Phil Mikkelson and Tiger Woods should have became the Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer of the current generation. Phil, so far has just never lived up to his end of the bargain. But, he is playing really well and this might be the time for him to become the other man to Tiger. He needs to get it done because some historic golf battles could come between him and Tiger. Historical battles. One more thing, somebody should take Phil, Tiger, Jack and Arnold and put them together in a two man best ball, for prime time TV, and have them talk about golf and golf history, during the match. It would be something for the ages. Who, wouldn't want to hear those conversations. And, for the history of the game, all four should agree to do it. It is something that would have to happen soon, well Palmer and Nicklaus are still in good health.

What's your latest swing thought?
photoballmarker replied to kfowler's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I can't resist: 1. Hope I Hit It... 2. Hope I Find It... It works well, most of the time I Hit It, and most of the time I Find It. Seriously, this is what I try to do: 1. Check to be sure I am setup well... 2. The ball is going to land right there... -
The Haney Project: Can Haney Fix Barkley’s Swing?
photoballmarker replied to Uber$winG's topic in Golf Talk
Haney is a professional teacher of golf and Barkley was once a great athlete. Seems like it should be a pretty easy thing to do. -
Tiger Woods is back and the PGA Tour and golf needed him back. Two questions... 1. Will Tiger win his first match back and why? 2. Will he walk away with the Accenture Match Play Championship, if not, who will beat him and when? Post your predictions here and we'll see what happens. I'll go first, Tiger will win his first two matches and get beat in the Sweet 16 round. Bad news for the weekend ratings.

All these comments are very silly. None of them make any sense. Play any ball you want for practice and learn about all of them. When it comes to the tournament play the one best suited for the conditions, how you are playing, and what looks nice to you at that time. The idea your short game will suffer is really silly. Just chip and putt a few shag bags full of balls and you will have your feel. As per how far the ball will carry, we have laser's and you can dial in your distances the day before you play. Also, the course should be considered, especially the greens. Pros play one ball by contract, not be choice. You can play mulitple balls in practice all you want. That is the only way your going to ever find a better ball, by trying a new one. Play a hard two piece ball on hard greens in the dead of summer and I bet you learn a lot of creative shots around the green. Golf is a game of variables and adapting to changing elements. You want to practice by changing elements not keeping them the same.

In Oregon we have the very long summer days. My favorite time to play is in those evening summers. It is terrific.

Sunflower Seed Shells and every kind of Butt on the green.

I do not think putts per round is a stat worth tracking. I break my round up into long shots/pitches and chips/putts. My reasoning is a chip and putt are the same thing. I have a grey area between pitches and chips where one time I will count it as a short shot and another a long shot. Since, I am always trying to break 80 as a goal, I try to have 20 long shots and 20 short shots per nine. I tend to be around 24 short shots per nine and thus my 14 handicap. Keep track of short shots and long shots, and don't worry about putts, fairways hit, or any of that. You will score better.

I start with my wedges and move up one club at a time. I move up after hitting three decent shots in a row (I have low standards for decent). Sometimes I even get to my driver before I run out of balls. After the driver, I rotate between a heavy headed driver and my regular driver. End with some mid-irons. I like this because it makes me hit good shots with my irons before I get to smash my driver. Usually, have two large buckets when I do this. If I am in a hurry I just go everyother iron, hybrid or wood.

