Golf Shoe Sizes: Better to be TIGHT, or LOOSE?
pherg replied to CG031's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Another option might be a 10.0 medium. Golf shoes do stretch with time but if you're walking a lot you may never get to this stage if they're too uncomfortable. A mate of mine bought a pair of callaways once and wore them for 3 months and he was hobbling around like someone with two wooden legs the whole time. They never got any looser or more comfortable. It didn't help that they looked like women's bowling shoes either. If you're someone who uses carts you might get away with the tighter ones. Otherwise I'd suggest going with thicker socks and wider shoe or a different brand. -
I've just replaced my TM V-Steel 15˚ with the Mizuno MX-700 15˚. It sends the ball high and long.

Really cool story. Apparently a lot of Japanese golfers are like that, only ever play at the range because it's too hard and expensive to get on one of the courses there. Imagine if you played your first round ever at St. Andrews and you shot 4 over. I'd be quite happy to never play another round again.

They all looked really nice but I voted Countryside. According to the Countryside website: 1. Countryside Golf Course is known for the best greens in the Des Moines and surrounding area. Good greens win every time for me. Nothing worse than a course with good fairways and shoddy greens. 2. The front 9 holes have water hazards on 6 of those holes. Water always makes for pretty golf holes and a good challenge. 3. Women like our golf course because you can walk the course. I'm not sure what walking has to do with women liking a golf course (Do women not like driving carts? Or do they just really like walking), but anyway there may be lots of women there and women are nice.

How many see the club make contact with the ball.

Yeah I think it was. Nice work, thanks. I've been struggling to work out where it came from. Been a bit quiet at work and have read a lot of stuff recently including that article. -
Don't think about it. Don't read about it. Don't worry about it. Don't even pick up a club for a week. Worked for me recently. I was in a big slump. The worse I got the more I found I was thinking about it. The more I thought about it, the more reading I did and the more thoughts I had going through my head. Last week I stopped worrying about golf for a week. I went to the gym when I would've gone to the range. (I hadn't been to the gym for a while and notice that when I don't go I feel like I swing harder because I don't feel as strong - this creates a whole world of bad habits). When I pulled the clubs out yesterday I went back to basics. Posture. Setup. Alignment. I hit the ball really well and shot my handicap for the first time in 7 weeks.

Anybody have any tips/drills to help release the club?
pherg replied to svchiefs19's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I've really been struggling with releasing the club as a result I was leaving the face open and everything was going right. I had some lessons and tried different things but my slice wouldn't go away. Then the other morning I had the light-bulb going off kind of moment. I'd fallen into the habit of having my arms more in a U shape at address rather than a V (Elbows a little bent), as a result I couldn't rotate my right arm across. Played yesterday focusing on starting with and maintaining the V and hit it beautifully. From this position the club/arms naturally release. Maybe this'll help. -

Haha, the best one of those I heard was asking people if they breathe in or out when they swing. -
It might sound dumb but I was reading an article that was talking about seeing the club make contact with the ball. I started thinking about it and realised I don't think I do this. I think my head or my eyes have already moved to see where the ball will go. Or perhaps I'm swinging too hard to control that moment. Should you be able to see the contact? Could this be a key to consistent, smooth tempo - only going as fast as allows you to see the moment?

When I got my Tour Burner last year I had exactly the same experience. I was snapping so-called "unbreakable" tees consistently. In the end I just went with a big bag of 3.5-inch wooden tees, I stick 3 or 4 in my pocket at the start of the round and usually finish with one or two that have survived.

If I'm not mistaken, the blue is just a sticker. You could do what this guy did and take them off, I'm sure they're just there for cosmetics.

The simplest way is to pick a spot about a foot in front of the ball and align your clubface to it. If you're still not going where you're aiming it's time to hit the range and lay some clubs on the ground to see whether your feet are aligned properly.

Favorite Driver and Fairway Woods
pherg replied to bradabco's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
They're yours for $1. If you don't like them, you can always sell them and get something you like. Either way, you win. -
In a round that included one of the biggest slices I've ever hit, a shanked 6 iron and a topped 5 iron, I also managed two of the sweetest shots I've ever played. Shot one. Uphill green, big bunker in the front, 90 metres to the flag. I hit my 50˚ wedge and it went like a tracer bullet right at the flag, it pitched on a slight downslope and stopped about 5 feet later, 6 inches from the hole. Tap in bird #1. (I should mention I was lucky to be on the fairway at all, miss-hit my driver and it went really low before bouncing over the fairway bunker! You take your luck when you get it I guess.) Shot 2: Par 5. Hit my second which ended up just in the right hand rough. 120m from the hole, even bigger bunker in front of the green and only a couple of metres to stop it. Hit it so sweet and it flew high and straight at the flag. It must have hit the hole because the pitch mark was 2 feet from the hole in a direct line from where I hit it and the ball was sitting 4 inches from the hole on the right hand side. Tap in bird #2. After both birds I hit dreadful, weak fades to short Par 3s. Consistency!! Where are you??

