Watching a reply of the 1991 Ryder Cup last night
uttexas replied to deronsizemore's topic in Golf Talk
It's weird editing. Irwin's tee shot the final day on 17 did end up long on the right (just reread the GD article on "The Rowdy Ryder Cup at Kiawah") That final match was thoroughly dissected in that article. The main controversy of the final match was Irwin's tee shot on 18--where the ball appeared to be going (sand dunes left of fairway) and where it ended up (just in the rough off the left fairway) To see Irwin's tee shot go to 2:48:05 on this video For another view of the 17th hole see 2:37:07 on this video -
Agree, normal teenage behavior. Try breaking the routine. Here's some options: Play some rounds at a par 3 course without a score card. Play from a more forward set of tees. Have him hit two shots off each tee box with two different balls (tell him it's to see which ball he plays with better, but because he is testing equipment, the round won't count, so no need to keep score) Find the easiest course around and play from the forward tees. GD and other magazines often suggest to mentally break the 18 holes down to six sets of three holes--so you are not crushed by a bad shot on an individual hole, but focus on the momentum to achieve a good three hole score.

Wrist Cock: Early, Late, or Proportional?
uttexas replied to GaryH's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Jack Nicklaus said to just let the wrist cock happen naturally--he cocked late at the end of the backswing. Mr. Nicklaus did a lot of things "naturally" that worked well for him that wouldn't work well for most. I'd say for most people, earlier wrist cock would be advantageous. As a golfer develops a better swing, delaying the left wrist cock and delaying the right wrist hinge could generate more power--float loading see this thread (includes video of delaying left wrist cock and delayed right wrist hinge) http://thesandtrap.com/t/61098/float-loading -
How would YOU play this common shot ??
uttexas replied to inthehole's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Short sided like you mentioned, I'd play this with my 60 degree, using the bounce--like a bunker shot. I try to slap or thump the bounce of the club under the ball. If there's lots of green to work with, I'd use my 56, striking down hands well ahead of ball at impact. Accelerating through the ball (striking the match as Gary Player likes to say) is key for both shots. -
The Medalist does have pinseeker. The primary differences between the Medalist and V2: V2 has 5X magnification with an adjustable diopter and uses a special CR-2 camera battery. Medalist has 4X magnification, is bigger, and uses a regular 9V battery. The Medalist is about $60 cheaper.

Agree and disagree: Recent history 1979 to current time (since it's been all of Europe in the competition) USA 7 wins Europe 8 wins One tie: wouldn't call that sucking, I'd say evenly matched. Agree: When teams are evenly matched, strategy and the leader are more important. Furyk was a risky pick imo. going into the match, I'd say it's best to show positive support for the leader and his/her strategy. The captain picks have been selected, so the focus should be on how to best utilize the team. The proof is in the pudding; we will find out if his selections and strategy were wise at the end of the event.

Really enjoyed the televised discussion, in particular the ever feisty Gary Player. All supreme competitors in their primes, even Mr. Nicklaus appears to have mellowed--but not Gary. I can see how Mr. Player's unrelenting competitiveness could be annoying, but I find it admirable and entertaining . I fully expected him to jump onto the table and do single arm push ups.

For around $150, the Bushnell Yardage Pro Sport is OK At around $200, you can get a decent golf rangefinder: take a look at the Bushnell Medalist and the Nikon Prostaff 550

The most controversial faces of golf: Spectators that yell "mashed potatoes" or "get in the hole" The R&A; for allowing the belly putter and the modern golf ball Spectators/media for taking pictures during a player's backswing Spectators talking on cell phones/not setting them to silent. Slow players Peter Kostis' title of swing expert

A suggestion I made on a previous similar thread: Real Reality Golf Channel Show Twelve female golfers with an official H.I. less than 20 Two teams of six. Team one: Volley ball players (played at least college level) Team two: Swimmers/Divers (participated, at least college level) Team one coached by Martin Hall. Team two coached by Michael Breed. The original teams of six reduce to two teams of two via Big Break type competitions. Final two teams of two face off in Ryder Cup format. 9 holes alternate shot 9 holes better ball (fourball is boring) 9 holes singles match.