How many times will Paula (the Pink Panther) win this year?
photoballmarker replied to PEZGolf's topic in Tour Talk
I'll go with two times. The LPGA talent is very spread out. It will be very tough to win multiple times by anybody except Ochoa. -
Whats your favorite putting tip?
photoballmarker replied to ScottyCameron's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Use one of our photo ball markers for good luck. I have not heard of a user missing a putt since they started using their photo ball markers. Of course, I haven't asked any of them if they have missed a putt. Here is a serious one, my son Kelly showed me this and it works great. On short putts, look at the back of the hole, as deep as you can into the cup. Focus on hitting that spot with the ball. You will find it is much easier to stroke the putt if you laim at the back and down at the hole. Not the front of the hole. Try it, you will like the result. -
metal spike golf shoe
photoballmarker replied to pshizz's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
This has been a nice thread. Here is my take on all of it. Metal Spikes are a thing of the past. It does not matter if they allow a player to play a little better. The issue is the damage they do to the greens, to the root system and creating spike marks. The sound of the spikes on the pavement will soon be forgotten just like the sound of the ball hitting a wooden head driver. Missed but forgotten. If your course allows metal spikes I would suggest you work toward having them banned on your course. Your handicap will go down a little if you can get them banned. A few more putts will fall around the hole. And, your greens will be in much better shape. As for sneaking them onto other courses, it does not matter if you get caught or not. Getting caught is not part of integrity. Integrity is doing the right thing when nobody is watching. The question you want to answer is, if nobody but me is on a course that did not allow metal spikes and I have them on my feet standing on the first tee. What do I do? Answer that question and you will learn a lot about your own integrity. -
metal spike golf shoe
photoballmarker replied to pshizz's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I remember what greens were like before courses went to banning metal spikes. It was a mess around the cups, especially in the afternoon. I will gladly sacrifice a little grip so my putts will role online and I don't have to fix other people's spike marks. Plus a challenge, chart your scores using metal and non-metal spikes. Won't even be 1/10th of a stroke difference a round. Additionally, your metal spikes will lead to more knee injuries, because your foot won't twist so your knee will. Finally, you don't want to wear metal spikes on any golf course that does not allow them. Your spike shows will look like tracks through snow, on the greens. -
Consistent 220yrds is better than a mix of 200 - 300 yrd drives
photoballmarker replied to jfrain2004's topic in Golf Talk
No substitute for distance. The longer the better. The long hitter can throttle back but us shorter hitters can only wish we could throttle up. How many handicap strokes would you part with to hit it 280 yards. I'd give up five and then start working to get them back. -
Jack vs. Tiger: Who's the Greatest Golfer?
photoballmarker replied to sungho_kr's topic in Tour Talk
Tiger Woods is the best golfer to ever play the game. When he is at his best he plays at a level not even Jack could play at it. What makes Tiger so special is how well he scores when he is not at his best. It is amazing how often he up and down when he is struggling. He also has a way of holding on until he can get to a stretch of holes that he can attack. That being said, Jack Nicklaus career records are still goals not yet achieved by Tiger. Until Woods matches or surpasses those marks, Nicklaus remains with the greatest career. What is special about Woods is we get to watch him chase those records for all these years. -
Sunflower Seed Shells on the Greens. It drives me totally nuts and if you find one on any green, you will find them on every green the rest of the way. They make cigar butts look innocent.

Putters: Blade or Mallet?
photoballmarker replied to ScottyCameron's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Mallet - The older I get the bigger and heavier it has to be. But, not necessary expensive, I found my current putter at a local sporting goods store, I think I paid $19.95 for it. Heavy as can be, with an insert. I have always thought the blade putters are better for longer putts. Thought about actually carring two putters, my old bulls eye putter and my current sledge hammer. Sort of hard to carry two putters along with my 5 woods, 4 hybrids, full set of irons, and 4 wedges. I guess I could take out my 2-iron, can't hit it anyway. -
I just started doing this over the summer and saw some nice improvement in my ball striking. It is an easier swing for me. My thought is to create V with the shaft and my arm early in my swing. Then turn back and turn down. It actually is easier for me to turn shoulders back and through. Sort of wrist early and then just swing.

I like Obama saying on Monday Night Football - an 8-team playoff. President Bush would probably agree. It would be the shining moment of the transition. A way to cross party lines and bring unity to our country, well at least the college football world. Bush should call for an 8 - team President's Football Challenge. He could choose his top 4 college football teams to play and Obama could invite his next 4 teams. Heck with the polls and computers, we'll let the president and next president decide the 8 teams to play for the United States Collegiate Championship. What football team would not play in that and the NCAA would have to go along. President Bush and President-Elect Obama should do it.

He was my choice. And, I agree, let's all hope he does well and see what he and we can accomplish. This can be a positive moment in time when we can come together and accomplish great things as a country. But, it will take all of us, respecting our differences but working toward our common goals. The fringes, on both sides will never be happy and never be satisfied, but the vast majority of us are not on the fringes, we have much more in common than we have apart. President Obama, can be a very good leader (some think great), all recognize he has the skills and potential to be a good leader. But, it is up to him to be the leader of all of us, and it is up to all and each of us to decide if we are willing to go along for the ride. And, it begins with Smallville's simple statement above. And, it begins with one of the great moments in United States history. Not a bad start...

Start with the 8 iron to 80 yards and the 9 iron 70 yards and go from there. Good luck and let me know how it works for you.

I have a short swing I use on shots from 80-30 yards. Bring it half way back and choked down to the bottom of the grip. Just a little wrist for feel and accelerate through the shot. Basically, a punch shot and choked down grip. Same swing regardless of distance and I use the following rules: 1. 7-iron from 90 yards. 2. 8-iron from 80 yards. 3. 9-iron from 70 yards. 4. pw from 60 yards. 5. gap wedge from 50 yards. 6. sw from 40 yards. 7. 60 degree wedge from 30 yards. Works great with my Pro V ball, OK when I am playing my harder golf balls. They just don't want to check up so much. This has worked great for me. I remember 8 iron - 80 yards and then 10 yards per club for shorter distances. I only need to practice one of the shots and I am working on all of them.

Great Job... I have had one in my life. Didn't get to see it and definitely not hear it go in the hole.
