  1. hmm... well lets see, 20 years of playing golf. started with my dad's set, plastic cheap driver, 3 wood, and can't even remember the irons. first real set: Ram's.. got used for $150 at a course i used to play at. first new set: custom built golfsmith ping eye 2 knockoffs. some new graphite head / shaft driver combination .. next set that i played through most of high school and college. used 1984 titleist tour model blades, 2 - pw. custom fitted and reshafted with dynamic gold s 100's. had a variety of drivers through that time: taylor burner 7 degree, callaway big bertha steel, callaway great big bertha, founders club, titleist howitzer titanium. end of college golf experimented with some new irons: ping ISI, titleist DCI, and finally ended up with tommy armour 845's.. played those tommy armours for 10 years until i just got the set i have below.
  2. i wonder though how those tour players would fend on 6,000 yard municiple courses most people play around here with crowned spongy greens that run 6 - 7 on the stimpmeter. yeah the ratings on these courses are usually 70.5 / 120 or so ... but still I bet they wouldn't make half the putts they make on tour because the greens are so bad compared to tour courses.
  3. hehe, welcome to the wonderful world of 3 putts. after a 2 year layoff i am getting back in the game, played in a city tournament about a month ago after only playing 3 rounds before it. greens were tremendously fast. first round i shot an 84, hitting 13 greens, 3 putting 6 times, and missing 9 putts inside of 6 feet. the rest of the week was more of the same. I just couldn't seem to make anything and I had a ton of birdie chances inside of 15 feet. I am finally getting my feel back with the putter now ... it's all about confidence seeing the ball go in the hole and putting a confident stroke on it .. i've had a few 75's, and 76's since this month with a few birdies a round .. but still not going as low as i could. but again, this game is a game of "i should've!"
  4. whatever your comfortable with and can hit solid shots with .. I lay mine on the ground .. I feel if I pick it up I won't have a consisitent ball position.
  5. i was always generally around the sweet spot .. I had an old set of blade irons I played through college that are now rusted around the sweet spot, but I would also hit a few grooves low quite often on them ... I just got a new set of irons a few months ago, hit them quite well, and the centers are already wearing on them from regular use .. it's a neat thing to see .. my vokey sand and lob wedges are 2 years old and have a nice center discoloration to them from it as well.
  6. i chose the G10 a few months ago .. and man oh man am I hitting it well .. misshits go straight just a little shorter .. solid shots go long .. i average 280 off the tee with this with an average tempo .. if i go after it, 300 - 320. yum!
  7. just keep playing! good job!
  8. i've had 2 .. both long irons into par 5's .. i've holed out from the fairway on par 4's and par 5's a few times for eagles and birdies .. but never an ace.
  9. i looks to me like a knockoff of an original taylor made burner. It appears to have a closed face too it as well which will give you a straighter shot .. good luck with it! if you can hit it .. and hit it confidently .. I say keep it!
  10. played with a lot of good players growing up competitively ... most notables right now are I played one or two rounds in high school against Justin Hicks (the kid who was leading the US Open after the first round) ... a kid named Kyle Dobbs who has won on the Gateway tour.. I played against numerous times in high school .. he played for U of M in college. Right now a main golfing partner of mine is a .8 handicap .. he hits it about 20 - 30 yards farther than me off the tee and I average 280 - 300 .. he can have a few blowup holes though to ruin his round.. (same thing that I do, lol).
  11. I generally played my best golf when I was in college due to our practice regime. 2 1/2 hour practices every day ... 45 minutes of it was shots 100 yards and in. 45 minutes full swings. 1 hour chipping and putting. i miss that .. my long game is great now and my weakest part of my game is my putting.
  12. my best friend lived near a course and we would go hunting for golf balls at around age 12.. he had played a few times and he and i ended up playing together .. i would use my dad's old clubs. I got hooked that summer and tried out for the high school golf team and made it (they kept everybody). I was hooked from then on .. Freshman year: Avg: 60 Sophomore: Avg: 51 (lettered) Junior: Avg: 45 Senior: Avg: 41
  13. played once on a spring day .. walking up the fairway on a hole that had a pond 100 yards or so wide .. a canadian goose barrelled down at me .. flying 10 feet over the watter full throttle landing about 5 feet from me .. hissing at me and batting it's wings. slowly walked around it and didn't get attacked .. but had a club out and ready to whale if he did. figured he was protecting his babies. another time i was hitting a par 5 in two that was across about 200 yards of water .. the green was only 5 paces past the water so it was a tight shot .. i hit where i thought it was gonna go into the bank right before the green, hit the hill and popped up on the green and i saw something fall back into the water. got to the hole .. and a muskrat I believe was staring up at me .. 2 putt birdie thanks to him. lol.
