I am excited to see this thread. I will be moving from the North East to Denver sometime this summer (following my significant other). I am only a 1/week golfer (about 30-35 rounds/year) and I try to play a variety of courses. I will keep watching this thread for advice but hope to see some general advice about Colorado. And I will be waiting to hear about the advantages to the Colorado Avid Golfers Passport program!

Drive to range but take the bucket and fire those old balls into "the local greenbelt." I know my range could use a few balls from this decade and I would be doing them a favor

No one is debating what the rules of golf state. Most serious golfers (I suggest a definition here as people who play tournaments, practice as often as play a round, attempt to understand the golf swing) play by all of the rules of golf. I think golf should still be enjoyed. I really do not care what my partners do as long as they enjoy this great game. I play by all of the rules and that brings me enjoyment. And I have no problem with my father dropping when he is out of bounds or taking the incorrect drop from a yellow staked hazard. He enjoys his saturday round as much as I do. When I was a kid I loved basketball. We played Horse, 21, follow the leader, 3 on 3, 1 on 1, etc. I played basketball everyday and I really loved the game, but we were not following the rules of basketball. Just my internet 2 cents (no real space value)

Last weekend I hit three provisionals (I did end up using one). By the third one my weekend group growned and rxd that I just drop if I lost it. They also get mad that I don't take the three foot gimmie! But I enjoy playing the right way and don't worry when they take a mulligan b/c the cart girl drove by during the swing :) To the OP I say try and play by the rules. Hitting the next shot after a horrible one is a mini lesson in itself. And have fun!

I used golf.com's handicap software for the last two years. I was really pleased last year but lately the handicap section of golf.com has been down. Its really frustrating as I have a number of rounds to enter. Next year I am joining a local course and purchasing Scorecard for stats. Its just too frustrating to watch the website go down for a week at a time. Sorry for the rant.

This forum does make me think I need help with my driver distance. I really only hit it about 250. I do have an occasional drive of 270-280 but it is rare. My distance is ok/average. I hit an 8 iron 150-160. A 5 iron 185-195. But I do not hit my driver as far as the members on this forum :(

Last summer I shot 34 (-2) with a birdie on 9 after a rough three putt on 8. Standing on 10 (par 5) I decided to play it safe to keep the score low - and proceeded to card a 7. I stumbled in with an ugly 44 34-44 I have had a few rounds where I bettered the front nine by 10 strokes. Unfortunately the front was always over 50

I live in Center City but its nice to see some locals! I drive to NJ every weekend but I grew up there and most of my regular group lives there as well. If you find a great (and cheap ) course out that way make sure and share in the thread!

For all of the innate human error, i think the system is remarkably flexible. It is not only that golfers do not post scores, but they often post incorrect scores based upon errors made of pure ignorance. My sat group consists for three guys with even higher HC then I (16-23) where two of the members are always surprised about rulings. But they always ask and do want to follow the rules of golf. After a rough 18 holes today I drove to my home course in hopes of a practicing a few problem areas. I prefer to do this on the course (especially at the cost of only $20 to walk after 4 pm) and hit various bunker shots, chips etc. I felt like I had to "announce" it was practice or I know I would have been asked many times if I posted that round ...

Another poor round with a score of 89. I putted well but only hit three fairways and two greens. I need to figure something out. My HC went up a full 0.8 strokes last update

Like everything in life, there is a very important balance. I never think about my stats during a round - but I do like to look at my over all stats as well as what the difference was between a good round and a bad round. For the last 30 rounds my "important stats" are: Fairways: 33.6 GIR: 32.6 Putts: 1.91 What really is interesting is my rounds where the score is 90. I notice it is all related to the tee. I have rounds where I hit 0 Fairways and my misses are tops, pulls, slices .... My good rounds I hit fairways or just miss and hit rough. I hit more GIR and my putts are lower because of a shorter first putt. I know this is nothing new but it highlights what I need to work on.

