Ask for the clubs' serial number before you buy, and confirm with the manufacturer that they're legit. (At least I know Ping will do it over the phone--I found a crazy cheap set of Raptures at Play It Again Sports and did just that.) 3Balls.com is great, I've bought from them a few times.

Something tells me he wasn't having the best round: Galt vice principal allegedly attacks man with golf club By David Ruiz druiz@sacbee.com Published: Friday, Jul. 20, 2012 - 12:00 am | Page 2B Galt High School vice principal Robert E. Rappleye Jr., 61, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon July 13, Angels Camp police officials said. The vice principal's alleged weapon of choice? A golf club. Rappleye, an Elk Grove resident, and others went golfing that day at the Greenhorn Creek Golf Resort in Angels Camp. Rappleye became frustrated at the slow pace of a group of golfers playing ahead on the 18th hole, according to a police news release. A husband and wife in the group ahead approached Rappleye to talk about the problem. Witnesses say the husband became angry when Rappleye used foul language directed to the husband's wife, according to the release. The argument turned violent when Rappleye swung one of his golf clubs at the husband, the news release said. The husband tried to block the swing with his left arm, injuring him. Rappleye swung a second time with the husband turning his back to defend himself. Rappleye struck the husband's left shoulder blade, the news release said. Audrey Kilpatrick, chief business official for Galt Joint Union High School District, said the district has cooperated with the police investigation. She would not say whether Rappleye is on leave, but she confirmed he is currently considered an employee for the district. Officer Chris Johnson of Angels Camp Police Department arrived at the golf course to find the two men still arguing. The victim was bleeding when Johnson arrived, the news release said. The victim pointed out Rappleye as the man responsible for his injuries. Rappleye admitted the attack, the news release said. Rappleye was arrested on scene and taken to the Calaveras County jail. I'm friends with a guy who's played with Spencer and confirmed he's a jerk. (But I try to give guys the benefit of the doubt unless they're jerks to me personally.) I guess my nightmare would be paying $20K to play with a pro and have it being someone who was just having a cup of coffee in the PGA. "Who??"

Synchronizer Peddled by Brandel Chamblee

Saw a guy at the range with one of these. The concept is fine, but $40?! I just made one on my own with a yardstick and large binder clip. -
Usually it would be more like driver-7i-sw (unless I mi-hit my driver, in which case it could be driver-4h-sw). I did have a situation a few weeks ago where I had to go wedge-wedge, but that was because of a green protected by water around the front right and bunkers back left. (I'm hitting my long irons better since then, so now I would probably go for it.)

What I've gotten smarter about lately is laying up. Rather that going for the green from 220 yards out (hoping for a perfect shot but likely leaving myself a tough next shot) I've been trying to lay up to leave myself an easy full wedge onto the green. I still can't bring myself to leave the driver in the bag on most par 4s and 5s though. Seems like every time I do that, I mis-hit my 3-wood anyway.

Overswinging is ruining my life
madcityscott replied to madcityscott's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
This may be the true root of my problem. I have a cupped left wrist during takeaway, which is another issue I've always struggled with. What's strange is that I can keep it straight without a club in my hands, but not with one. -
I think I've traced most of my swing woes to overswinging. Try as I may, I can't stop from swinging way past parallel, a la John Daly (without the spectacular drives). None of the tips I've found online are doing it for me. Have any other chronic overswingers managed to find a cure?

A friend of mine chucked a wedge into a tree and it got stuck. He had to stand on the shoulders of one of the other guys to get it out.

I have a friend who brought an actual air horn to a fraternity golf outing. It was barely amusing the first time he used it and rapidly went downhill from there. It wouldn't have been too bad except there were other paying customers on the course. (Our entire group ended up with something like 70 complaints.) I succeeded in convincing him not to bring it the next year.

(Whoops, wrong forum. That's how excited I am.)

I've been looking for a hybrid so I stopped into Play It Again Sports this afternoon. I came up empty, but happened to glance at the iron sets on the wall. There, before my eyes, was a set (4-SW) of Ping Raptures for $139.99! (These sell for $300 and up on Ebay.) At first I thought there must be something wrong with them but they are in decent shape, and I even called Ping to verify the serial numbers. I have wanted a set of these since I first hit them 4 or 5 years ago. I can only guess the store didn't know how much they were worth, and the manager said they came in only the day before. I can't wait to hit them. Damn rain.

172 yard par 3. Immediately to the left is the river. Lining the entire right side are trees, which have grown to where they overhang the (narrow) fairway. Either I'll try to hit a knock-down (and end up nailing a tree anyway), or fade it in (but not enough and land in the water). I've tripled that hole more times than I care to remember.

I think I've seen it done once in my life. It's kind of crazy to do it nowadays with everyone so hyper-sensitive; it would downright suck to be labeled a "sexual predator" and have to register with the authorities. Tangential story: I was playing in a fraternity golf tourney and one of the guys dared me to play the hole without my pants. So I stripped down, teed off, and turned around to find my pants were gone. I figured one of the guys had hidden them in the cart, so I finished out the hole pants-less. When I asked for them back at the next tee, my partners said they were behind a bush back at the previous tee. So I had to drive back up the hole (passing a marshal who just shook his head) to the tee box, where the next group was about to hit. After I retrieved my khakis, one of the guys asked, "How did you lose your PANTS?" To which I replied, "It was a hell of a drive!"

Best iPhone Golf GPS App?
madcityscott replied to Tenacious Deek's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Thanks for the heads-up on this app! I always go to the back side of my range, where the distances to the flags aren't marked. Now I know. I can imagine using it for other purposes, too. (For instance, in my work as a real estate appraiser.) -
I can't remember, I've had so many since then. Love California!

I just got an iPhone. Might have to give this a shot. Looks like the individual video frames are reasonably clear.

Who do you want for your "swing guru"?
madcityscott replied to Harmonious's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I picked Haney (just seem to connect with him and have had some success following his instruction) but I'd throw Jim McLean in there also. -
Increasing club-head speed - suggestions
madcityscott replied to squaddie's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I'm having a similar issue. I'm 46 yrs old, 155 lbs & 5'10", fairly athletic but my swing speed is around 85mph and driver distance is ~205. After playing around a bit on the launch monitor at Golf Galaxy I was able to get it up 92 for a swing or two by: 1) making sure my right arm was higher than my left on the downswing (tip from Jim McLean's 8-step swing), and 2) consciously transferring weight to the target (left) side of my feet on the downswing. If you have a Golf Galaxy or other store with a launch monitor that they'll let you swing away in for free, you can experiment. -
After reading the book I was anxious to try out CD, but it turns out I actually swing faster than the fastest tones. In fact, the slow tones (27/9) seem glacial to me.