  14. congrats. I have a 6 year old. I am also a single father with custody of her full time.. I have been for over 2 years now. Since she was born, I play about 10 times a year, if that. Some years I would only play 3 or 4, others a few more .. Finally nows the time where I can start bringing her to the course with me ... which I have a few times .. And my handicap has gone up about 3 points .. i was a 2 after leaving college .. now I'm a 6 or so (i havn't updated my index.)
  15. 7 of 9 greens for a 43 in a tournament a few weeks ago. 5 birdie putts inside 15 feet ... 2 of those inside of 5 feet. finished with 84 .. 41 putts .. 13 greens. 2 balls OB. first tourney in 2 years i played in .. my putting still hasn't gotten much better but now i'm down around 33 - 35 putts per round, lol.
  16. off the tee .. 260 - 270. tailwind farther .. into .. maybe 250. off the deck .. 240 - 250 with my 3 wood. i've been watching streaming video of the PGA .. they're following Padraig, Angel Cabrera, and Trevor Immelman .. on the 2nd hole, 535 yd par 5 .. cabrera had 147 yards left to the green .. flew it 300+ they said and had another 80 yards of roll. the other 2 players were back 100 yards behind him .. lol.
  17. yeah I don't know what it is with Michigan .. we have had a relatively cool summer .. nothing over 90 for more than a day or two .. today it was upper 70's low 80's .. had rain last night .. and we've had good rain at least once a week come through. the tee's were still fine .. a lot of fairways didn't have any roll today .. i was flying 270 yard tee shots and could see my ball mark in the fairway .. so the courses aren't really succeptable to dryout right now .. dunno .. I need to go back to my homecourse, Dunham Hills .. they always have great greens..
  18. last 3 courses I played at the greens have been terrible .. running between 7 and 8 on the stimpmeter probably .. very shaggy ... I don't understand it .. it's been a great summer here in Michigan so far and there's no reason they can't cut the greens a little better .. I played Shepherds Hollow today .. it's the #2 rated public course in michigan .. shot 80 .. had 4 birdie puts inside of 10 feet and didn't make a single one due to the roll of the greens .. I did birdie #10, a 470 yard par 4 .. and #15 .. a 460 yard par 4 .. one was a chip in and one was a 30 foot putt .. lol .. but it just irks me that the greens on these $75 courses are in such bad shape!
  19. you should probably be able to get one relatively close .. try the big boy just south of maple on telegraph (east side) .. they had parking back there for $15 .. it was within a block of the course .. you'll see signs all over the place in the subdivisions just south of the course too ..
  20. cool .. i work 2 miles south of the course .. they use my office building's parking for 3 or 4 of the lots and shuttle the players there. i was thinking of going saturday but tickets are $125!
  21. this is one of the best tracks ... I'll bet it'll be another even par victory .. I don't think anybody is going to go low all week.
  22. i'm 115 - 120 .. bought the R7 superquad 9.5 stiff .. shaft was way too flimsy and went way too high. Over my career I've always played 7 - 8 degree drivers. took it back . .superquad's don't come in 8.5 .. I got a Ping G10 7.5 .. shaft was still too flimsy .. so reshafted it with a UST V2 X stiff 2.2 torque .. i hit this thing a ton now and very straight .. the shaft makes all the difference.
  23. green was soft and tilted back to front? .. that's gonna do that on a full lob wedge, it's what it was designed to do. I rarely hit a full lob .. chip a sand wedge from 80 yards .. 70 yards is a punch lob .. I also play a prov1x now for just that reason .. V1's had too much spin .. V1X's generally stop on a dime, if the green is tilted back to front .. i can get about 10' of spin back with a 7 iron.
  24. I drive right by Oakland Hills every day on the way to work .. been doing so for 4 or 5 years .. I've played the course a few times and it's always fun. Yesterday traffic was quite heavy, and there's actually 2 PGA lots right behind my office building where they shuttle spectators to the course about 2 miles away. Today already driving in traffic sucked .. this is going to stink the next week trying to get in and out of work! I was thinking of going on Saturday .. tickets for saturday's round were $125!!!! dang .. I'd rather play golf than pay that much to be a spectator .. I've been to the Buick Open quite a few times .. been to the Senior PGA at TPC Dearborn as well .. It wasn't this bad during the Ryder Cup in 2004 I can tell ya that!
  25. I've had these two wedges for about 2 years now and about 20 - 30 rounds on them .. I've realized I need them reshafted I think ... they have the true temper "Wedge" shaft in them .. which I think is too flimsy .. I hit these quite high .. and my misses are right .. usually solid shots yet 10 - 20 feet right of the pin. I have lengthened them an inch when I regripped them by adding a plug .. but I want to buy new shafts .. just some Dynamic Gold S100's I think is what I need .. Do tour players use the standard "Wedge" shaft in theirs? .. my swing speed is 115 - 120 on a driver .. and I use stiff in my irons ..
