wanted the man to do there. @iacas's quote from Mike Mitchell sums it up pretty well. The player was trying to make a play as he had been taught and it, unfortunately, turned out bad. Seen dozens of similar things in hockey where a guy intends to make a clean hit and things go wrong in fractions of a second. The leagues are wise to try to protect players from serious injury, but there is always going to be these difficulties when games are inherently built on hard physical contact.
  14. Let's not forget that it gave an entire generation an opportunity to learn the definition of cleeks.
  15. Is it really though? Surely it sucks for pro golf fans to watch these guys sign with LIV, but if spending all this money is purely sportswashing, is it really producing results? Rahm takes his money and plays on the has-been team circuit. May as well of retired and taken up shuffleboard. It's big news in the golf world, but did anyone else even notice? I guess it is hard to quantify whether people's attitudes toward Saudi Arabia have actually softened. I'm not really seeing it here.
  16. The real mind-blowing thing is they way the Saudis are absolutely setting money on fire here. It's one thing when markets exist to pay athletes these amounts. This is different. I know the whole deal was never really about making money, but I'd be a bit upset if I were a citizen of Saudi Arabia. Three-years worth of John Rahm could have helped accomplish a lot of the nonsense that PIF puts on its webpage.
  17. And how long is that going to take? I'm not getting any younger. Guess I'll move up to the ladies tees so my 220-yard monster has a chance to reach the green in two. These guys are so worried about pro golf. Who do they think watches pro golf to start with? Never watched a minute until I started trying to play the game myself. Better be cautious with how they do this. If too many amateurs get frustrated, I think their ratings take a hit.
  18. So Rory says "It will make no difference what-so-ever to the average golfer." Can that possibly be true or is it more a matter that he doesn't care what it does to the average golfer? What distance I do manage to hit the ball wasn't easily obtained. Have no interest in going back to hitting woods on the second shot of par-4 holes.
  19. Based on what the committee is supposed to consider, I think they got it right, but just about everyone ought to feel badly for Florida State at the same time. It was always an inherently flawed system when voting instead of direct on-field results determine these kind of things. They expand the field next year, but we'll have the same subjectivity just at a different level. It was always my thought that college football should try to establish a tournament of conference champions. Obviously, some conferences are much stronger than others, but it would give a concrete path based on wins and losses. Those few schools that insist on being independent can either get with the program or not participate.
  20. I take the losses to TTUN far harder than any allegedly grown adult should and, only now, feel like thinking about it. Nobody other than the lunatic fringe Herbstreit was talking about earlier this season is really serious about firing Day at this point. Take away TTUN and the program is a roaring success in just about every other way. Nearly every year the Buckeyes are in the top 5 in recruiting classes. He has a 56-7 record. If we can be a little realistic about it, you do have to acknowledge how much stronger that TTUN program is now than at anytime since Lloyd Carr. Hard for me to imagine that OSU is in a better position next year with a new head coach. Still make no mistake. That ice is getting thin. Patience has never been a strong point in Columbus and particularly not when it relates to The Game. It may only take one or two big problems to sink him. Could be anything from another L to TTUN to some sort of scandal that does it.
  21. I'd say a solid five seconds anyway. Actually, thinking back on it, it was probably no more than a second and a half. It just felt like five. I hadn't even started walking toward the hole when it went in.
  22. I don't think there is a large difference between walking and riding in general, but Cart Path Only is a pretty obnoxious phrase. I'll usually look to avoid courses where you have to ride CPO. Club selection is usually the least of it. A hacker, like me, might pull one, have to park the cart on the other side of the fairway, grab two or three clubs and march back and forth. All of which takes time and adds to the overall frustration of hitting a bad shot. Worse if you know someone is waiting behind you. Whenever the course is conducive to walking, I walk with my trolley. Not only does it save money, but it lets me walk straight to my ball. When taking a cart down a path, it is easy for me to lose where I am in relation to where the ball ended up, so I lose fewer balls that way. It also helps me flush out some of the disappointment I might be feeling over a bad shot and be more ready for the next one.
  23. Obviously there are some minor rule differences. I can appreciate someone being a bit turned off just due to how top-heavy it normally is. It's still football.
  24. The old saying goes "You aren't trying if you aren't cheating." Probably just about every program in the country makes some sort of effort to pick up the other team's signs. Maybe TTUN got a little more elaborate here. It's also very much on each program to be constantly guarding against this kind of thing. At a minimum, you are regularly changing things. I think we've all seen games where you can tell the defense knows exactly what's coming.
  25. Saw this a while back and mulled it over a little. I'll go with the speed. Seems to me that if I'm in my right mind, taking time with my read and lining up carefully, I'm usually putting the ball at least close to the right line. But getting the speed right seems like a lot more guess work. Just thinking about the disaster misses. Most of them are speed related. That slippery-looking putt that finds it's way down the slope and right off the green? Can't be much worse than digging the chipper out of the bag after one of those.