Interesting. Karrie Webb 40 consecutive tournaments without a missed cut. Impressive considering her tenure. Most consecutive cuts made on the LPGA tour= 299 Jane Blalock

Any tips for the dreaded 30-50yd bunker shot?
uttexas replied to dash1988's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Both challenging shots for sure For the 30yd bunker shot, I'd use my 50 degree gap wedge, ball forward in stance, backward shaft lean, open club face, taking a thin layer of sand, accelerating through the shot. Basically a greenside bunker shot with the gap wedge. For the 50yd bunker shot, I'd use my 50 degree gap wedge, ball middle of stance, neutral shaft lean, accelerating through the sand. I typically start with my 8 iron trying to hit push draws toward the 150yd flag watching the ball flight making adjustments until I'm happy with distance and curve. Then 5iron to 200yd flag, then 3 wood, finishing with driver. However, this weekend my tee time was at 0650 and it was nearly pitch black and cloudy when I got to the driving range at 0620. I could barely see the ball on the ground and certainly not the ball flight. Got out the 8 iron and just focused on internal feelings like slow full hip turn, extending at P4. I could tell I was hitting it great, but had no visual of ball flight curve or distance. When I got to the driver, the sun was out, and I could see I was hitting nice, slight draws. Ended up scoring one of my best rounds. Watching the ball flight certainly gives you lots of good information, but I might try focusing more on just internal swing feelings during the early warm up, instead of trying to hit an ideal ball flight with the first driving range swings.

You're right, some pros really like Firestone Firestone satellite picture emphasizes the repetitive long, narrow tree ligned design
-
Ten years ago, I would have listed the TPC Four Seasons in Dallas, but the D.A. Weibring redesign/update definitely improved the course Watching the Wyndham last night just about put me to sleep. Beautifully manicured course, nice clubhouse, etc, but looks bland on TV. Maybe the course is better in person, but on TV other than the 15th hole providing some drama and some tricky long putts on the large undulating greens....meh Firestone Country Club (South Course). Long, narrow, tree-lined hole followed by long, narrow, tree-lined hole.

Coming to a TV near you... Tiger vs. Rory on October 29th, 2012
uttexas replied to Beachcomber's topic in Tour Talk
$$$. Should be better TV than the Monday Night golf Woods/Annika vs Duval/Webb. Well, Rory won the US Open wearing blue. jk The individual on the winning Ryder cup team gets too choose outfits. -

Great golfer, vey watchable, good personality. I'd say he's a career two major/20 PGA wins talent. Davis Love III type career with one more major.

Yes, Cypress and Pine Valley don't currently need the business. However, there's the issue of "if there aren't any pictures, it didn't happen." Because people don't see the best golfers playing these courses on television, some are starting to wonder if these two courses truly are the best in America. Institutions flush with cash feel more pressure when their reputation is in question. The courses I listed are in the Boonies, but "it you build it, they will come" Some of the British Open rota courses are in difficult to get to locations with a lack of big infrastructure, but they are never short of patrons.
-
Agree. Way too close the Open. I'm sure people smarter than I have studied the scheduling. My guess is that they are avoiding college football and NFL seasons.
-
I hear what you are saying, sure not all majors are equal. In tennis, no one thinks the Australian Open comes close to the importance of the other three. The cat is out of the bag on the four majors, and it'll be a battle to not recognize a fifth.
-
Agree, AAC was a poor choice. Here's some I think would continue the momentum of identifying the PGA as the major with a non traditional US Open course with probability of wind/elements. Considering that the PGA Championship is in August, I favored more northern venues and moderate climates. Cypress Point--this is the Holy Grail, the golden goose. There's obvious sensitive political issues regarding this, but if those are settled, having a PGA Championship here would be amazing. Pine Valley--might not be enough room to sell tens of thousands of patron tickets, but who cares, take a bite on ticket sales. There's a huge demand to see pros playing the updated course on TV Pacific Dunes, Bandon Dunes, Old MacDonald and Sand Hills--difficult to get there, and not many hotels, but golf fans are a resourceful bunch. plenty of room for spectators. The inconvenient locations might keep away the "mashed potatoes" Arcadia Bluffs, The GC at Black Rock, Ballyneal

Until recently, the PGA Championship struggled with a separating identity relative to the other majors--it had the feeling of a lesser US Open or a US Open Lite. The PGA would often be held at classic US Open venues, with an easier set up. This is reflected by the lower winning scores at the same course. 1997 PGA Davis Love -11 at Winged Foot vs 2006 Winged Foot US Open Ogilvy +5 1994 PGA Nick Price -11 at Southern Hills vs 2001 Goosen Southern Hills US Open -4 Now that the PGA Championship is trending toward non traditional US Open venues (Whistling Straits, Kiawah) with more wind/elements, the PGA is heading in the right direction.