A mate of mine has a set of Titleist 695cb's that he's getting rid of and offered them to me - I'm keen because I love the idea of playing with forged irons for the first time. The issue is the shafts are 0.75 inch longer and the lie has been adjusted 2˚upright compared to standard - he's about 6'4 in height and I'm about 6'1. My question is will the change in length and lie from my standard Tour Burners be an issue? Lengthwise I can always grip down a little but does 2˚Upright really make that much of a difference and if needs-be, can a club-fitter bend them back to standard? I think they were originally altered at Titleist in the States but any adjustments would have to be done here in Melbourne. And what, if any, difficulties would I encounter if I had the lengths taken back to standard? I've only ever hit them once and nailed it but I'll be heading down to the range tonight to have a better go. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

[QUOTE=flopdarock;293797]you're a single digit? releasing the club from lag to impact to full release is usually pretty basic for a single digit guy... most single digits i know are working on shaping shots... Ease up Tiger. The reason I ended up here was because I'd basically improved my handicap as much as i could with the swing I had and wanted to develop a more technically correct one. I knew how to swing and how to cut and draw, I just wanted to do it more consistently and ended up getting lost in the pieces of the swing and was struggling to put them back together in the right order. The issue I had was that all the videos and drills such as the pump drill, etc. only emphasize the bit up until 90˚not how you square the clubface. The tip I had from Ben with the impact bag and a couple of the other guys have been really handy - my contact has already gone from fairly consistent to really consistent in just a couple of days and I've added 5 - 10 yards with every club. So I'd say the effort was worth it.

I think I'm understanding the downswing bits. I can bump my hips and drop my arms, while keeping the L- shape in my hands and arms, into a 90˚ position between the shaft and the ground. But I can't work out how I get from that position over my right thigh area into a forward pressing impact position. Am I supposed to be turning my body or rolling my arms? pushing in with my right leg? I think I'm way over-complicating this. Any suggestions/videos?

I'm with you, for some reason I could never hit my R5. It didn't seem to have a middle. Even when I put one out there it felt as if I'd miss hit it. Much happier with my Tour Burner.

I think you might be better off with more than one pair if you're playing that often. All leather shoes should only be worn one day on - one day off, to give them time to breathe. Even though I usually only play once or twice a week, I still have have a pair of white FJ eComforts and a black pair of black eComforts which I alternate each week. Maybe you'd be better off with two solid pairs of shoes instead of one awesome pair that will get worn out very quickly. Good luck with your choice, in my opinion you can't go wrong with any Footjoys.

Shindig wrote (I can't work out how to get the little blue box around it): I think it's fine unless Phil refers to the FT-9 as the Diablo. If it just has the headcover, I don't see the big deal. If someone buys a club based on what club they think Phil is playing, I'm not about to feel sorry for them. Heck, if you're buying based on what your favorite professional is paid to use , I have to wonder. I mean generic "you" here; I don't think you, kafka01, is buying based on Phil. Pherg wrote: I think the point here is the only reason these players are paid to put a logo on their shirt, hat, jocks and whatever is to influence regular golfers to use that brand of clubs. I'd imagine a great number of purchases are made solely based on the fact that someone's favourite player has that (or supposedly has that) club in their bag. Therefore I don't think it's unreasonable that the player should be playing the club that the headcover indicates. Not everyone makes an informed decision and that's what marketing departments rely on when handing over buckets of cash to sports men and women. I think the average start-up player that got into the game because of Tiger Woods would assume Tiger played everything Nike, including putter, after all it's a fair assumption for a newbie especially if it has a Nike cover on it. If you see a race car that says "Ford" you don't expect it to have a Honda engine. So I guess my point is, if it's a Scotty putter, put it in a Scotty cover or at least a blank one. If it's an Adams hybrid it should have an Adams cover, anything else is false advertising. I should know, I work in advertising.

Whatever you think about whether Phil would deserve it or not, if he was to take the number 1 position that's all the history books would show, there wouldn't be an asterisk signifying that he did it when Tiger was sitting on the couch at home playing Playstation. You can only beat the guys that are on the course and if that's what Phil has done, good luck to him. If Phil was #1 you could be darn sure Tiger would be going all-out to get it back. Nothing like a bit of motivation to blow away the cobwebs. At the end of the day, I think it would be good for golf.

Which Vokey finish do you prefer and why?
pherg replied to TMO's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I went chrome simply to keep the look consistent with my other clubs. -
I've got one and I'm really happy with it. I upgraded from an R5 Dual N about 8 months ago and find this much nicer / easier to hit consistently. It all comes down to taste really, have a hit and if if suits you, get it. At that price I think it's an awesome deal. 8 months and it's less than half the original price, crikey. They don't hold much value do they. I might wait next time.

Whats the best golf glove out there?
pherg replied to svchiefs19's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Callaway Tour Series with X-Spann, whatever that may be. Chose this one because when I tried on just about every other glove in the shop, these one fit me like a glove, funnily enough. Perfect fit. Really soft leather yet still durable. I've noticed the plastic Callaway logo and Chevron have started to come off the velcro bit during the first wear with the last two gloves I've had - doesn't bother me though. I just love going into the Pro-shop and grabbing one off the shelf knowing it'll fit great. It's the only Callaway product I use. -
Bettinardi C series or Scotty Studio Select

The softness of my Odyssey XG White Hot #1 insert was the exact same reason I went to a putter without an insert. I think it was probably because the balls are getting softer, I didn't have any feel. I still have one of the early Odyssey White Hot 2-Ball blades with the original flat-style insert, not the criss-cross pattern, and that feels OK still. Nowhere near as soft.
