  1. After trying several different loft/lie combinations, I have settled upon 56-12, and 60-12, as I use both out of the sand, and for chipping, depending on the length of the shot. The higher bounce gives me more confidence on full shots from the fairway, that I am not going to dig a trench under the ball.
  2. If you shoot 5 - 8 shots under your index in a tournament next week, it won't matter what you do this week, you'll most likely be accused of sandbagging anyway. 8 shots under your index is either the round of your life, and not easily repeated, or an indication your handicap is not very accurate.
  3. I'll give up my laser when you switch back to hickory shafts, if you are such a fan of the game "as it was meant to be played". And I'm not under 30, I'm 53.
  4. It's hard to tell from the pictures, but the 6 iron appears newer than the rest of the set.
  5. If you are hooking everything, it is most likely not the clubs, but an over the top swing, or too much in to out, with too hard a release through the ball.
  6. Double down on your bets on the next round.
  7. Don't try to recover from a bad shot with a "hero" shot, just take your medicine and move on to the next shot. I had a problem with this for quite a while, trying to get a shot back after a bogey, only to make another bogey, or worse, from trying to hit the perfect shot. Keep things in perspective, everyone hits some bad shots, you need to let them go after you hit them, and focus on your next shot. Once I learned how to let go on the course, I've shot some of my best scores after an early bogey or two, as the pressure to maintain perfection is gone, and I can just play my normal game.
  8. Without numbers from a launch monitor, specifically launch angle and swing speed, it is impossible to tell if you are hitting it "too high". You may be hitting your 3 and 7 wood too low, but who knows. Before making any radical changes, try moving the ball 1 inch back in your stance, and see if you get a lower flight, and not lose distance.
  9. I agree with most of the prior posts, regarding getting fit, but at 50 years old, you have to take into account any earlier injuries or problems when it comes to choosing between steel and graphite shafts. If you have any history of broken bones, arthritis, joint issues, or back trouble, give graphite a good look. I have switched back and forth several times in the last few years, trying to find a steel shaft that would not cause hand and arm pain after several rounds, and have finally settled on a set of graphite shafts that perform well and allow me to play pain free. Sorry for the long post, but many of the younger guys here will steer you to steel, as thay have not been through some of the stuff us 50 somethings have. Good luck in your search for the right clubs for you..
  10. Not to piss in your wheaties, but there is no way you can pursue medicine, and a career in pro golf at the same time, thay are both just too all consuming. Please try to be an excellent doctor, and average golfer, rather than the reverse.
  11. Who cares??
  12. I would recommend looking at clubs like Callaway X20, X22, Ping G5 & G10, Titleist AP1's, TaylorMade R7's, or Cobra FP's, which all offer playability and a good degree of forgiveness. If you can't break 100, you really should not be trying to "work the ball", just hit it straight.
  13. plark, congrats on doing whats right enis750, you are a thief
  14. Almost a full club longer
  15. If you compare 6 iron to 6 iron, they are longer. If you compare clubs by their specifications, loft and length, they are similar.
  16. They are a great set for a higher hcp. player. You still need to make a good swing to get a good result, but your less than good swings will still go in the general direction you want. It is not as if these clubs jump out of the bag, and hit the ball by themseves, as some people might try to tell you. Super game improvement clubs are perfect for the player who does not have time to always go to the range, or only plays once or twice a month. Good luck with your new clubs, and enjoy them.
  17. Thats true, I guess thats why there's a majority at 16+.
  18. I don't think you can generalize it to one thing, but I will say that there are two things I see that make a big difference: 1. Hitting fairways, you don't need to try to hit it 300 yards as this will cause you to find trees, fairway bukers, and out of bounds, eliminating any chance of a green in regulation. 2. Go for the center of the green, pin hunting for a higher hcp. player will result in bunkers, short sided chips, and fewer chances for a routine 2 putt par. Also take enough club to get there with a comfortable swing, don't be coming out of your shoes on an iron swing to try to hit it as far as someone else might. I guess both of these points boil down to playing within yourself
  19. Breaking clubs over your knee? Punching bags? Sounds like a self control issue causing those late round chokes.
  20. Got to love this forum, the majority of the people are 16+ hcp., but most of them hit 300 yard drives. Guess ya'll need some work on your short games.
  21. As someone who does hit it 240- 250, 380 minus 250 tee shot leaves me 130, which is a 9 iron. I would take that off the fairway any day against a shot out of the rough. I can control the spin, and have no worries about catching a flyer.
  22. +1 on the Cobra, easiest to hit off the turf 3 wood i have used.
  23. Yes, I have played my best golf when I felt relaxed on the course. Being relaxed gives me the confidence to make a good swing off the first tee, and sets the tone for the round, feeling that I can handle any shot. I guess I have to tie confidence and relaxed together, as one accentuates the other. That would be my "zone", so to speak, not overanalyzing, overthinking, or over-reacting if a shot goes a little astray.
  24. +1 on the Snake Eyes wedges, I would never have believed this until I tried a friends wedge. I game 2 of them now, a 56 & a 60 and they replaced a 58* Vokey in my bag.