I shot an 84 today. Hit my the ball really flush and I have been working on my take away and flattening my swing the last few weeks. I was terrible around the greens and I finished triple - double - double. Ouch Total 84 (38-46) Fairways: 6 GIR: 11 Putts: 37
-
Shot 90. With 45-45. Really disappointing as I had had a terrible triple on number 9. I had a really up and down back nine with 5 pars (not bad for me) plus 3 doubles and one triple :( This year has started off really difficult. I hope to turn it around but I haven't made it to the range very often (my boss and I disagree about my work schedule ). My current HC is 12.8 but my trend is almost a full shot higher

Interesting if that study is true. I usually decide which club is the better choice based on lie and surrounding hazards. If the lie is good and I can swing my 3-wood/rescue with little penalty (minimal hazards) then i get as close as possible. A so/so lie then I may hit 6 or 7 iron and leave a full PW or wedge into the par 5.

Congrats! Hopefully this starts a great season for you! It really is a mental game. Last year I had my first under par nine with a 34 (-2) on the front nine including a birdie on 9 after a 3 putt for bogey on 8. Then I fell apart and shot 44 (+8) coming home :( If you figure out how to keep the mental edge I will buy your book!

This is really an amazing app and made the purchase of my ipod touch worth it all on its own. I watched the par 3 tourney and AMEN corner at work (they block most sites from the work computers) in between patients and during one staff meeting. The best thing about the app is the extra coverage. I have a slingbox for watching on my phone (palm not iphone) but the pre-TV coverage was great!
-
I agree that the limited coverage is frustrating. I second the recommendation to watch online or the iphone app (which I used on my ipod touch not iphone). It is great to watch some of the Masters while at work. Lets hope my patients think I am looking up meds ;)

One thing I love about the game of golf is the personal integrity. There comes a moment in every golfers life where no one would know if a rule was broken. The difference between a golfer and a hacker (as I see it and I know its been discussed here before) is the one who follows the rules of the game regardless of handicap. I wouldn't say a thing unless he didn't actually know the rule that he breached.

I think about it at least once a year. Last year I was really excited about a round. Perfect course, perfect weather and the course was in perfect condition. It was one of those days where you break out the new shirt and box of new golf balls -- and I shot 101 The next week I went out with the urging of my dad. With very few expectations I shot a 78 including a -2 first nine of 34. The lure of the next shot, the next round keeps us all going. And this is fun after all :)
-
I am a 12.8 (silly to state as it is posted right
-
For 2008 my average was 34.25. I agree with others that it is not the best stat even though I hope to drop mine to at least 32 this year. Just as an example my two lowest putts-per-round were 27 and 29. For the round I had 27 putts - I hit 3 GIR and shot 90. For the 29 putts I hit 9 GIR and shot 77. I would take the second round every time.

How do you know how low you can go? I really never focus much on my handicap but maybe because it is not that impressive. I know I want to get better. I typically play once a week from April to October with no practice in between rounds. This year I hope to play six times a month. My typical Sat round with my father and two Sunday rounds that will be match play with some local friends. The other two Sundays a month I plan on working on my short game and what ever swing I am struggling with. I hope that I get better, I win more money on Sundays and that my handicap does go down!

My family just decided to plan a similar trip. There are more of us and I am sure wives and SO will be coming as well. Report back if you find some good information. To be honest I have not started my own research yet. And my game needs some work this year but what's new

Its worse when it ruins a round! Flash back two months: I was standing on 10 (par 5) after finishing the front at -2 (34). I thought I would play the par 5 smart and keep the good round rolling. I hit 3 wood down right side of fairway (1). Then a nice 6 iron to the middle of the of fairway about 105 out (2). Perfect gap wedge - I thought. I walk up and my ball laid in a horrible divot. I swear someone was hitting with a shovel. I didn't know what to do and decided to hit a punch PW - which I pulled left (3). The ball hit the back/left of the green and kicked about 15 yards deep into the woods. I bumped it into hill of the green but it rolled through the green (4). I hit a long chip leaving me 15-20 feet (5). I lagged a bogey put to about 5 feet (6). I pushed the five footer (7) and tapped in (8). I hate this game
